Guyana's oil exports rose 54% last year to some 582,000 barrels per day (bpd), fueled by European refiners' demand for easy-to-process sweet crudes to replace some Middle Eastern grades, according to traders and shipping data from financial firm LSEG.Since it started exporting oil in early 2020, the burgeoning oil nation has emerged as the fifth largest Latin American crude exporter after Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia.But unlike Latin America's usual offer of heavy sour oil, Guyana's lighter and sweeter crude grades have carved out a rising share in Europe, where most refineries are not as complex as the majority of Latin American and U.S. Gulf Coast plants that turn heavy grades into motor fuels."Europe is the ideal market for Guyana's crudes," said a trader of Latin American grades, who was not authorized to speak to media.Guyana's three crude grades - Liza, Unity Gold and Payara Gold - have been tested and adopted faster in Europe than in any other region due to proximity, quality and easy access to sellers, he added.In 2024, 66% of Guyana's crude exports or some 388,000 bpd went to Europe, compared with 62% the previous year, the shipping data showed.Guyana's oil began gaining favor in Europe in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which pushed many refiners to avoid sanctioned Russian crude and seek alternative supplies.Last year, attacks in the Red Sea affected oil flows from the Middle East, giving crudes from Guyana and Brazil better chances of finding buyers in Europe, said Homayoun Falakshahi, a senior analyst of crude markets at data analytics platform Kpler."Higher freight costs to move oil from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean or Northwest Europe have made Guyanese crude comparatively more interesting for European refiners," he added.Producers in Guyana also almost doubled shipments to the United States last year to some 23,000 bpd, while exports to Asia increased in smaller magnitude to around 139,000 bpd, the LSEG data showed. Ethiopian On Northbourne might look like a brand-new restaurant, but it marks the return of a Canberra icon to the Jolimont building.Dining here is a chance for Canberrans to explore the diversity and incredible flavours of Ethiopian food, served by a family who have become a local institution for their hospitality and food.Elsa Berhane and Girmay Abraha owned and ran Global Cafe for 11 years before closing shop due to the impacts of COVID-19. In the meantime, they’ve been running Flavours of Ethiopia on Allara Street, but when an opportunity came up to open a second venue close to their old location, they jumped at the chance.“Our first business was here; we started here!” Elsa told Region.“Global Cafe was just a small takeaway, but this is bigger, more classy, with a big kitchen, a full bar and our international beer.”Girmay agreed: “We wanted to show more. We have a lot to offer.”Ethiopian On Northbourne has a much larger menu than either of Elsa and Girmay’s previous businesses, allowing them to show off a broader range of Ethiopian foods. They’d mostly showcased wot dishes (stews) served from bain maries but now have Ethiopian salads, samosas, tibs (sauteed meat dishes) and desserts.I visited with my sister to taste the vegetarian beyaynetu, a sharing plate of many different dishes served on injera, a traditional sourdough flatbread. We also ordered the crunchy lentil samosas for our entree, which were served with a very tasty spiced yoghurt.Among the dishes on the platter was shiro, a rich and creamy dish served in a pot.Elsa explained that shiro is a dish made from ground chickpeas, creating a naturally creamy texture. We found the flavour a little smokey and spiced. Other dishes on the platter included duba wot (pumpkin stew) and misir wot (red lentil stew), both cooked with the traditional Ethiopian spice mix berbere, which is beautifully aromatic with just the right amount of heat.I also particularly enjoyed the fasolia side dish of spiced green beans and carrots. At $25 per person, the sharing plate is remarkably good value and very filling, with an extra plate of injera served on the side.Girmay said that they wanted their food to be accessible.“We want to be a local attraction, serving local wine, good coffee and good food at an affordable price … and in a good location!” he said.In addition to table service, the restaurant also serves quick, affordable lunches from a hot box around the corner to cater to the busy public servants in the area. For now, table service at lunchtime is by reservation only, and coffees are only available dine-in, but they’re hoping to expand that in the new year.The couple came to Canberra from Ethiopia in 2002, and Girmay enthusiastically describes himself as ‘a Canberra Ambassador’. He is also a big fan of Canberra region wines, especially Pankhurst Wines which Girmay was delighted to discover has a connection to Ethiopia. Detty December&nbsp;has taken the world by storm, with the phenomenon’s popularity spreading worldwide.&nbsp;Each December, many people, especially those in the African diaspora, travel to African cities like Lagos and Accra to participate in vibrant festivities in the form of parties, concerts, festivals, and events.While Detty December has always reflected Black joy, and the unification of diasporans around the globe is a beautiful sight to see, there are some problematic aspects that deserve attention.&nbsp;<h2>Detty December</h2>A common argument in favor of Detty December is that the influx of tourists during this time brings significant profits to many businesses.However, the reality is that these profits typically do not extend to the everyday local Ghanaian.The influx of tourists during peak seasons often overwhelms local infrastructure.It leads to overcrowded attractions, excludes locals, inflates prices on goods and services, and strains resources.Africans living abroad have been returning home in December to reunite with loved ones and spend the holidays on the continent for years, long before the term ‘Detty December’ was coined.However, what was once a celebratory homecoming has turned into an over-commercialized travel period for foreigners.It has been difficult to watch over the last few years, especially as a former resident and student of Accra.<img src="https://aukisscontent.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/8f74e58acDETTY-DECEMBER-CHRISTINA.jpg"><h2>The blatant exclusion of locals&nbsp;</h2>Detty December attracts foreigners from the Western world who have the privilege of earning in strong global currencies that create a clear social divide year-round between expats and locals, but one that is especially apparent in December due to the events happening.&nbsp;The lavish parties and events often make the gap between socioeconomic classes more apparent, alienating those without the financial means to partake.Many party promoters and business owners open venues and organize events with a primary focus on attracting foreigners, often neglecting the needs and interests of Ghanaian citizens in the process.&nbsp;<h2>The inflationary impact that comes with Detty December&nbsp;</h2>Many businesses, particularly in hospitality and tourism, raise prices significantly to capitalize on the influx of tourists and the high demand during this period.This is a common practice within the tourism industry worldwide during certain events or seasons. However, in&nbsp;Ghana, I’ve noticed that price hikes also extend to local transportation services and even street vendors.Accra practically turns into a playground for tourists, with a focus on high-end experiences and exclusive events, while locals struggle to access essential goods and services at reasonable prices. Many who are just simply trying to survive in a place they call home.As a result, prices rise across the board, disproportionately impacting lower-income individuals and local residents who are not participating in the festive spending.Not to mention that Ghana has been in an ongoing financial crisis the last few years, with inflation rates recently reported at&nbsp;<a href="https://statsghana.gov.gh/gssmain/fileUpload/Price%20Indices/Bulletin_%20CPI%20September%202024.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent;">21.5%, coming down to what was a record-high 50.3 percent just last year.</a><h5><img src="https://www.beingchristinajane.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/ghana-inflation-rates.png">Inflation rates in Ghana over the last year provided by&nbsp;<a href="https://statsghana.gov.gh/gssmain/fileUpload/Price%20Indices/Bulletin_%20CPI%20September%202024.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent;">Ghana Statistical Services</a></h5><h2>Foreigners centering Ghana as a cheap travel destination&nbsp;</h2>Over the last few years, I have witnessed an influx of online content from foreign visitors that particularly centers services in Accra as being “cheap.”&nbsp;They’ll take out their phones to record,&nbsp;<a href="https://newlinesmag.com/spotlight/detty-december-is-pricing-nigerians-out-of-the-salon-chair/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent;">then post and rave about services like braids being only $40</a>, a similar issue taking place in Lagos. However, they fail to realize that they may be contributing to a larger problem. Locals cannot afford those same rates, some of which remain even after tourists leave.I stand by the notion that calling a country cheap to travel to can create a host of issues once mass tourism in that particular de becomes an issue, which has happened in Ghana.&nbsp;Every year during Detty December, people take to social media platforms to vlog their experience (which I love). However, the problem comes in when videos rave about how cheap services are in the country.The people doing this are usually Western travelers who have the privilege of traveling to Ghana with a currency that, when converted, is usually 10-14x Ghana’s currency, the cedi.While it may seem harmless, when visitors return home after having a great time in Ghana, remember that aside from expats, most local people are likely not making a fraction of that amount.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2>Tips for being mindful during Detty December&nbsp;</h2>While I agree that this is primarily an issue for those in positions of power to address—specifically in terms of how citizens can be protected and prioritized amid all these initiatives—there are still actions aspiring visitors can take to be part of the solution.These tips can hopefully help you be more intentional if you are visiting Ghana during Detty December.<h3>Support as many Ghanaian-owned businesses as possible</h3>Foreign ownership is prominent in Ghana, and many establishments are not Ghanaian-owned. As a result, the chances that profits are being reinvested back into the local economy may be lower.During your trip to Ghana, try to support local Ghanaian businesses as a small yet meaningful way to contribute to the country’s economic growth.&nbsp;By purchasing goods and services from Ghanaian-owned vendors, you might be helping those owners create jobs, foster entrepreneurship, and empower communities. The Problematic Realities of Detty December in Ghana

My good people, we are finally in the midst of Detty December! For this month’s column, I’ve compiled a list of concerts, festivals, and fetes across Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa where you can catch some of the hottests acts and hear some of the best music, like Everyday People and Days Like This, two traveling parties making multiple stops on the continent.But first, some context: Across many African nations – and most famously in the pop culture capitals of Lagos, Nigeria, and Accra, Ghana – December into early January is a festive season where pleasure becomes paramount (read “detty” as “Dirty” in any number of accents, recognizing the hedonistic nature of the season). The globe’s biggest Afropop stars throw their own shows back home or headline massive festivals, events of all kinds abound, beaches get packed out with buzzing groups of friends and family, and for many, schools close, work slows, and the joyful gatherings seem never ending.&nbsp;Since I was a little girl growing up on the American East Coast, my parents always prized their visits back to their native Sierra Leone in December, first taking me when I was nine years old in 2002. Whether we’re called JC (“Jus Cam” or “Just Came”), IJGB (“I Just Got Back”), or something else, many diasporans head to Africa to take advantage of holiday vacation time, reconnect with family, and escape the stressors of the hyper-capitalist West. Increasingly, though, travellers who only know Africa as a stolen homeland have made their way there too, raising the awareness of Detty December beyond locals, immigrants, and their children to a retreat for Black folks worldwide.&nbsp;In furthering this phenomenon, 2019 is particularly notable. That’s when Ghana celebrated a tourism initiative called the Year of Return. In commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the world-changing horror of enslaved Africans’ arrival in the English colony of Virginia, Ghanaian officials encouraged African Americans and other Black diasporans to visit. The country uncomplicated the visa approval process by offering visas on arrival (a program continued in the festive seasons since) and promoted a bustling calendar of cultural events. “We know of the extraordinary achievements and contributions they [Africans in the diaspora] made to the lives of the Americans, and it is important that this symbolic year—400 years later—we commemorate their existence and their sacrifices,” outgoing Ghanaian president President Nana Akufo-Addo said in 2018 while formally launching the Year of Return in Washington D.C.&nbsp;Detty December is a sweet time of year, but I need not sugar coat it: it’s also a complicated one. Getting to these places in December is a massive expense, especially as flights into Africa jump into the thousands for roundtrips – and have only gotten more expensive since Covid dramatically slowed travel in 2020. On the ground, cities like Lagos and Accra see price gouging in December as commerce targets the influx of much wealthier visitors than most folks living in these cites. Last year, Chance the Rapper and I discussed concerns that while festivals like the one he threw in 2023 create business and employment opportunities in the area, those undertakings could be marginalizing locals, too. However, in a report for OkayAfrica, Rolling Stone contributor Nelson C.J. noted that events businesses in Lagos and Accra are seeing opportunities and revenues scale back this year amidst ongoing economic crises.If you find yourself on the more privileged side of the economic spectrum, consider donating some of your Detty December time (or cash) to service opportunities. If you’ll be in Accra on December 27 and have made your parents proud by becoming a medical professional, you could sign up to volunteer at the Community Health Fair organized by the company behind one of the cities premier music festivals, AfroFuture, Black Health Connect, and Distant Relatives. There, they aim to provide 1,500 community members with screenings for blood pressure issues, diabetes, sexually transmitted infections, and malaria, among other services. I also learned about young Nigerians creating their own initiatives through Eche Emole, co-founder of the African travel hub AfroPass and community Afropolitan that helped me navigate Ghana last year. Entrepreneurs Olayinka Lawal, Oladoyin Oladapo, and Ruth Lawansin’s I Just Gave Back fundraiser is supporting four distinct philanthropic organizations serving youth and education, while interpersonal violence disruptor Nneka Obiekwe is raising money towards abuse survivors. A GUIDE TO AFRICA’S DETTY DECEMBER

There have been 65 Album of The Year winners since the Grammy Awards began, with some becoming staples in the ceremony's legacy. The race for the night's highest honor is always tight, and the Recording Academy's choice isn't always met with favorable reactions. Several times, the results have ended in uproar. In recent years, this has happened mostly when a different artist has won over Beyoncé. Despite being the most-awarded artist in Grammy history, Beyoncé has never received the Album of The Year Grammy. However, the Grammys have honored a handful of other legendary artists with the award.In 1992, Whitney Houston won Album of The Year for The Bodyguard, making her only the second Black woman to take home the award. In 2010, Taylor Swift became the youngest-ever recipient until Billie Eilish took over that title in 2020. However, some incredible artists like Mariah Carey, Elton John, and Prince never received the award despite making a massive impact on the music industry. Though there have been some poor choices, there have also been times when the Grammys got it right, resulting in some iconic wins. The following are the 10 best, from cultural to musical impact.At the 2016 Grammys, Taylor Swift took home her second Album of The Year trophy. While she was up against some worthy opponents, there was no denying 1989 was the biggest album of the year. It was hard to turn on a pop radio station without hearing one of Swift's 1989 singles. This was also the era when Swift pulled her music from Spotify, so 1989's success came mostly without streaming, though it did remain on Apple Music. After losing Album of The Year for her previous album, Red, Swift made a drastic shift, abandoning country and diving headfirst into pop.It was a huge risk, as no other country artist had ever successfully crossed over into pop music. Swift, however, took it and succeeded, as she often does. Before the awards, Kanye West had released his song "Famous," which ended their brief friendship and continued their decades-long feud. Swift went on to win the award twice more, becoming the artist with the most Album of The Year wins. Her 1989 win, however, was the most memorable.The Beatles became a phenomenon when they hit the music scene, sparking a hysteria coined Beatlemania. It wasn't until their eighth studio album at the end of the 60s, however, that they'd take home Album of The Year. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band included tracks like "With a Little Help from My Friends" and "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds."The two tracks would go on to become some of their most well-known hits. The Beatles' Album of The Year win also marked the first time a rock album took home the coveted award. It was long deserved as they'd already had eleven #1 albums before finally winning Album of The Year.Before Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo made waves with their angry breakup songs, Alanis Morrisette took the world by storm with her celebration of female rage titled Jagged Little Pill. The album included her best-known song to date, "You Oughta Know," which both Swift and Rodrigo sang with her on their respective tours. Women have been shamed for their anger throughout history, but with Jagged Little Pill, Morisette encouraged women to embrace their rage.The album would inspire a Broadway musical in 2019 and would become the blueprint for other singer-songwriters looking to express their bitter emotions through music. This is now a more common theme in modern music, but it may not be as prevalent were it not for Jagged Little Pill. This cultural impact no doubt makes this a memorable Album of The Year win, especially seeing how it has since paved the way for other artists like Morrisette to achieve a similar feat.Bob Dylan was a trailblazer in folk music. He was also fearless in terms of experimenting with new sounds, no matter how much it angered his fans. A Complete Unknown takes audiences through Dylan's first time performing his rock-inspired album, which didn't go over well with the crowd.Despite his legacy, it wasn't until 1998 that Dylan won his first Album of The Year for one of his solo albums. Dylan's win was long overdue and well-deserved, as Time Out of Mind had several legendary tracks, including "Make You Feel My Love." The song would go on to be covered several times, most notably by Adele for her 2008 album, 19.Carole King is one of the most prolific singer-songwriters in music history, acting as an inspiration for the ones who would come after her. Tapestry was a profound album, with tracks like "It's Too Late," which took home Record of The Year, and "You've Got A Friend," which took home Song of The Year. Her Song of The Year win even made her the first woman to win the award.In 2014, Tapestry's track "Beautiful" inspired the Broadway musical about her life, and she'd return to the Grammys that year to sing the song with Sara Bareilles. King was only the third woman to win Album of The Year, signifying just how impactful the album was and what her legacy would be. 26 years after her win, Tapestry was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.In 1974, Stevie Wonder won Album of The Year with "Innervisions" and became the first Black artist ever to take the award home. The crowd erupted in applause as Cher presented Wonder with the golden trophy. Wonder gave a powerful speech, hoping his music would continue to influence a better future.The singer would win the award two more times, becoming one of three artists with the most wins until Taylor Swift broke the record in 2024. However, his first win will always be the most iconic, as it broke down barriers for Black artists who would come after him. This easily makes Wonder's win one of the best in Grammys history.Frank Sinatra was the second artist to ever win Album of The Year back in 1960. However, he broke a special record in 1967 with his win for A Man and His Music. Not only did the album make Sinatra the first artist to win the award three times, but it was also the first time an artist consecutively won Album of The Year. The Chairman of the Board won in 1966 for his album September of My Years before winning again at the following ceremony.To this day, Sinatra and Stevie Wonder are the only artists to ever win Album of The Year two years in a row. A Man and His Music was made up of mostly re-recordings of Sinatra's previously released songs and acted as a celebration of his revolutionary career. The previously released songs made the win more impressive, as Sinatra didn't even have to release new music for the Academy to celebrate his work.Lauryn Hill was the third Black woman to win Album of The Year at the Grammys. Part of what made the moment so special was that Whitney Houston presented the award to her, encouraging the crowd to cheer for Hill's big win. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was Hill's first and only solo album, making her win an even bigger accomplishment, especially because she was up against some big names.Hill beat out Madonna, Sheryl Crow, and Shania Twain with her win, so it was quite profound. In her acceptance speech, she highlighted how special it was to win for a hip-hop album as Houston excitedly cheered in the background. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was one of the most acclaimed albums of 1998, and remains highly praised to this day.Fleetwood Mac's album Rumours is #7 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. The publication referred to it as the best breakup album ever released, and Grammy voters seemed to agree it was excellent. The album is flooded with iconic breakup tracks, with the 2004 remastered version including the legendary Fleetwood Mac track "Silver Springs."Rumours remains one of the best-selling albums of all time, with all four of its released singles charting in the top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100. The album has incredible lore with all the behind-the-scenes breakup drama, which only adds to its legacy. However, even without the stories, the music stands on its own and was well-deserving of the Grammys' highest honor of the night. Only one other Album of The Year win manages to best this iconic album.One Album of The Year winner stands out among the 64 others, and that's Michael Jackson's Thriller. The album remains the best-selling of all time, and was a pivotal moment in Jackson's career. Similar to Taylor Swift's pivot to pop music, Jackson was frustrated when Off the Wall wasn't nominated for Album of The Year. The only nominations he received were for his single "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough." Jackson was also frustrated about being boxed into the R&amp;B genre, so he set out to become the King of Pop. Needless to say, he succeeded beyond his wildest dreams.Thriller's win represented all the hard work Jackson had put into his career. The singer accepted the award in his bedazzled jacket and iconic sparkly glove, taking the stage with legendary producer Quincy Jones. Thriller was the blueprint for all the pop albums that came after it, and Michael Jackson is still the blueprint for modern pop stars. While the Grammys will continue to hand out their Album of The Year trophy to several more excited recipients, it will be hard to beat the legacy of Michael Jackson's Thriller.

Unfortunately that means you can't use TikTok for now."Then, on Sunday, the app was back up and running with a message: "Thanks for your patience and support. As a result of President Trump's efforts, TikTok is back in the US!"However, that was only for people who already had the app - it was still unavailable to download on app stores in the US.Posting on Truth Social, a social media platform he owns, Trump said: "I'm asking companies not to let TikTok stay dark!"Trump said he would issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period of time before the ban is introduced, "so that we can make a deal to protect our national security".TikTok boss Shou Zi Chew is expected at Trump's inauguration on Monday afternoon.An executive order is an instruction from the president which has the weight of the law behind it.His order, he said, would give the company time to find a US partner to buy half of the company."I would like the United States to have a 50% ownership position in a joint venture. By doing this, we save TikTok, keep it in good hands and allow it to stay up," he said.The Biden administration made clear they would not enforce the law - so another option would be for Trump to follow suit and allow the law to stand but tell the Department of Justice (DoJ) to ignore it.The government would be effectively telling Apple and Google they will not be punished for continuing to allow people to download TikTok onto their devices, meaning the law would remain in place but would essentially be redundant.Obviously, the firms might be uncomfortable about breaking the law even if they have been told doing so is fine - as it would be effectively requiring them to take the president's word for it that they will not face punishment.Up until now, ByteDance has been resolute that no sale of its prize asset in the US is on the table.But could that change now that it has actually been banned?Potential buyers continue to line up - with Bloomberg News reporting on Tuesday that the firm was looking at a sale to billionaire Elon Musk, though TikTok described this as "pure fiction".Trump's former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and billionaire businessman Frank McCourt are among those who have previously expressed an interest in buying it.Mr McCourt, a former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, said he had secured $20bn in verbal commitments from a consortium of investors to bid for TikTok.There is an even more left field - and considerably less serious - proposed owner.The biggest YouTuber in the world Jimmy Donaldson - AKA MrBeast - has claimed he is now in the running to make a deal after he had billionaires reaching out to him about it.TikTok was the only ByteDance app which became available again after the ban - though only for people who already had the app.It's still unavailable to download from Apple and Google's app stores.As of Monday morning, other apps owned by the company are still unavailable to use in the US, The Verge reports.These include Lemon8, another social media app which has been compared to Pinterest, and CapCut, a video editing app.Meanwhile Marvel Snap, a digital card game published by a ByteDance subsidiary, also went down - which caught even its US-based developer Second Dinner off guard.The company posted on X on Sunday that the outage was a "surprise", and later said it "hoped to have it back online within 24 hours".TikTok says it has 170 million users in the US who, on average, spent 51 minutes per day on the app in 2024.While its future is still a little uncertain, rivals such as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts may benefit.Users bring advertisers - so this could be a big financial boost to those platforms."Chief marketing officers who we've spoken with confirmed that they will divert their media dollars to Meta and Google if they can no longer advertise on TikTok," said Kelsey Chickering, an analyst at market research company Forrester.Other potential winners include Twitch, which made its name on hosting livestreams - a popular feature on TikTok. Recently I had many tests and the good news is that I am in excellent shape except for emphysema. Mia le Roux who was set to represent South Africa at the Miss Universe finals this weekend in Mexico has pulled out of the competition, organisers have announced, citing health concerns.&nbsp;The 28-year-old&nbsp;made history as the first-ever deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa in August, following a controversy-hit competition which saw one finalist withdraw after being trolled over her Nigerian heritage.She had spent weeks in Mexico preparing for the finale of the prestigious beauty contest.&nbsp;The Miss South Africa organisation in a statement said Ms Le Roux's health and well-being "are our utmost priority" and pledged to support her until she "returns to full health".&nbsp;The last-minute withdrawal means South Africa will not be represented at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant, where Ms Le Roux was among 120 beauty queens vying for the coveted title."Making this decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed upon me," she said in the statement.&nbsp;"However, I am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery so that I may continue to serve my country with full strength.”She has not disclosed the nature of the health problem.The Miss South Africa organisation said Ms Le Roux had shown “incredible courage and grace throughout this difficult period”.&nbsp;"Our hearts are with her as she takes the necessary steps toward recovery,” the organisation added.&nbsp;Last month, Ms Le Roux expressed her excitement about the chance to represent South Africa on the Miss Universe stage terming it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for my voice to be heard".She said then that she hoped to showcase her country’s "beautiful diversity".She was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at the age of one and has a cochlear implant to help her perceive sound.In an earlier interview, she said it had taken two years of speech therapy before she was able to say her first words.
