A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from stripping temporary protected status from up to 350,000 Haitians, a status that allows them to legally live and work in the United States amid the turmoil in their homeland.Judge Ana Reyes issued a temporary stay that prevents Kristi Noem, the US homeland security secretary, from implementing her decision to remove the status known as TPS, which was scheduled to expire on Tuesday.Reyes notes that Noem, in announcing her decision to revoke TPS for Haitians, referred to those seeking refuge in the US as “killers, leeches, or entitlement junkies”.She then notes that the plaintiffs who asked her to block the order, five Haitian TPS holders, “are not, it emerges, ‘killers, leeches, or entitlement junkies’”.“They are instead: Fritz Emmanuel Lesly Miot, a neuroscientist researching Alzheimer’s disease; Rudolph Civil, a software engineer at a national bank; Marlene Gail Noble, a laboratory assistant in a toxicology department; Marica Merline Laguerre, a college economics major; and Vilbrun Dorsainvil, a full-time registered nurse”, the judge added.Reyes said in an accompanying 83-page opinion that plaintiffs were likely to prevail on the merits of the case and that she found it “substantially likely” that Noem preordained her termination decision because of “hostility to nonwhite immigrants”.“During the stay, the Termination shall be null, void, and of no legal effect,” the judge said in her two-page order, adding that for now, the termination has no bearing on their ability to work and to be protected from detention and deportation.Temporary protected status can be granted by the homeland security secretary if conditions in home countries are deemed unsafe for return due to a natural disaster, political instability or other dangers. While it grants TPS holders the right to live and work in the US, it does not provide a legal pathway to citizenship.The Trump administration has aggressively sought to remove the protection, making more people eligible for deportation. Ghanaian Engineering Reconstruction team of the Ghana Armed Forces and the 1 Engineering Regiment of the Jamaican Defence Force (JDF) have recorded significant progress in rebuilding homes in Black River and Saint Elizabeth communities following the recent Hurricane that struck Jamaica. Following the disaster which occurred in October 2025, the government deployed 54 personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces‘ 14 Engineer Brigade, Engineer Contingent 1 to Jamaica to support national rebuilding efforts. Communities in these areas in Jamaica were severely hit by the Hurricane Melissa and are being steadily rebuilt. As part of Ghana’s humanitarian commitment, Ghana’s reconstruction team is working alongside international partners including the Jamaican Defence Force to rebuild homes and support livelihood of victims. The mission reflects solidarity, service and shared resilience. Leader of the Ghanaian Engineering Reconstruction team, Colonel Emmanuel Assiah met with Foreign Minister for Jamaica, Camina Johnson Smith upon the team’s arrival in Jamaica. Thirty years ago, long before running became a staple of urban life in Kingston, a small group of early-morning joggers at the Mona Dam unknowingly laid the foundation for what would become one of Jamaica’s most influential running organisations. They were simply a cluster of runners who stayed on the path longer than most, cooling down at dusk while talking about running shoes, mileage, and the big dream, tackling a marathon together one day.From those casual conversations came the idea of forming a club. A meeting was called, the decision was made and, by 1996, the newly formed Jamdammers Running Club was training for its first international marathon – the Marine Corps Marathon. The rest, as Dr Kemroy Johnson, current president, said, “is history”.A name rooted in Jamaica’s running culture, the club’s unique name is itself part of the lore. Since their home base was the Mona Dam, the earliest suggestion was ‘DamJammers’. Eventually, the group settled on a name that honoured the space that shaped them, while also reflecting national identity: Jam for Jamaica, and Dammers for the runners who began their journey circling the Mona Dam.Planting the seeds of road running in Jamaica long before running clubs and runners dotted Kingston’s roadways, Jamdammers was providing structure, weekly Saturday runs, mid-week group workouts, and the kind of social support that encouraged ordinary Jamaicans to lace up and join in.“We set the template for others to follow,” Johnson reflected. “We create a running space where people feel a sense of belonging, no matter your fitness level.”At the time, recreational running was rare. Road races were dominated by student-athletes or members of formal track clubs.“People who saw us running on the road thought we were crazy,” he said laughing. But today, early-morning runners and walkers are a common sight, part of a wellness culture that Jamdammers helped ignite.The club’s influence goes much deeper than physical training. Members credit their involvement with improving their mental and social well-being, introducing them to new friendships, new cities through destination races, and a community built on camaraderie.A club that helped shape major national events, in addition to running together, Jamdammers played a significant role in building Jamaica’s modern road-racing calendar.Their first major event was the 1999 Sagicor SIGMA Corporate Run, when the group was approached by SIGMA Investments for help with conceptualising a charity race for Corporate Jamaica. At the time, road-racing infrastructure was minimal, but Jamdammers stepped forward. The running club also maintains weekly Saturday morning community runs across Kingston, offering runners and walkers up to 10 miles of group training, and has hosted ‘Runners Unite’ events, welcoming all local running clubs.Beyond athletics, the club’s primary outreach focus has been its longstanding support for Special Olympics Jamaica, reinforcing its mission of inclusivity and service.The birth of the Reggae Marathon, a Jamaican original, one of Jamdammers’ boldest undertakings, came in 2000 when nearly 40 members travelled to the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon in San Diego. The course featured live music, including a reggae band, sparking an idea that would transform Jamaica’s running landscape.“That experience set off the momentum to up our game,” Johnson said.“We wanted to create a unique, world-class international event in the home of reggae.”With vision, innovation, and volunteer power, the Reggae Marathon was born. Over the past 25 years, it has attracted thousands of international participants who return again and again, often citing the warmth, culture, and hospitality that Jamdammers built into the race experience.This year’s Reggae Marathon held special significance. The Electricity Company of Ghana has announced a series of planned and emergency maintenance works across its operational regions, scheduled to take place from Sunday, March 1, through to Thursday, March 5, 2026. The exercises, aimed at improving service delivery and network reliability, will result in temporary power outages in several communities within the Greater Accra, Tema, Accra East, and Accra West regions. In a statement signed by the Communications Department and issued on Friday, February 27, ECG assured residents that the disruptions are necessary to undertake critical infrastructure improvements. "ECG will undertake planned maintenance works to improve service delivery. This will result in a temporary outage," the company stated in multiple notices circulated to the public. The first of the outages kicks off on Sunday, March 1, affecting residents in the Greater Accra Region's Trassaco Valley Enclave and surrounding areas. The exercise is scheduled to run from 9:00am to 3:00pm. On the same day, the Tema Region will see an interruption for industrial and commercial customers along Western Rod, including Early Power, Apollo Steel, Crown Can, De-Simone, Tropical Cable, Multi Pac, Jon Moore, Cal Bank, La Bianca, and surrounding areas, also from 9:00am to 3:00pm. The Accra West Region will also experience an outage on Sunday, though this has been classified as an emergency maintenance. Areas affected include La Darkuman, Kokompe, and their environs. The company noted that this emergency work is necessary to address urgent network faults. "ECG regrets the inconvenience that will arise as a result of this exercise," the notice read. The Tema Region will also see outages on the same day in Spintex Kotobabi, Inkoom Hospital, Community 11 areas including Monte Carlo, Shell Filling Station, and Gyan Towers, as well as CAC in Community 5, Community 3, and surrounding areas. The Accra West Region will not be left out, with Red Top, Old Barrier, New Aplaku, Kings University, and surrounding areas affected from 9:00am to 5:00pm. On Wednesday, March 4, the Accra West Region takes the spotlight again with maintenance works affecting Tunga, New Century, Dansoman Police Station, Dansoman Market, Weija Junction, Tetegu, and surrounding areas. Societe Generale Ghana PLC recorded a profit after tax of GH¢397 million for the year ended December 31, 2025, representing a 28 per cent decline from the GH¢551.3 million posted in the previous year, as the bank navigated a sharply changing macroeconomic landscape characterised by falling interest rates and a strong currency rebound.The bank's total operating income dipped by 6.8 percent to GH¢1.36 billion, compared to GH¢1.46 billion in 2024. This moderation was largely driven by a 45.3 per cent contraction in net income from other financial instruments and a 143 per cent swing in other operating income, which turned into a loss of GH¢59.8 million from a gain of GH¢138.9 million the prior year. Net trading income, however, more than doubled to GH¢122.3 million, providing a crucial buffer against pressures elsewhere.Managing Director Hakim Ouzzani, in his review accompanying the annual report, described the year as one of transition for the banking sector. "In 2025, Ghana's economy showed marked improvement, with sharp decline in inflation, easing interest rates, and a stronger cedi. Within the banking sector, this represented a shift from the exceptional gains of a high-interest-rate environment to more normalized conditions, emphasizing sustainable growth, operational efficiency, and asset quality," he stated.Board Chair Margaret Boateng Sekyere added context on the external factors at play, noting that the Ghana cedi recorded a strong recovery during the year. "As at end of December 2025, the cedi recorded strongly against the major trading currencies, appreciating on year-on-year basis to USD/GHS 10.45," she noted in her statement.Net interest income, the bank's core earnings engine, remained relatively resilient, edging up by 5.7 per cent to GH¢1.19 billion from GH¢1.12 billion, despite the sharp decline in policy rates from 27 per cent to 18 percent over the course of the year. This performance was underpinned by disciplined balance sheet management, which helped preserve margins even as interest income on placements and investments moderated.A notable highlight was the significant improvement in asset quality. The bank recorded a net impairment gain of GH¢33.6 million, a stark reversal from the GH¢103.3 million impairment charge taken in 2024. This improvement reflects recoveries, including a GH¢8.9 million recovery from the final liquidation of YUP Ghana's indebtedness, as well as stricter credit discipline across the loan book.Operating expenses, however, grew sharply by 50.8 percent to GH¢774.9 million, driven largely by a 162.6 per cent surge in general expenses, which included higher IT support costs and professional fees. Personnel expenses also rose by 12.6 per cent to GH¢275.6 million, reflecting investment in staff development and salary adjustments.The bank's balance sheet contracted slightly, with total assets declining to GH¢9.68 billion from GH¢10.40 billion in 2024. This reduction was primarily due to the translation effect of the cedi's appreciation on foreign currency-denominated assets. Loans and advances to customers decreased by 10.4 per cent to GH¢4.49 billion, while deposits from customers also dipped by 6.1 per cent to GH¢5.84 billion.Despite the lower profit outturn, the bank's capital position remained robust. Shareholders' funds increased to GH¢2.60 billion, supported by retained earnings of GH¢1.15 billion and a statutory reserve of GH¢544.5 million. The capital adequacy ratio strengthened to 23.4 percent, well above the regulatory minimum of 13 percent, even after accounting for the full implementation of IFRS 9 expected credit loss provisions without the reliefs that were applied in the prior year's calculation.The bank's share price performed exceptionally well during the year, increasing by 199 percent from GH¢1.50 at the beginning of the year to GH¢44.49 at year-end, reflecting strong investor confidence in the bank's long-term strategy and growth trajectory.In line with its commitment to shareholder returns, the board has recommended a final dividend of GH¢0.34 per share, though this remains subject to regulatory approval. The dividend, if approved, will be paid out of the retained earnings of GH¢1.15 billion carried forward into 2026.Looking ahead, Mr Ouzzani expressed confidence in the bank's positioning. "With a Return on Equity of 15.1 per cent, shareholders' funds increasing, and strong capital and liquidity buffers, your bank is well positioned to support customers and expand lending as private-sector activity continues to recover," he stated.

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture expects all 900 irrigation pumps seized from illegal mining sites to be in use on farms by Friday, following their distribution to nine regions. This was announced at a press briefing held in Accra on Monday [November 24, 2025], where the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr Eric Opoku, responded to questions on the status of the equipment. Mr Opoku said the pumps were taken from illegal mining operations. Legal mandate Ghana’s Data Protection Act (DPA) provides a foundation for protecting patient data, which is classified as “special personal data” due to its highly sensitive nature. The DPA mandates that anyone processing this data must do so lawfully and reasonably, "without infringing the privacy rights" of the patient. Crucially, the DPA's Lawfulness of Processing principle generally requires the prior consent of the data subject.While the law permits processing special data for “medical purposes” (diagnosis, care, research) when a health professional is involved and bound by a duty of confidentiality, this framework places a clear and immediate responsibility on both the former processor (LHIMS) and the new one (GHIMS) to maintain absolute confidentiality and apply stringent data security safeguards. Human cost LHIMS' refusal to hand over administrative access to the nation’s health data is more than a contractual dispute; it is a profound human rights issue. When hospitals across the country were logged out, the action constituted a direct denial of the patient’s fundamental right to health and, potentially, the right to life. Patient medical history is the bedrock of safe and effective care. The instant lack of access to this data, which includes critical information on past surgeries, chronic conditions, and medication regimens built up over years, forces healthcare providers to return to archaic folder systems and, worse, requires patients to attempt to "rebuild" their own medical history.Mitigating breach risk A key threat in the transition from LHIMS to GHIMS is the unauthorised retention or use of patient data by the previous vendor, LHIMS. Patients have a Data Subject Right to request that a data controller destroy or delete personal data when it no longer has the authorisation to retain it. The use of this historical data by LHIMS for secondary purposes, such as research without consent, would violate the DPA's Specification of Purpose and Compatibility of Further Processing principles. LHIMS collected data for patient care management under a contract; At the end of the contract, any further use or retention of the records could be termed as an unauthorised infringement. The Data Protection Commission (DPC) must intervene to enforce the destruction or handover of these records.Comparing frameworks Ghana's Data Protection Act (DPA) shares essential elements with Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is the global benchmark for data rights. Both legal frameworks emphasise explicit consent for processing, especially for sensitive data; and strong data subject rights (access, rectification, and erasure). However, the LHIMS case clearly demonstrated the risks of external data hosting.While the GDPR imposes strict rules on Cross-Border Transfers, requiring an 'adequate level of protection,' LHIMS's foreign-hosted infrastructure exposed Ghana's data to jurisdiction risk. The DPA is robust in principle, but enforcement and resource allocation to the DPC in Ghana remain a challenge compared to Europe's highly funded regulatory bodies.Recommendations to fully secure patient data under the new GHIMS platform and prevent future lapses, the following actions are critical:• The Data Protection Commission (DPC) must immediately take strong action against LHIMS to compel the full, verified destruction or secure transfer of all patient data. • Government must enact a clear policy requiring all critical national health data to be hosted within Ghana’s geographical borders, under state-controlled infrastructure, to ensure true and permanent data sovereignty.• The Data Protection Commission (DPC) must be provided with adequate financial and human resources to effectively monitor and enforce compliance, conduct mandatory audits of GHIMS, and investigate data breaches promptly.• Launch a campaign to inform Ghanaians of their Data Subject Rights under the DPA, especially concerning their health records, and the straightforward process for filing complaints with the DPC.The move to GHIMS is an opportunity to reset the standard for digital health security in Ghana. We must ensure that the governing law is not just a promise but is robustly enforced to protect the privacy and confidentiality of every Ghanaian patient.

GHIMS vrs LHIMS: How is patient data being protected in the process?

The Acting Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, says the authority has proposed a 120 per cent rise in service tariffs. This, he said, is to help stop patients from paying out of pocket at hospitals. Speaking in a television interview with Channel One TV on Wednesday (Nov 27, 2025), Dr Bampoe said the proposal followed a detailed review by a group of experts. He added that the law requires the NHIA to review both service and medicine tariffs each year. The medicines review has been completed, and the service tariffs are now before the NHIA board. After the board’s consideration, the proposal will be sent to the Minister of Health for approval. He said the current tariffs are not realistic, which is why some patients are still asked to pay at hospitals. According to him, many service providers attribute the practice to low tariff levels. “One of the areas of concern… one point in my three-point vision is to make sure patients have a proper experience when they go to hospitals. In many hospitals that is not happening now because they are asked to pay out of pocket. Health providers tell us that we are not paying realistic tariffs, and that is why that is happening. We think that once we pay those tariffs, then there will be no excuse for the health providers to ask patients to put their money in their pockets,” he said. Dr Bampoe also spoke about the NHIA’s plan to move from a claims payment body to what he described as strategic health purchasing. He said this approach uses government funding to shape health outcomes and improve service delivery. “We are a spending entity. We are trying to move away from being a claims payment mechanism to a strategic health purchasing provider, which means we are able to dictate health outcomes because of the financial muscle that government provides us with. We are able to determine the prices of medicines, the prices of services and even go onto the global stage and give some kind of platform to discuss what kind of health outcomes we want,” he said. He said the proposed rise forms part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening universal health coverage and improving patients’ experience in the health system. “The National Health Insurance Scheme… is to pay claims. But now what we are looking at is getting universal health coverage for all Ghanaians. And universal health coverage has three pillars… population coverage, service coverage and financial protection… so that every Ghanaian living everywhere can access quality health care without financial hardship,” he said. Dr Bampoe said the rise will only take effect after approval by the NHIA board and the Minister of Health. He added that the aim is to maintain health services in a way that protects patients from out-of-pocket payments.

A Senior Research Fellow at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), Professor Beverly Egyiri, has said that Ghana is witnessing a dangerous rise in antibiotic resistance. Antibiotics, also known as antimicrobials, are the medicines used to treat infections. Speaking at the Annual Research Meeting of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) on Tuesday [Nov 25, 2025],&nbsp;she said the resistance occurs when germs become so strong that the medicines meant to kill them no longer work. "This leads to treatment failures, prolonged illness and, in many cases, avoidable deaths," she said. The event was on the theme “Advancing Healthcare Through Impactful Research and Innovation.” She noted that many hospitals across the country are now battling infections that no longer respond to even the strongest antibiotics. “In many hospitals, doctors are moving from drug to drug, yet the patients still do not survive. Every delay in intervening represents a life lost, and this is happening in several hospitals on the continent,” she warned. <h3>Misuse </h3>Prof. Egyiri stated that the problem has been worsened by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, the ease with which people walk into pharmacies to buy them without prescriptions, and weak infection prevention and control systems in many health facilities. She added that the COVID-19 pandemic led to even more indiscriminate use of antibiotics, accelerating the resistance challenge. She further revealed that within African hospitals, several bacterial samples taken from patients are now resistant to nearly all available antibiotics including last-line treatment options that are usually reserved for the most severe infections. “In some of the cases we analysed, the bacteria were resistant to everything tested. This is extremely worrying,” she said. Another major concern, she said, is the region’s weak laboratory capacity. Only 1.3 per cent of laboratories in Africa are able to run the necessary tests to guide correct antibiotic use. “When we do not test, we are essentially flying blind,” she explained. <h3>Implementation </h3>Prof. Egyiri highlighted that although many African countries, including Ghana, have developed national action plans to tackle antibiotic resistance in line with the World Health Organization’s global strategy, implementation remains slow due to limited funding and inadequate enforcement of policies. <h3>Commitment </h3>The Director of Noguchi, Professor Dorothy Yeboah-Manu, also highlighted the Institute’s continued commitment to advancing Ghana’s biomedical research capacity. Additionally, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Hiroshi Yoshimoto, reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting scientific advancement in the country and commended Noguchi for its leadership in disease surveillance and public health research. And, as hip-hop’s 50th anniversary comes to a close, it ends with it a sobering reminder that Black men, including many rappers, face a life expectancy that’s among the lowest for any race and ethnicity group across the country,&nbsp;at 70 years old.&nbsp;When news broke in 2023 that Virginia-based rapper Magoo died at 50, it underscored the fragility around health and well-being for Black men. At the time, the hip-hop community was still in mourning over other deaths. DMX, dead at age 50. Biz Markie, 57. Coolio, just shy of 60. Heavy D, who collapsed outside his Beverly Hills home at age 44 due to a pulmonary embolism, or a blood clot in the lungs.&nbsp;Though death by gun violence and drug overdoses often make headlines, what’s missed are the ways Black men are disproportionately vulnerable to death due to cancer, heart disease, stroke and chronic conditions such as diabetes.“Premature death — often from chronic illnesses that can be prevented — is a reality for Black men whether or not hip-hop is in the room,” said Mark Anthony Neal, who chairs the Department of African &amp; African American Studies at Duke University.One might assume that high-profile rappers would have the money and means to tap into quality health care and preventive medicine. But the growing list of Black male rap stars who fail to live to old age shows their wealth does not exempt them from illness, and experts say the pressure they face as artists in the spotlight may exacerbate the health conditions among them.<h2>Racism, rap and risk</h2>Black Americans’ life expectancy is compromised not only by disease, but also in large part by the weathering effect of racism — a concept coined by public health researcher Arline T. Geronimus that the constant stress of living in a racist society wears down the body like a rock being worn down by the outdoor elements. Public health advocates say factors such as the lack of healthy food choices in Black neighborhoods and the lack of green spaces that encourage outdoor exercise lower the quality of life and increase daily stress.The history of medical racism that drives high rates of mistrust among Black folks can lead to delays in people seeking preventative care like screenings, which are key to early diagnosis and treatment. Add to that toxic masculinity, which encourages aggression, toughness and invincibility, and the ability of Black men to reach optimal health and well-being erodes.“It’s a gumbo mix of risk,” said Dr. Italo Brown, a clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine at Stanford University. For rappers, the health risks are compounded by what it means to create art in the public eye — the punishing schedule of appearances, marketing strategies that highlight gun violence and bragging rights, the 24/7 navigation of social media and the pressure of being slingshotted into the top 1% essentially overnight, he said. Exposure to vices and high risk behavior grows, leaving them even more vulnerable. Brown calls it hip-hop’s silent epidemic.&nbsp;“This is not by happenstance,” said Brown. The narrative that rappers are dying only due to violence and drugs is not what the data illustrates, he said. “It doesn’t explain the total risk that hip-hop artists face.”The business structure within hip-hop is not set up for protecting rap artists’ health, experts say.&nbsp;“With [record] labels, they’re essentially contract laborers. They don’t get health care. They don’t get retirement funds,” said Neal. “Why are we not talking about health plans for hip-hop artists? Neal would love to see hip-hop culture embrace the idea of artists going to the doctor and seeking support on a regular basis. “Part of hip-hop is this idea that we are invincible. We’re not.”Neal remembers Jay-Z’s&nbsp;4:44&nbsp;album, in which he raps, “my therapist said I relapsed,” and subsequent interviews in 2017 where the rap star revealed how therapy was helping him process a lifetime of suppressed emotions that led him to maintain a hard masculine shell.&nbsp;In a podcast interview&nbsp;on Tidal’s Rap Radar that spring, Jay-Z talked more about wellness in the music industry. “We have to watch our health, our physical health and what we’re doing with our bodies, but also our mental health. And, artist Nasir “Nas” Jones&nbsp;launched the Paid In Full Foundation, aimed at providing financial support to hip-hop’s pioneers, which could support quality health care.<h2>Changing what you can</h2>A lot of forces make it difficult for Black men to effectively prioritize their health, said Griffith, from Georgetown. “The only way to understand that is to understand the conditions and context of the lives of Black men. It’s not enough to look at them as just men, and it’s not enough to look at them as just Black,” he said.It’s important for them to take action on what’s within their control, and not take on too much stress regarding what’s outside of their control, those crushingly large issues of systemic racism that lie outside the scope of individual choices, said Griffith, with Georgetown.“Black men don’t necessarily go to the doctor for preventative screening,” he said. He recommends folks prioritize routine checkup and blood work, as well as finding ways to celebrate without compromising health. In March 2026, a massive statue of Christ the Redeemer was erected on Jabal Al-Salib ("Mount of the Cross" in Arabic) in the Lebanese town of Al Qaa, overlooking the Bekaa plain. Close to the Syrian border in the north, Al Qaa's population is predominantly Christian and has in recent history been subjected to extremist violence, caused by ISIS militants, a decade ago. Amongst Arab nations, Lebanon is home to one of the biggest Christian communities, where around 30% of the population follows Christianity.Designed by Lebanese architect George Makhlouf, the white-coloured statue is made of fiberglass, and more than three tonnes of steel were used to protect it from windy conditions. The statue is 16 metres tall, standing on a 10-metre base, making the whole 26-metre structure one of the largest monuments of Christ in the Middle East. The project was in the making for over a year and was the brainchild of Fady Awad, who comes from Al Qaa and saw the monument come to life with the support of the Al Qaa municipality and fellow locals. Some residents also hope that it will encourage religious tourism for pilgrims around the world. Africa and Europe will be shut out.Solar and lunar eclipses happen due to a precise alignment of the sun, moon and Earth. Tuesday's total eclipse of the moon comes two weeks after a ‘ring of fire’ solar eclipse that dazzled people and penguins in Antarctica.During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth is between the sun and full moon, casting a shadow that covers the moon.The so-called blood moon looks red because of stray bits of sunlight filtering through Earth's atmosphere."The moon isn't actually getting any light from the sun because the Earth is right between it blocking that direct light," says Dhara Patel, a space expert at the National Space Centre in the UK."But because the Earth has an atmosphere, what happens is sunlight sort of gets bent or refracted by the atmosphere of the Earth. Due to insecurity, the 11th edition of Amani festival will be held in Lubumbashi, southern DR Congo from April 10 to 12, 2026. “We are aware that there are several constraints the festival would face if it were organized in Goma, notably cancellations by artists who cannot travel to a zone that is not under Kinshasa’s control. So we believe this is among the reasons why the festival has been relocated,” saidAugustin Mosange, director of the Goma Cultural Center. Created in 2014, the Amani Festival has become a powerful symbol of peaceful co-existence in eastern part of Congo, where dozens of armed group wreak havoc. Amani embodies the commitment of a youth determined to make peace over war. This year, its absence in Goma leaves a bitter taste for many residents. “It is certainly a disappointment, a small disappointment, but we know it is also a way for the festival to survive despite the insecurity experienced here in the east of the country,” said David Kas, a resident. Since January 2025, Goma, capital of North Kivu province, has been under the control of Rwanda-backed M23 rebels. Launched in 2014 in Goma, the Amani Festival celebrates peace and living together. Each year, it brings together artists from the city, from across Africa, and beyond, attracting several thousand spectators. The government of Zimbabwe has ordered all churches operating in residential areas to install soundproofing and has imposed an immediate ban on the establishment of new fuel service stations in housing zones as part of a nationwide crackdown on urban disturbances.Speaking at a press conference on land-use applications on Thursday, chief director of spatial planning and development in the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works Mr Shingirai Mushamba said the measures were aimed at regulating obtrusive developments in residential neighbourhoods.“All places of worship operating in residential areas must conduct services in enclosed, soundproofed buildings,” Mr Mushamba said.He said retail businesses would also be restricted to designated commercial nodes and barred from operating wholesale or distribution activities within residential areas.Further, fuel service stations would no longer be permitted in residential zones unless they form part of approved shopping centres.“Fuel stations must comply with statutory buffer requirements and include road widening or turning lanes to manage traffic,” he said.Local authorities have been directed to suspend all land-use change applications unless they carry written approval from the provincial planning officer.The ministry also made public notification mandatory, requiring councils to inform stakeholders of proposed land-use changes through billboards, social media platforms, official websites and local radio stations.Meanwhile, an expedited waiver process for land-use changes will take effect on February 10, 2026, as the Government reviews the national moratorium on change-of-use applications imposed in May 2025.Under the new system, developers will submit waiver applications directly to local councils instead of central ministry offices, shifting initial processing to the local level.To maintain oversight, councils will be required to submit weekly tables of applications received, which will be vetted by provincial deputy directors before being forwarded to the Permanent Secretary.Mr Mushamba said compliance would be monitored through mandatory quarterly reports, with enforcement supported by a whole-of-council approach involving the Zimbabwe Republic Police, where necessary.

The killing of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in the opening wave of joint US-Israeli strikes has pushed the Islamic Republic into its most precarious moment since 1979. The operation targeted senior military and political leadership in what Washington described as a decisive effort to cripple Iran's command structure. By Saturday night, reports about Khamenei's death were circulating widely, setting off scenes few would have imagined possible just days earlier. Videos showed pockets of celebration in major Iranian cities. Similar scenes unfolded among large parts of the Iranian diaspora abroad. For many, the elimination of the supreme leader appeared to represent a historic rupture - an opening that years of civil resistance had failed to achieve on its own. Both the US president and Israel's prime minister used direct language in their public statements following the strikes. President Donald Trump urged Iranians to seize the opportunity to "take over your government". Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed the theme, arguing that regime change is both desirable and attainable. While the military phase of Operation Epic Fury, as the US have dubbed it, appeared tightly co-ordinated and largely under US control, the political appeal to the Iranian public remains far less predictable. On Sunday morning, Iranian state television formally confirmed Khamenei's death, before swiftly announcing the formation of a temporary council of three men to assume executive authority. Under Iran's constitution, the selection of a new supreme leader falls to the Assembly of Experts - an 88-member clerical body elected by popular vote for eight-year terms. However, the electoral process includes a critical limitation. All candidates for the Assembly must be vetted and approved by the Guardian Council. That 12-member body is itself deeply intertwined with the leadership structure, six members appointed directly by the supreme leader and six nominated by the judiciary and approved by parliament, with the judiciary chief also appointed by the supreme leader. In effect, Khamenei has had significant influence over the institution tasked with choosing his successor. The regime has moved quickly to project continuity and stability. By invoking constitutional mechanisms and activating the temporary governing arrangement, authorities aim to signal that the system remains intact despite the loss of its apex figure. Speculation has inevitably turned to possible successors. It is uncommon in Iran for potential candidates to be publicly identified in advance, and the process takes place behind closed doors. Within the Assembly of Experts, however, there is understood to be a small committee tasked with reviewing and narrowing down names, potentially presenting a shortlist to the full body once formal proceedings begin. The sessions are held behind closed doors and voting is not made public, limiting outside scrutiny. In recent years, there has been speculation that Khamenei's eldest son, Mojtaba, might be in the running. Yet with several of his father's most trusted commanders in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reportedly killed in the recent strikes, the internal balance of power may have shifted. The precedent from June 1989, when Khamenei himself emerged as supreme leader despite not being widely viewed as a frontrunner, is a reminder that the outcome can defy expectations. The selection process could move quickly, potentially concluding within a matter of days. Militarily, however, the Islamic Republic has absorbed a severe blow. Reports indicate that several senior commanders were killed in the initial strikes. Surviving officials remain under threat as aerial operations continue. The sense of vulnerability is tangible - command centres damaged, leadership decapitated, and decision-making compressed into crisis mode. Still, Iran has demonstrated an ability to retaliate. Within the first two days of strikes, Iranian forces launched attacks against US bases in several Arab countries, as well as targets in Israel. For the first time, missiles struck non-military sites in Dubai and a civilian airport in Kuwait - dramatically widening the conflict's geographic footprint. The escalation signals that, despite leadership losses, Iran retains operational capabilities and the will to use them. The prospect of further regional escalation now hangs over the crisis. From the point of view of Iran's leaders, if the conflict widens and its militant groups allies across the Middle East join the fight, Tehran could gain some leverage to press for a ceasefire or at least avoid a total surrender on terms dictated by the US and Israel. From another perspective, sustained military pressure, combined with renewed large-scale protests, could push the Islamic Republic toward systemic breakdown. Should elements of the security forces fragment or refuse orders, any formal constitutional transition process may quickly become irrelevant, overtaken by developments on the ground. The coming days will reveal whether the IRGC and other elements of the country's coercive apparatus can remain cohesive in the absence of its long-serving supreme leader. For now, all scenarios remain in play. The Islamic Republic appears to be holding a weaker hand than it did before the strikes - deprived of its central authority figure, stripped of key commanders, and exposed to continuing military pressure. Yet, it retains institutional structures, armed forces and a capacity for retaliation that complicate any straightforward path to regime change. The death of Ali Khamenei has pushed Iran into a volatile and uncertain phase. What happens next will depend on whether Tehran can maintain internal control under continued air strikes, whether protests gather momentum, and how far the fighting spreads across the region. The direction of events is likely to become clearer in the coming days, as all sides test their military limits and their political resolve.

Iran's regime is still intact - the coming days will show if it can hold out

Iran's state media has confirmed that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has been killed, after attacks across Iran by Israel and the US, which began on Saturday morning local time. The state media announcement of Ayatollah Khamenei's death came after US President Donald Trump said he was dead and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Khamenei's Tehran compound had been destroyed in "a powerful, surprise strike". Iran responded to the attack, which came two days after US-Iranian talks on Tehran's nuclear programme ended without a deal, by launching missiles and drones towards Israel and four Gulf Arab countries which host US military bases: Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE. Shortly after 09:30 local time (06:00 GMT) on Saturday, Iranian media reported explosions in the capital, Tehran. Pictures showed smoke over the city's Jomhouri Square and Hassan Abad Square. Explosions were also reportedly heard in several other cities across the country, including Karaj, near Tehran, Isfahan and Qom in the centre of the country, and Kermanshah in the west. A spokesman for the Iranian Red Crescent told local media 24 of Iran's 31 provinces had been hit in US and Israeli strikes. Videos circulating on social media showed people running in panic near sites of explosions. The sound of screams and crying could be heard in the background. Footage from Tehran verified by the BBC showed explosions within 1km (0.6 miles) of Leadership House, Khamenei's compound. It was not immediately clear whether he was there at the time of the strikes. Satellite imagery obtained by the BBC also showed signs of significant damage in the compound, including blackened buildings, debris and a column of smoke. On Saturday evening, Netanyahu said in a televised address that "we destroyed the compound of the tyrant Khamenei in the heart of Tehran". "There are many signs that the tyrant himself is no more," he added. Trump then wrote on Truth Social: "Khamenei, one of the most evil people in History, is dead." "He was unable to avoid our Intelligence and Highly Sophisticated Tracking Systems and, working closely with Israel, there was not a thing he, or the other leaders that have been killed along with him, could do." It was confirmed statement from Iran's Supreme National Security Council - read out by several state broadcast channels on Sunday morning local time - that Khamenei had been killed in his office. The office of President Masoud Pezeshkian in the capital was also reportedly targeted in the first wave of strikes. Iranian state TV said President Masoud Pezeshkian was "safe" and he later put out a statement. Despite a near-total internet blackout that monitors detected late on Saturday morning, several further waves of strikes and explosions were reported throughout the day. Iran's Civil Aviation Organisation has said the country's airspace is closed until further notice. On Saturday morning, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said his country had "launched a preemptive strike against Iran to remove threats" and warned Israelis to prepare for retaliatory missile and drone attacks. Just over an hour later, Trump confirmed US involvement in the strikes. "We're going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground. It will be totally again obliterated," he said in a video posted on Truth Social. "And we will ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon." It came after weeks of threats from Trump that he would order military action if Iran did not agree a new deal over its nuclear programme. Iran has said repeatedly its nuclear activities are entirely peaceful. Trump also said members of Iran's armed forces must lay down their weapons to get "complete immunity", or "face certain death". And he urged Iranian people to prepare to overthrow the clerical establishment. "When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country and the US had "operation to remove the existential threat posed by the terrorist regime in Iran". The US military's Central Command later said the allies wanted to "dismantle the Iranian regime's security apparatus, prioritising locations that posed an imminent threat". They reportedly included Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) command-and-control facilities, air defence capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and military airfields. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said about 200 fighter jets had taken part in an "extensive attack against the missile array and the defence systems" in western and central Iran. The jets simultaneously dropped hundreds of munitions on about 500 targets, it added. The IDF named seven senior Iranian defence officials who it said had been killed, including Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran's Defence Council and a trusted adviser to Khamenei, as well as IRGC commander Maj Gen Mohammad Pakpour and Defence Minister Brig Gen Aziz Nasirzadeh. An intelligence source and a military source told the BBC's US partner CBS that around 40 Iranian officials were killed in the strikes. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Israel and the US of launching a war that was "wholly unprovoked, illegal, and illegitimate". "Our powerful armed forces are prepared for this day and will teach the aggressors the lesson they deserve," he wrote on X. The Iranian defence ministry also vowed to deliver a "crushing and regret-inducing" response to what it called the "savage attack" by Israel and the US. The semi-official Tasnim news agency cited the IRGC as saying its forces had responded to the strikes by hitting multiple sites in Israel as well as five major US military facilities in the region - Al Udeid airbase in Qatar, Al Dhafra airbase in the United Arab Emirates, the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, Ali Al Salem airbase in Kuwait, and Muwaffaq Salti airbase in Jordan. The IRGC also said a US combat support vessel had come under "severe blows" from missiles, and that a US FP-132 radar system in Qatar had been "completely destroyed". The EU naval mission in the region, EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, meanwhile said that the IRGC had sent radio messages to vessels warning that "no ship is allowed to pass the Strait of Hormuz" in the Gulf, through which about 20% of global oil and gas shipments pass. Centcom said that its forces had "successfully defended against hundreds of Iranian missile and drone attacks". It added that no US casualties or combat-related injuries had been reported and that damage to US installations in the region was "minimal and has not impacted operations". Like millions of football fans who descended on Morocco for the African Cup of Nations final here in Rabat, and hundreds of millions more who watched globally, this has been an amazing tournament.&nbsp;The football infrastructure here has been absolutely worldclass. The quality, efficiency, and cost of the trains services are as good as, if not better than some of the best in the world. Moroccan hospitality before, during and after the tournament has been exceptional.&nbsp;Significant improvements though still need to be made in the overall quality of hotels and customer service, more so ahead of the soon-to-be jointly hosted 2030 #FIFAWorldCup to be held in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. I am confident Morocco will pull it off.For now, here are 12 takeaways, based on my up-close observations.1. #SENEGAL: While understandably frustrated by very poor officiating, walking off the pitch in protest risked match abandonment and damaged Africa’s global football image. It was a terrible call by the Senegalese coach that did not honor host country Morocco, the continent, #CAF or #FIFA. Thank God that #SadioMane had the presence of mind to stand his ground and convince his Senegalese teammates to return to the field and fight as men.2. #MOROCCO: Ahead of all CAF and FIFA sanctioned football events, Morocco must prioritize a more robust stadium security system to contain fan anger and prevent escalations from erupting into full blown riots when decisions go against the home team.&nbsp;It was unacceptable to see Moroccan stadium officials and players (Hakimi and others included) deliberately throw away the towel of the Senegalese goalkeeper (which is needed to wipe down gloves during play). The same antic was used against Nigeria, including a racist slur by a Moroccan fan who threw a banana at Nigerian goalkeeper #Nwabali.&nbsp;These antics were juvenile, unnecessary, and highly provocative.&nbsp;It really took a shine off of the exceptional and kind hospitality that Moroccans always go out of their way to extend to foreigners. (Topic for another time).3. #CAF: Africa’s apex football association, must enhance referee and VAR training to minimize controversial calls in high-stakes moments, and to reduce the likelihood of prolonged disputes and delays. In several of the tournament’s matches, the level of officiating fell well below acceptable international standards.&nbsp;Poor officiating in several matches undermined the credibility of the tournament..Calls were made that should not have been made. Calls were also not made that should have been made.&nbsp;Consequently, the media and fans were justified in their allegations or suspicions of official collusion favoring one team over the other.&nbsp;Whether true or not, is not the issue. Sometimes, perception is reality!4. #FIFA: should develop clear international protocols for handling team walk-offs, including immediate sanctions to Federations, coaches, and players, to deter similar actions in future tournaments.5. #SENEGAL: And every other country for that matter, needs a mature level-headed player in the mold of #SadioMane to de-escalate tensions swiftly. Thanks to his leadership, sanity prevailed, a full-blown crisis was avoided, the game resumed, and victory was secured.6. #MOROCCO: And all other countries, should avoid high-risk penalty techniques like the Panenka in pressure situations, unless the taker is mentally prepared, as Diaz’s tame effort proved costly. The same seemingly laissez faire approach decisively cost #Nigeria its Semi Final match against Morocco when #Chukwueze gifted the Moroccan goalkeeper.&nbsp;7. #CAF: Implement stricter time limits for VAR reviews to avoid extending stoppage time excessively (e.g. 24 minutes), which fueled frustration and chaos.8. #FIFA: Promote cross-confederation education on sportsmanship to counter perceptions of African football as chaotic, and to ensure fair play overrides national biases.9. #MOROCCO: As AFCON hosts, and ahead of the 2030 World Cup, consider this a test-run and invest in enhanced crowd management strategies, including riot police readiness, to safeguard players, officials and fans, during heated matches.10. #SENEGAL: Protesting soft penalties can backfire. The 16-20 minute delay highlighted poor sportsmanship. Any other referee could have called for a forfeit of the match in favor of Morocco, which would only have added to the shameful drama.11. #CAF: Enforce post-match reviews of referee decisions to build trust, and address complaints like Senegal’s disallowed goal that preceded the penalty drama.12. #FIFA: Monitor and advise tournament organizers especially in politically charged situations (for example in matches involving arch rivals Morocco and Algeria) and to prevent external factors, including excessive fan nationalism from escalating on-field disputes.By Victor Oladokun, Senior Advisor to Dr Akinwumi Adesina.

Guéla Doué pulled one back again with his heel in a goalmouth scramble after goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy clawed the ball away in the 73rd, but the Elephants' equalizer never came. Egypt is bidding for a record-extending eighth title. Super Eagles fly again Victor Osimhen scored one goal and set up another for Nigeria to down Algeria 2-0 for its place in the semifinals. The Super Eagles needed patience in Marrakech against the team with the best defense in the tournament after failing to take their chances in the first half — Akor Adams fired over when he had only Luca Zidane in the Algeria goal to beat, and Calvin Bassey had another effort cleared off the line. Osimhen finally scored after the break when he headed the ball back across Zidane’s direction of movement from Bruno Onyemaechi’s cross. It was the first goal at the tournament conceded by Zidane. But it was quickly followed by the second. The Egyptian Parliament says it’s working on legislation to regulate children’s exposure to what it called the “digital chaos” of social media. On Saturday, President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi urged MPs to pass a law limiting young people’s use of social media “until they reach an age when they can handle it properly.” The president's televised comments urged his government to look at other countries including Australia and the United Kingdom that are working on legislations to “restrict or ban” children from social media. Legislators will consult with the government and expert bodies to draft a law to protect Egyptian children from any risks that threaten their thought and behavior, the House of Representatives said in a statement late on Sunday. About 50 percent of children under 18 in Egypt use social media platforms where they are likely exposed to harmful content, cyberbullying and abuse, according to a 2024 report. In December, Australia became the first country to ban social media for children under 16. The move triggered fraught debates about technology use, privacy, child safety and mental health and has prompted other countries to consider similar measures. The British government said it will consider banning young teenagers from social media while tightening laws designed to protect children from harmful content and excessive screen time. Ava DuVernay and David Oyelowo are set to collaborate once more on the feature film Heist of Benin, marking their first director actor reunion since Selma.The project was unveiled Tuesday during Canal+’s presentation in Paris. Variety reports that the screenplay is written by Jesse Quiñones and that the film is positioned as “a thriller that intertwines art, love and restitution.” Oyelowo will star and produce under his Yoruba Saxon banner.The pairing has been years in the making. Oyelowo said the story finally aligned with what he and DuVernay had been seeking creatively.“Ava and I have been looking for the right story to tell together again. Ava DuVernay to Direct David Oyelowo Again in New Thriller Heist of Benin

DStv operator MultiChoice has lost 2.8 million subscribers since its height on 31 March 2023, declining from 17.3 million to 14.5 million, a reduction of over 16% in two years.MultiChoice’s new owner, French media conglomerate Groupe Canal+, recently published an investor presentation with charts illustrating MultiChoice’s decline in recent years.It showed that MultiChoice was not only declining in subscriber numbers but also in other key metrics, such as revenue and trading profit.MultiChoice’s decline has been evident in South Africa since 2016, when the company started losing its highest-value DStv Premium subscribers.That was the same year as Netflix’s global expansion. The company announced the global rollout of its services in January 2016 at CES.South Africa’s pay-TV giant was able to mask this decline through gains on its lower-tier packages and growth in the rest of Africa.When MultiChoice was spun out of Naspers in 2019, it started bundling Compact Plus subscribers in with DStv Premium, in a new “Premium market segment” category.This hid the decline of DStv Premium for a year before this new combined category also started recording lower numbers. In other words, by 2021, DStv Compact Plus was also in decline.MultiChoice also switched to reporting subscribers according to a 90-day active metric rather than the number of subscribers at 31 March and 30 September.Its year-end subscribers went into decline in 2022&nbsp;in South Africa, but the new 90-day active metric allowed MultiChoice to continue reporting subscriber growth in South Africa until its 2023 financial year.Subscriber growth in the rest of Africa also took a turn in 2023, with MultiChoice’s results across the group showing substantial subscriber declines in 2024 and 2025.These declines were evident in both the traditional year-end and 90-day active subscriber numbers reported by MultiChoice. <img src="https://mybroadband.co.za/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/MultiChoice-DStv-group-and-SA-subscribers-2012-2025.jpg"><img src="https://mybroadband.co.za/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/MultiChoice-DStv-90-day-active-subscriber-base-FY24-FY25-1200x519.jpg">In its last published financial results for the year ended 31 March 2025, before Canal+’s final takeover, MultiChoice blamed macroeconomic factors for its continued decline.“The past two financial years have been a period of significant financial disruption for economies, corporates and consumers across sub-Saharan Africa due to challenging macroeconomic factors,” it stated.“Combined with the impact of structural industry changes in video entertainment such as the rise of piracy, streaming services and social media, this has materially affected the overall performance of the MultiChoice Group.”Aside from losing 2.8 million traditional linear TV subscribers, MultiChoice said it had to absorb a R10.2 billion negative impact on its topline due to local currency depreciation against the US dollar.“Management acted decisively to ensure that the group could withstand these headwinds, focusing on key areas within its control,” it said.“This has meant maintaining a discipline of inflationary pricing, with price increases of ~5.7% in South Africa in FY25 (FY24: 5.6%) and an average of 31% in local currency in Rest of Africa (FY24: 27%).”MultiChoice said this enabled it to offset subscriber volume pressures and deliver 1% year-on-year organic revenue growth in the current financial year.“In addition, further efficiencies were implemented to manage costs and cash flows without unduly sacrificing the group’s customer value proposition,” it said.“In this regard, the group delivered R3.7 billion in cost savings, well ahead of management’s initial R2.0-billion target, and the revised R2.5 billion target set at its half-year results.”Despite these cost savings, MultiChoice reported that organic trading profit declined by 9% year-on-year across the group due to the increased operating costs in Showmax in its peak investment year.<img src="https://mybroadband.co.za/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/CanalPlus-MultiChoice-DStv-decline-FY22-FY25-1200x509.jpg">MultiChoice performance metrics in Canal+ investor presentation published on 21 November 2025In an investor presentation published on 21 November, Canal+ said that it has plans to return MultiChoice to growth through several key interventions.Canal+ said it would reinvest in subscriber acquisition to capture growth opportunity in the underpenetrated African pay-TV market.It will offset higher subscriber acquisition costs through synergies and a granular focus on optimal distribution.Canal+ said it would set ambitious growth targets and incentivise teams accordingly, applying a “no small market” philosophy for the continent.This means Canal+ will not view any market on the African continent as too small to invest in for future growth.Besides driving subscriber acquisition to increase revenue, Canal+ stated that it would develop and implement plans to generate meaningful incremental revenues and revenue synergies across the business.Additionally, Canal+ said it would enhance MultiChoice’s customer value proposition. It will strengthen the content line-up by sharing material across platforms and apply marketing best practices.Canal+ also said it would address the cost side of the business. It plans to reset the cost base for a sustainable and profitable pay-TV business, in contrast with past cost savings plans aimed solely at short-term profitability.It stated that it would deliver meaningful cost synergies, with an initial focus on content and technology costs, especially large cost items at a global scale.
