A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from stripping temporary protected status from up to 350,000 Haitians, a status that allows them to legally live and work in the United States amid the turmoil in their homeland.Judge Ana Reyes issued a temporary stay that prevents Kristi Noem, the US homeland security secretary, from implementing her decision to remove the status known as TPS, which was scheduled to expire on Tuesday.Reyes notes that Noem, in announcing her decision to revoke TPS for Haitians, referred to those seeking refuge in the US as “killers, leeches, or entitlement junkies”.She then notes that the plaintiffs who asked her to block the order, five Haitian TPS holders, “are not, it emerges, ‘killers, leeches, or entitlement junkies’”.“They are instead: Fritz Emmanuel Lesly Miot, a neuroscientist researching Alzheimer’s disease; Rudolph Civil, a software engineer at a national bank; Marlene Gail Noble, a laboratory assistant in a toxicology department; Marica Merline Laguerre, a college economics major; and Vilbrun Dorsainvil, a full-time registered nurse”, the judge added.Reyes said in an accompanying 83-page opinion that plaintiffs were likely to prevail on the merits of the case and that she found it “substantially likely” that Noem preordained her termination decision because of “hostility to nonwhite immigrants”.“During the stay, the Termination shall be null, void, and of no legal effect,” the judge said in her two-page order, adding that for now, the termination has no bearing on their ability to work and to be protected from detention and deportation.Temporary protected status can be granted by the homeland security secretary if conditions in home countries are deemed unsafe for return due to a natural disaster, political instability or other dangers. While it grants TPS holders the right to live and work in the US, it does not provide a legal pathway to citizenship.The Trump administration has aggressively sought to remove the protection, making more people eligible for deportation. Ghanaian Engineering Reconstruction team of the Ghana Armed Forces and the 1 Engineering Regiment of the Jamaican Defence Force (JDF) have recorded significant progress in rebuilding homes in Black River and Saint Elizabeth communities following the recent Hurricane that struck Jamaica. Following the disaster which occurred in October 2025, the government deployed 54 personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces‘ 14 Engineer Brigade, Engineer Contingent 1 to Jamaica to support national rebuilding efforts. Communities in these areas in Jamaica were severely hit by the Hurricane Melissa and are being steadily rebuilt. As part of Ghana’s humanitarian commitment, Ghana’s reconstruction team is working alongside international partners including the Jamaican Defence Force to rebuild homes and support livelihood of victims. The mission reflects solidarity, service and shared resilience. Leader of the Ghanaian Engineering Reconstruction team, Colonel Emmanuel Assiah met with Foreign Minister for Jamaica, Camina Johnson Smith upon the team’s arrival in Jamaica. Thirty years ago, long before running became a staple of urban life in Kingston, a small group of early-morning joggers at the Mona Dam unknowingly laid the foundation for what would become one of Jamaica’s most influential running organisations. They were simply a cluster of runners who stayed on the path longer than most, cooling down at dusk while talking about running shoes, mileage, and the big dream, tackling a marathon together one day.From those casual conversations came the idea of forming a club. A meeting was called, the decision was made and, by 1996, the newly formed Jamdammers Running Club was training for its first international marathon – the Marine Corps Marathon. The rest, as Dr Kemroy Johnson, current president, said, “is history”.A name rooted in Jamaica’s running culture, the club’s unique name is itself part of the lore. Since their home base was the Mona Dam, the earliest suggestion was ‘DamJammers’. Eventually, the group settled on a name that honoured the space that shaped them, while also reflecting national identity: Jam for Jamaica, and Dammers for the runners who began their journey circling the Mona Dam.Planting the seeds of road running in Jamaica long before running clubs and runners dotted Kingston’s roadways, Jamdammers was providing structure, weekly Saturday runs, mid-week group workouts, and the kind of social support that encouraged ordinary Jamaicans to lace up and join in.“We set the template for others to follow,” Johnson reflected. “We create a running space where people feel a sense of belonging, no matter your fitness level.”At the time, recreational running was rare. Road races were dominated by student-athletes or members of formal track clubs.“People who saw us running on the road thought we were crazy,” he said laughing. But today, early-morning runners and walkers are a common sight, part of a wellness culture that Jamdammers helped ignite.The club’s influence goes much deeper than physical training. The running club also maintains weekly Saturday morning community runs across Kingston, offering runners and walkers up to 10 miles of group training, and has hosted ‘Runners Unite’ events, welcoming all local running clubs.Beyond athletics, the club’s primary outreach focus has been its longstanding support for Special Olympics Jamaica, reinforcing its mission of inclusivity and service.The birth of the Reggae Marathon, a Jamaican original, one of Jamdammers’ boldest undertakings, came in 2000 when nearly 40 members travelled to the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon in San Diego. The course featured live music, including a reggae band, sparking an idea that would transform Jamaica’s running landscape.“That experience set off the momentum to up our game,” Johnson said.“We wanted to create a unique, world-class international event in the home of reggae.”With vision, innovation, and volunteer power, the Reggae Marathon was born. The Ministry of Food and Agriculture expects all 900 irrigation pumps seized from illegal mining sites to be in use on farms by Friday, following their distribution to nine regions. Legal mandate Ghana’s Data Protection Act (DPA) provides a foundation for protecting patient data, which is classified as “special personal data” due to its highly sensitive nature. The DPA mandates that anyone processing this data must do so lawfully and reasonably, "without infringing the privacy rights" of the patient. Crucially, the DPA's Lawfulness of Processing principle generally requires the prior consent of the data subject.While the law permits processing special data for “medical purposes” (diagnosis, care, research) when a health professional is involved and bound by a duty of confidentiality, this framework places a clear and immediate responsibility on both the former processor (LHIMS) and the new one (GHIMS) to maintain absolute confidentiality and apply stringent data security safeguards. Human cost LHIMS' refusal to hand over administrative access to the nation’s health data is more than a contractual dispute; it is a profound human rights issue. When hospitals across the country were logged out, the action constituted a direct denial of the patient’s fundamental right to health and, potentially, the right to life. Patient medical history is the bedrock of safe and effective care. The instant lack of access to this data, which includes critical information on past surgeries, chronic conditions, and medication regimens built up over years, forces healthcare providers to return to archaic folder systems and, worse, requires patients to attempt to "rebuild" their own medical history.Mitigating breach risk A key threat in the transition from LHIMS to GHIMS is the unauthorised retention or use of patient data by the previous vendor, LHIMS. Patients have a Data Subject Right to request that a data controller destroy or delete personal data when it no longer has the authorisation to retain it. The use of this historical data by LHIMS for secondary purposes, such as research without consent, would violate the DPA's Specification of Purpose and Compatibility of Further Processing principles. LHIMS collected data for patient care management under a contract; At the end of the contract, any further use or retention of the records could be termed as an unauthorised infringement. The Data Protection Commission (DPC) must intervene to enforce the destruction or handover of these records.Comparing frameworks Ghana's Data Protection Act (DPA) shares essential elements with Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is the global benchmark for data rights. Both legal frameworks emphasise explicit consent for processing, especially for sensitive data; and strong data subject rights (access, rectification, and erasure). However, the LHIMS case clearly demonstrated the risks of external data hosting.While the GDPR imposes strict rules on Cross-Border Transfers, requiring an 'adequate level of protection,' LHIMS's foreign-hosted infrastructure exposed Ghana's data to jurisdiction risk. The DPA is robust in principle, but enforcement and resource allocation to the DPC in Ghana remain a challenge compared to Europe's highly funded regulatory bodies.Recommendations to fully secure patient data under the new GHIMS platform and prevent future lapses, the following actions are critical:• The Data Protection Commission (DPC) must immediately take strong action against LHIMS to compel the full, verified destruction or secure transfer of all patient data. • Government must enact a clear policy requiring all critical national health data to be hosted within Ghana’s geographical borders, under state-controlled infrastructure, to ensure true and permanent data sovereignty.• The Data Protection Commission (DPC) must be provided with adequate financial and human resources to effectively monitor and enforce compliance, conduct mandatory audits of GHIMS, and investigate data breaches promptly.• Launch a campaign to inform Ghanaians of their Data Subject Rights under the DPA, especially concerning their health records, and the straightforward process for filing complaints with the DPC.The move to GHIMS is an opportunity to reset the standard for digital health security in Ghana. We must ensure that the governing law is not just a promise but is robustly enforced to protect the privacy and confidentiality of every Ghanaian patient.

GHIMS vrs LHIMS: How is patient data being protected in the process?

The Acting Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, says the authority has proposed a 120 per cent rise in service tariffs. This, he said, is to help stop patients from paying out of pocket at hospitals. Speaking in a television interview with Channel One TV on Wednesday (Nov 27, 2025), Dr Bampoe said the proposal followed a detailed review by a group of experts. He added that the law requires the NHIA to review both service and medicine tariffs each year. The medicines review has been completed, and the service tariffs are now before the NHIA board. After the board’s consideration, the proposal will be sent to the Minister of Health for approval. He said the current tariffs are not realistic, which is why some patients are still asked to pay at hospitals. According to him, many service providers attribute the practice to low tariff levels. “One of the areas of concern… one point in my three-point vision is to make sure patients have a proper experience when they go to hospitals. In many hospitals that is not happening now because they are asked to pay out of pocket. Health providers tell us that we are not paying realistic tariffs, and that is why that is happening. We think that once we pay those tariffs, then there will be no excuse for the health providers to ask patients to put their money in their pockets,” he said. Dr Bampoe also spoke about the NHIA’s plan to move from a claims payment body to what he described as strategic health purchasing. He said this approach uses government funding to shape health outcomes and improve service delivery. “We are a spending entity. We are trying to move away from being a claims payment mechanism to a strategic health purchasing provider, which means we are able to dictate health outcomes because of the financial muscle that government provides us with. We are able to determine the prices of medicines, the prices of services and even go onto the global stage and give some kind of platform to discuss what kind of health outcomes we want,” he said. He said the proposed rise forms part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening universal health coverage and improving patients’ experience in the health system. “The National Health Insurance Scheme… is to pay claims. But now what we are looking at is getting universal health coverage for all Ghanaians. And universal health coverage has three pillars… population coverage, service coverage and financial protection… so that every Ghanaian living everywhere can access quality health care without financial hardship,” he said. Dr Bampoe said the rise will only take effect after approval by the NHIA board and the Minister of Health. He added that the aim is to maintain health services in a way that protects patients from out-of-pocket payments.

Antibiotics, also known as antimicrobials, are the medicines used to treat infections. Speaking at the Annual Research Meeting of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) on Tuesday [Nov 25, 2025],&nbsp;she said the resistance occurs when germs become so strong that the medicines meant to kill them no longer work. "This leads to treatment failures, prolonged illness and, in many cases, avoidable deaths," she said. The event was on the theme “Advancing Healthcare Through Impactful Research and Innovation.” She noted that many hospitals across the country are now battling infections that no longer respond to even the strongest antibiotics. “In many hospitals, doctors are moving from drug to drug, yet the patients still do not survive. Every delay in intervening represents a life lost, and this is happening in several hospitals on the continent,” she warned. <h3>Misuse </h3>Prof. Egyiri stated that the problem has been worsened by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, the ease with which people walk into pharmacies to buy them without prescriptions, and weak infection prevention and control systems in many health facilities. She added that the COVID-19 pandemic led to even more indiscriminate use of antibiotics, accelerating the resistance challenge. She further revealed that within African hospitals, several bacterial samples taken from patients are now resistant to nearly all available antibiotics including last-line treatment options that are usually reserved for the most severe infections. “In some of the cases we analysed, the bacteria were resistant to everything tested. This is extremely worrying,” she said. Another major concern, she said, is the region’s weak laboratory capacity. Only 1.3 per cent of laboratories in Africa are able to run the necessary tests to guide correct antibiotic use. “When we do not test, we are essentially flying blind,” she explained. <h3>Implementation </h3>Prof. Egyiri highlighted that although many African countries, including Ghana, have developed national action plans to tackle antibiotic resistance in line with the World Health Organization’s global strategy, implementation remains slow due to limited funding and inadequate enforcement of policies. <h3>Commitment </h3>The Director of Noguchi, Professor Dorothy Yeboah-Manu, also highlighted the Institute’s continued commitment to advancing Ghana’s biomedical research capacity. She praised the strong partnership between Ghana and Japan, stressing that ongoing exchange programmes, technical assistance and infrastructure development have significantly supported Noguchi’s growth. “We are very keen and happy about the deepening collaboration. We see new things emerging, and there is great potential for an improved partnership,” she said. Additionally, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Hiroshi Yoshimoto, reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting scientific advancement in the country and commended Noguchi for its leadership in disease surveillance and public health research. On his part, the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, also emphasized the indispensable role of research in international development and health security. It’s a part of him that spills into work.He’s been thinking about how the fates of his favorite rap legends mirror the grim health trends faced by Black men overall ever since he realized this was the year America would be celebrating five decades of hip-hop. And, as hip-hop’s 50th anniversary comes to a close, it ends with it a sobering reminder that Black men, including many rappers, face a life expectancy that’s among the lowest for any race and ethnicity group across the country,&nbsp;at 70 years old.&nbsp;When news broke in 2023 that Virginia-based rapper Magoo died at 50, it underscored the fragility around health and well-being for Black men. At the time, the hip-hop community was still in mourning over other deaths. DMX, dead at age 50. Biz Markie, 57. Coolio, just shy of 60. Heavy D, who collapsed outside his Beverly Hills home at age 44 due to a pulmonary embolism, or a blood clot in the lungs.&nbsp;Though death by gun violence and drug overdoses often make headlines, what’s missed are the ways Black men are disproportionately vulnerable to death due to cancer, heart disease, stroke and chronic conditions such as diabetes.“Premature death — often from chronic illnesses that can be prevented — is a reality for Black men whether or not hip-hop is in the room,” said Mark Anthony Neal, who chairs the Department of African &amp; African American Studies at Duke University.One might assume that high-profile rappers would have the money and means to tap into quality health care and preventive medicine. But the growing list of Black male rap stars who fail to live to old age shows their wealth does not exempt them from illness, and experts say the pressure they face as artists in the spotlight may exacerbate the health conditions among them.<h2>Racism, rap and risk</h2>Black Americans’ life expectancy is compromised not only by disease, but also in large part by the weathering effect of racism — a concept coined by public health researcher Arline T. Geronimus that the constant stress of living in a racist society wears down the body like a rock being worn down by the outdoor elements. Public health advocates say factors such as the lack of healthy food choices in Black neighborhoods and the lack of green spaces that encourage outdoor exercise lower the quality of life and increase daily stress.The history of medical racism that drives high rates of mistrust among Black folks can lead to delays in people seeking preventative care like screenings, which are key to early diagnosis and treatment. Add to that toxic masculinity, which encourages aggression, toughness and invincibility, and the ability of Black men to reach optimal health and well-being erodes.“It’s a gumbo mix of risk,” said Dr. Italo Brown, a clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine at Stanford University. For rappers, the health risks are compounded by what it means to create art in the public eye — the punishing schedule of appearances, marketing strategies that highlight gun violence and bragging rights, the 24/7 navigation of social media and the pressure of being slingshotted into the top 1% essentially overnight, he said. Exposure to vices and high risk behavior grows, leaving them even more vulnerable. Brown calls it hip-hop’s silent epidemic.&nbsp;“This is not by happenstance,” said Brown. The narrative that rappers are dying only due to violence and drugs is not what the data illustrates, he said. “It doesn’t explain the total risk that hip-hop artists face.”The business structure within hip-hop is not set up for protecting rap artists’ health, experts say.&nbsp;“With [record] labels, they’re essentially contract laborers. They don’t get health care. They don’t get retirement funds,” said Neal. “Why are we not talking about health plans for hip-hop artists? It shouldn’t surprise us that they are dying early,” he said.Neal, a New York native who was born and raised in the Bronx and now studies Black masculinity and pop culture, wonders if the language like “manning up” that hip-hop culture lifts up encourages Black men to endure pain and health issues while discouraging them to seek help. DMX, for example, known for his macho persona, said&nbsp;in a 2020 People’s Party interview&nbsp;with Talib Kweli, “I learned that I had to deal with the things that hurt me. I didn’t really have anybody to talk to … in the hood, nobody wants to hear that. Talking about your problems is viewed as a sign of weakness when actually it’s one of the bravest things you can do.”DMX struggled with addiction throughout his career and died of a cocaine-induced heart attack in 2021, at age 50. Neal would love to see hip-hop culture embrace the idea of artists going to the doctor and seeking support on a regular basis. “Part of hip-hop is this idea that we are invincible. We’re not.”Neal remembers Jay-Z’s&nbsp;4:44&nbsp;album, in which he raps, “my therapist said I relapsed,” and subsequent interviews in 2017 where the rap star revealed how therapy was helping him process a lifetime of suppressed emotions that led him to maintain a hard masculine shell.&nbsp;In a podcast interview&nbsp;on Tidal’s Rap Radar that spring, Jay-Z talked more about wellness in the music industry. “We have to watch our health, our physical health and what we’re doing with our bodies, but also our mental health. A lot of people are going through trauma,” he said. “And you’re too embarrassed to get help for it, especially in these neighborhoods where we grew up.”The headlines that ran after the album’s shed light on the battles that run parallel to what it means to be a Black man in America and how it can disrupt their mental health.&nbsp;“Jay-Z Opened Up About Therapy and Masculinity,”&nbsp;Teen Vogue wrote.&nbsp;Bustle said, “How JAY-Z’s ‘4:44’ May Help Destigmatize Mental Health”.&nbsp;In 2023, a group of hip-hop legends including Fat Joe, Rick Ross, Busta Rhymes, Method Man, French Montana, and Chuck D, joined together in&nbsp;a public service announcement&nbsp;that called for price transparency in health care by hospitals and insurance companies. And, artist Nasir “Nas” Jones&nbsp;launched the Paid In Full Foundation, aimed at providing financial support to hip-hop’s pioneers, which could support quality health care.<h2>Changing what you can</h2>A lot of forces make it difficult for Black men to effectively prioritize their health, said Griffith, from Georgetown. “The only way to understand that is to understand the conditions and context of the lives of Black men. It’s not enough to look at them as just men, and it’s not enough to look at them as just Black,” he said.It’s important for them to take action on what’s within their control, and not take on too much stress regarding what’s outside of their control, those crushingly large issues of systemic racism that lie outside the scope of individual choices, said Griffith, with Georgetown.“Black men don’t necessarily go to the doctor for preventative screening,” he said. He recommends folks prioritize routine checkup and blood work, as well as finding ways to celebrate without compromising health. That means limiting alcohol consumption and high sugar and salt diets.&nbsp;Rappers “are experiencing what so many Black men experience,” said Alford Young Jr., a sociology professor at the University of Michigan.&nbsp;When some of Young’s favorite rappers started dying, he started accepting that the early guard of the hip-hop generation had suddenly become the old generation. He hopes that the recent deaths help drive a conversation about Black men’s health. He never thought hip-hop could allow for discussions around health care and health disparities.&nbsp;“Maybe this moment will trigger Black men to think about what is going on,” he said. Grammy-winning rap duo Salt-N-Pepa have filed a notice of appeal against the dismissal of their lawsuit against&nbsp;Universal Music Group&nbsp;over the copyrights to their master recordings.The notice, filed on February 4 and docketed in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on February 5, challenges the January 8 ruling by District Judge Denise Cote that&nbsp;dismissed&nbsp;both of the duo’s claims against Universal.&nbsp;A judge ruled in January&nbsp;that the artists never owned the copyrights to their sound recordings and therefore cannot reclaim them.The filing, obtained by MBW, also appears to reveal that Salt-N-Pepa (Cheryl James and Sandra Denton) have added&nbsp;prominent music industry lawyer&nbsp;Richard S. (NITA) – a company owned by their producer Hurby Azor.That agreement stated that NITA “shall be the sole and exclusive owner of any and all rights, title and/or interest in and to master recordings recorded hereunder, including but not limited to the worldwide sound copyrights therein.”On the same day, Azor entered into a separate distribution agreement with Next Plateau Records – to which UMG is a successor-in-interest – that transferred ownership from NITA to Next Plateau.Salt-N-Pepa were not signatories to that distribution agreement, though they signed an “inducement letter” attached to it. The artists argued this letter – in which they agreed to “grant you all of the rights and remedies therein granted to you” – constituted their direct grant of rights to Next Plateau.Judge Cote disagreed.“Even viewed in the light most favorable to Plaintiffs, the 1986 agreements do not indicate that Plaintiffs ever owned the copyrights to the sound recordings or that they granted a transfer of those rights to anyone else,” the ruling stated.“The only copyright transfer effectuated by these agreements was the one from NITA to Next Plateau Records. And the statutory text in § 203 is clear: Plaintiffs can only terminate copyright transfers that they executed. The government of Zimbabwe has ordered all churches operating in residential areas to install soundproofing and has imposed an immediate ban on the establishment of new fuel service stations in housing zones as part of a nationwide crackdown on urban disturbances.Speaking at a press conference on land-use applications on Thursday, chief director of spatial planning and development in the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works Mr Shingirai Mushamba said the measures were aimed at regulating obtrusive developments in residential neighbourhoods.“All places of worship operating in residential areas must conduct services in enclosed, soundproofed buildings,” Mr Mushamba said.He said retail businesses would also be restricted to designated commercial nodes and barred from operating wholesale or distribution activities within residential areas.Further, fuel service stations would no longer be permitted in residential zones unless they form part of approved shopping centres.“Fuel stations must comply with statutory buffer requirements and include road widening or turning lanes to manage traffic,” he said.Local authorities have been directed to suspend all land-use change applications unless they carry written approval from the provincial planning officer.The ministry also made public notification mandatory, requiring councils to inform stakeholders of proposed land-use changes through billboards, social media platforms, official websites and local radio stations.Meanwhile, an expedited waiver process for land-use changes will take effect on February 10, 2026, as the Government reviews the national moratorium on change-of-use applications imposed in May 2025.Under the new system, developers will submit waiver applications directly to local councils instead of central ministry offices, shifting initial processing to the local level.To maintain oversight, councils will be required to submit weekly tables of applications received, which will be vetted by provincial deputy directors before being forwarded to the Permanent Secretary.Mr Mushamba said compliance would be monitored through mandatory quarterly reports, with enforcement supported by a whole-of-council approach involving the Zimbabwe Republic Police, where necessary.

The latest update could impact First Nations persons and Native Americans born in Canada."You may be able to cross the Canada-U.S. border by land or water with your Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS), also known as a secure status card,"&nbsp;reads the update. "However, the acceptance of all status cards is entirely at the discretion of U.S. officials."It's also important to note that secure status cards aren't accepted travel documents for air travel. US film stars Meagan Good and Jonathan Majors become Guinea citizens after DNA tests

The Ilyushin Il-76, operated by the Russian government-affiliated airline Aviacon Zitotrans, made several stops on its way to Cuba, including in the Dominican Republic, Mauritania, and Algeria, after departing from St. Petersburg by way of Sochi, Russia, in late January. It landed at the San Antonio de los Baños Air Base in Cuba, about 50 kilometers south of Havana, on Sunday evening local time.The same aircraft, registered RA-78765, flew to Venezuela, Nicaragua, and&nbsp;Cuba&nbsp;in late October 2025 amid brewing tensions between Caracas and Washington. After the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela on Jan. 3, Cuba has increasingly found itself in the crosshairs of U.S. President Donald Trump. The pressure intensified on Jan. 29, when Trump issued an executive order declaring Cuba a “national emergency” and imposing tariffs on any country supplying Cuba with oil unless Havana aligns with U.S. national security and foreign policy.An Il-76 can transport up to 50 tons of cargo or up to 200 people. Aircraft of this type are known to have delivered small arms, military supplies and even mercenaries on Russia’s behalf in the past. Aviacon Zitotrans is well-documented as flying military cargo and has been sanctioned by multiple countries for these activities. The U.S., Canada and Ukraine have all sanctioned the company for its role in supporting Russia’s military adventures.“Aviacon Zitotrans has shipped military equipment such as rockets, warheads, and helicopter parts all over the world,” the U.S. Treasury Department&nbsp;said&nbsp;in January 2023, when it added the company to the American sanctions list. “Aviacon Zitotrans has shipped defense materiel to Venezuela, Africa, and other locations,” the agency continued. It has also been involved in exporting Russian-made weapons to buyers globally for the state-owned company Rosoboronexport.It is unclear what cargo the aircraft is carrying on its current journey. When the same aircraft flew to Venezuela in advance of the U.S. strikes, it delivered Pantsir-S1 short-range and Buk-M2E medium-range air defense systems to Caracas,&nbsp;according to&nbsp;Russian lawmaker Alexei Zhuravlev and Russian state-owned&nbsp;media. Russian cargo plane arrives in Cuba, echoing frantic Caracas buildup

Dozens of members of the Ming family were sentenced in SeptemberNo-one should be surprised that China has&nbsp;swiftly executed the 11 members&nbsp;of an organised crime family from north-eastern Myanmar who were sentenced to death in September.China executes more people than anywhere else in the world, according to human rights groups – the exact figure is a state secret. Officials are often executed for corruption. The accusations made against the Ming family were far more serious.The Ming, Bau, Wei and Liu clans have dominated the remote border town of Laukkaing in Myanmar's impoverished Shan state, since 2009.They rose to power after General Min Aung Hlaing, the current coup leader in Myanmar, led a military operation to drive out the MNDAA, the ethnic insurgent army which had dominated Laukkaing and the area around it since the 1980s.The four families, as they became known, took over and began shifting from the old dependence on opium and methamphetamine production to a new economy based on casinos and, eventually, online fraud.Ming Zhenzhen and Ming Guoping in the custody of Chinese policeThey remained close to the Myanmar military; in December 2021, after seizing power in his coup, Min Aung Hlaing feted Liu Zhengxiang, patriarch of the Liu clan, in the capital Nay Pyi Taw and awarded him an honorary title for "extraordinary contributions to state development".His Fully Light conglomerate had lucrative businesses all over Myanmar. Other members of the four families were candidates for the military-backed party the USDP.The scam compounds they ran in Laukkaing, though, were brutal, much more so than scam complexes in other parts of Asia. Torture was routine.Tens of thousands of mainly Chinese workers were lured there with promises of well-paid jobs, only to find themselves imprisoned in the compounds. They were forced to run elaborate&nbsp;"pig-butchering" scams, where most of the victims were also Chinese. Complaints from the victims, and by the families of those trapped in the compounds multiplied on social media.The most notorious compound in Laukkaing was called Crouching Tiger Villa, run by the Ming family. In October 2023, during what is believed to have been an escape attempt, the guards killed several Chinese nationals. The Chinese authorities felt compelled to take action.With China's apparent blessing the MNDAA and its allies attacked and recaptured Laukkaing, as part of their offensive against the Myanmar army in the ongoing civil war. The MNDAA vowed to stamp out the scam business completely.They detained the heads of the four families and handed more than 60 of their relatives and associates to the Chinese police. Ming Xuechang, the family patriarch, or warlord, killed himself after being captured, authoritShe Zhijiang, who is accused of building an illicit gambling empire in South East Asia, was extradited to China last yearDuring interrogations by the Chinese police one of the family members is reported to have admitted killing someone chosen at random just to demonstrate his strength.These details have been publicised by China to justify its tough treatment of the families. Five of the Bau family are also awaiting execution, while the trials of the Wei and Liu families have not yet concluded.The four families are ethnic Chinese, and had close ties to the authorities on the Chinese side of the border in Yunnan. Their abuses were too close to home for China, and the action against the scam business in Laukkaing has been the most decisive yet.China has also prevailed on Thailand and Cambodia to extradite two Chinese business figures accused of running scam empires, She Zhijiang, who built an entire city in Myanmar's war-torn Karen State, and Chen Zhi, who amassed wealth and power with his Prince Group conglomerate in Cambodia. The Chinese government has also brought tens of thousands of its citizens who were working in scam compounds back to China to face trial.The scam business, though, has simply adapted and evolved. It is still thought to be by far the biggest business in Cambodia, despite pressure from China and the US on the government there to shut it down.And it has kept moving to new areas in Myanmar, even as the more prominent scam complexes like KK Park and Shwe Kokko, on the Thai-Myanmar border, have been forced to close down.

Why China moved so quickly to execute 11 members of a notorious mafia family

One autumn day in 1786, an unexpected parcel arrived at Carlton House, the London residence of George, Prince of Wales. The sender was Quobna Ottobah Cugoano, a free Black man living in London, one of roughly 4,000 people of African descent in the city at the time. Inside the package were pamphlets describing the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade and the brutal treatment of enslaved people in Britain’s Caribbean colonies. The accompanying letter, signed “John Stuart”, Cugoano’s alias, urged the heir to the British throne to read the “little tracts” enclosed and to “consider the case of the poor Africans who are most barbarously captured and unlawfully carried away from their own country”.Africans, Cugoano warned, were treated “in a more unjust and inhuman manner than ever known among any of the barbarous nations in the world”.At the time, Cugoano was employed as a domestic servant by the fashionable painters Maria and Richard Cosway, whose home stood just two blocks from Carlton House. Richard Cosway had recently been appointed principal painter to the Prince of Wales, and his residence at Schomberg House on Pall Mall had become a gathering place for artists, aristocrats and politicians. Weekly salons and concerts drew members of the highest society – events sanctioned by the prince himself. Through this employment, Cugoano gained something rare for a former enslaved man: regular, direct proximity to Britain’s elite and to the royal family.Scale of monarchy’s role in slave trade revealed in new bookRead moreSchomberg House was a monument to social ambition. Its grand drawing rooms opened on to gardens that stretched almost to the edge of Carlton House’s own grounds. Cosway, newly elevated by royal favour, filled his home with lavish furnishings and dressed his Black servant in flamboyant bespoke livery – crimson silk or velvet trimmed with lace and gold buttons. In Georgian Britain, Black servants were fashionable accessories, visible symbols of wealth and imperial reach. Kings, princes, admirals and aristocrats employed them. In portraits of elite families, Black attendants hovered at the margins, holding trays, opening doors, silent witnesses to English life.Cugoano, however, was not silent.Born around 1757 in a Fante village on the coast of what is now Ghana, Gugoano had his childhood ended abruptly when slave traders raided his community. At 13, he was kidnapped, marched in chains to the coast, and forced onboard a slave ship. He later described the Atlantic crossing as a passage of terror, a “state of horror and slavery”. The ship delivered him to Grenada, where he was sold and forced to labour in a plantation slave gang.Ottobah Cugoano. Composite: AlamyAfter nearly two years, his enslaver brought him to England in late 1772 – just months after Lord Mansfield’s famous ruling in the Somerset case, which declared that enslavers could not forcibly remove enslaved people from England. Though narrow in legal scope, the decision sent shockwaves across Britain. Many believed, mistakenly but hopefully, that touching English soil meant freedom.Cugoano soon claimed his liberty. Whether he fled or was cast out is unclear, but freedom in London was precarious. Formerly enslaved people were vulnerable to kidnapping and resale. On the advice of “some good people”, Cugoano was baptised at St James’s Church, Piccadilly, adopting the name John Stuart so that he “might not be carried away and sold again”. An Anglo-Christian name did not guarantee safety, but it offered camouflage.Over the next decade, Cugoano learned to read and write, became a devout Anglican, and embedded himself in London’s small but vibrant free Black community. By the mid-1780s, he had joined a group of Black activists calling themselves the Sons of Africa – former enslaved men, sailors and Black loyalists who had supported Britain and George III during the American Revolutionary War. Together, they wrote letters, published pamphlets, lobbied MPs and challenged the illegal seizure of free Black people in Britain.One such intervention saved a man named Harry Demaine, who had been recaptured by a Jamaican planter and dragged onboard a ship bound for the Caribbean. Acting swiftly, Cugoano and another Son of Africa alerted the abolitionist lawyer Granville Sharp, who secured Demaine’s release just minutes before the ship sailed. Demaine later said that he had planned to jump into the sea rather than be returned to slavery.These were acts of resistance carried out in the shadow of royal power.Cugoano understood that abolishing the slave trade would require more than rescue missions. It would require the support – or at least the acquiescence – of the monarchy. For generations, enslaved people across the British empire had petitioned the king, believing him to be a distant source of justice, capable of overriding colonial cruelty. Abolitionists, too, recognised the symbolic power of royal endorsement.From his post at Schomberg House, Cugoano watched the Prince of Wales up close. He observed his vanity, his appetite for praise, his obsession with legacy. And so, when Cugoano finally wrote to him, he tailored his appeal accordingly.If the prince used his future power to end the “iniquitous traffic of buying and selling men”, Cugoano promised, his name would “resound with applause from shore to shore” and be held “in the highest esteem throughout the annals of time”. It was the first anti-slavery treatise written by a formerly enslaved African in Britain. He reminded the prince that enslaved Africans had no ambassadors, no formal representatives. Their only hope was to “lay our case at the feet of your Highness”.The Prince of Wales kept the book, and it still sits in the royal collection. He did nothing else.Cugoano also sent his book to George III, adopting a different strategy. To the king – head of the Church of England – he appealed to Christian duty and moral responsibility. Justice and humanity, he wrote, were the motives behind his work, and surely a sovereign would be pleased to support the natural liberties of men.Yet Cugoano’s book did not flatter monarchy. It indicted it.For centuries, he argued, European kings had sanctioned, defended and profited from the buying and selling of African captives. In Britain, the transatlantic slave trade had not emerged accidentally or at the margins of power. It was formally established by royal authority when Charles II granted a monopoly charter to the Royal African Company. Successive monarchs and their families benefited from that investment in slaving. To claim royal innocence now, Cugoano insisted, was a fiction.The king and his relations occupied the most exalted position in British society. Yet as the descendants and beneficiaries of England’s first major investors in the slave trade, George III and the royal family set a corrupt example for the nation to follow. Enslavers routinely denied religious instruction to the people they claimed to civilise. Plantation slavery was not benevolent guardianship but a regime of terror. If kings and nations possessed the power to prevent such injustice and refused to act, how could they expect God’s favour – or escape his judgment?This was no polite appeal. It was a warning.The British government, Cugoano wrote, continued to “traffic in the human species”, a crime “established by royal authority” and still supported and carried on by a Christian government.Responsibility did not rest solely with slave traders or planters but with the nation as a whole – and most heavily with its sovereign. Kings and “great men”, he argued, were “more particularly guilty”.Unless George III intervened to end Britain’s slave trade, he said, divine retribution would follow.White abolitionists carefully avoided such language. They courted royal goodwill, emphasising mercy rather than blame. Cugoano refused. He had no intention of holding back his disgust for the British people and the sovereign who had profited from his enslavement and ignored the ongoing anguish and death of countless Africans. Cugoano demanded immediate abolition, universal emancipation, and the political inclusion of Black people as free subjects – positions most Britons, abolitionist or not, considered dangerously radical.“But why,” he asked, “should total abolition, and an universal emancipation of slaves, and the enfranchisement of all the Black people employed in the culture of the colonies taking place as it ought to do, and without any hesitation, or delay for a moment, even though it might have some seeming appearance of loss either to government or to individuals, be feared at all?”Few listened, and Cugoano’s book initially attracted little attention. Yet his ideas did not disappear.By 1791, an abridged edition gained influential subscribers – artists, aristocrats, politicians. The movement he helped build gathered force. Former Black Stars coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has revealed that he would actively encourage his sons to represent Ghana at the senior level if the opportunity arises.Akonnor’s elder son, Charles Jesaja Herrmann, 25, recently joined German lower-division side FC Bocholt, while his younger son, Charles Kwablan Herrmann, has signed with Belgian top-flight club Cercle Brugge.In an interview with Graphic Sports, Akonnor described his younger son’s move to Belgium as a key milestone in his career and said he played a hands-on role in facilitating the transfer.Acknowledging that both sons were born and raised in Germany, Akonnor admitted their connection to Ghana was limited. The Fifa Prioritised Appointment Scheduling System (Fifa Pass), announced by US President Donald Trump in November, went live this week. It helps fans from countries whose teams have qualified to get visa appointments faster. The US State Department stressed that a Fifa Pass does not guarantee a visa. All applicants must still pass security checks and meet visa requirements. Fans from countries in the US visa waiver program, including much of Europe, the UK, Japan, and Australia, do not need a Fifa Pass. They can travel using an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) for up to 90 days. A senior State Department official said the new system reduces wait times, with applicants in over 80% of countries able to schedule appointments in less than 60 days. At the visa interview, applicants must show they qualify for a visa and plan to follow US laws during their stay. Impact of immigrant visa suspensions The US recently paused immigrant visa processing from 75 countries, including 15 whose teams have qualified for the World Cup, such as Brazil. Seven other countries on the list could still qualify. The State Department confirmed the pause does not affect non-immigrant visas, which cover tourists, athletes, families, and media professionals. TECNO Brought Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) 2025 To Life

Like millions of football fans who descended on Morocco for the African Cup of Nations final here in Rabat, and hundreds of millions more who watched globally, this has been an amazing tournament.&nbsp;The football infrastructure here has been absolutely worldclass. The quality, efficiency, and cost of the trains services are as good as, if not better than some of the best in the world. Moroccan hospitality before, during and after the tournament has been exceptional.&nbsp;Significant improvements though still need to be made in the overall quality of hotels and customer service, more so ahead of the soon-to-be jointly hosted 2030 #FIFAWorldCup to be held in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. I am confident Morocco will pull it off.For now, here are 12 takeaways, based on my up-close observations.1. #SENEGAL: While understandably frustrated by very poor officiating, walking off the pitch in protest risked match abandonment and damaged Africa’s global football image. It was a terrible call by the Senegalese coach that did not honor host country Morocco, the continent, #CAF or #FIFA. Thank God that #SadioMane had the presence of mind to stand his ground and convince his Senegalese teammates to return to the field and fight as men.2. #MOROCCO: Ahead of all CAF and FIFA sanctioned football events, Morocco must prioritize a more robust stadium security system to contain fan anger and prevent escalations from erupting into full blown riots when decisions go against the home team.&nbsp;It was unacceptable to see Moroccan stadium officials and players (Hakimi and others included) deliberately throw away the towel of the Senegalese goalkeeper (which is needed to wipe down gloves during play). The same antic was used against Nigeria, including a racist slur by a Moroccan fan who threw a banana at Nigerian goalkeeper #Nwabali.&nbsp;These antics were juvenile, unnecessary, and highly provocative.&nbsp;It really took a shine off of the exceptional and kind hospitality that Moroccans always go out of their way to extend to foreigners. (Topic for another time).3. #CAF: Africa’s apex football association, must enhance referee and VAR training to minimize controversial calls in high-stakes moments, and to reduce the likelihood of prolonged disputes and delays. In several of the tournament’s matches, the level of officiating fell well below acceptable international standards.&nbsp;Poor officiating in several matches undermined the credibility of the tournament..Calls were made that should not have been made. Calls were also not made that should have been made.&nbsp;Consequently, the media and fans were justified in their allegations or suspicions of official collusion favoring one team over the other.&nbsp;Whether true or not, is not the issue. Sometimes, perception is reality!4. #FIFA: should develop clear international protocols for handling team walk-offs, including immediate sanctions to Federations, coaches, and players, to deter similar actions in future tournaments.5. #SENEGAL: And every other country for that matter, needs a mature level-headed player in the mold of #SadioMane to de-escalate tensions swiftly. Thanks to his leadership, sanity prevailed, a full-blown crisis was avoided, the game resumed, and victory was secured.6. #MOROCCO: And all other countries, should avoid high-risk penalty techniques like the Panenka in pressure situations, unless the taker is mentally prepared, as Diaz’s tame effort proved costly. The same seemingly laissez faire approach decisively cost #Nigeria its Semi Final match against Morocco when #Chukwueze gifted the Moroccan goalkeeper.&nbsp;7. #CAF: Implement stricter time limits for VAR reviews to avoid extending stoppage time excessively (e.g. 24 minutes), which fueled frustration and chaos.8. #FIFA: Promote cross-confederation education on sportsmanship to counter perceptions of African football as chaotic, and to ensure fair play overrides national biases.9. #MOROCCO: As AFCON hosts, and ahead of the 2030 World Cup, consider this a test-run and invest in enhanced crowd management strategies, including riot police readiness, to safeguard players, officials and fans, during heated matches.10. #SENEGAL: Protesting soft penalties can backfire. The 16-20 minute delay highlighted poor sportsmanship. Any other referee could have called for a forfeit of the match in favor of Morocco, which would only have added to the shameful drama.11. #CAF: Enforce post-match reviews of referee decisions to build trust, and address complaints like Senegal’s disallowed goal that preceded the penalty drama.12. #FIFA: Monitor and advise tournament organizers especially in politically charged situations (for example in matches involving arch rivals Morocco and Algeria) and to prevent external factors, including excessive fan nationalism from escalating on-field disputes.By Victor Oladokun, Senior Advisor to Dr Akinwumi Adesina.

Mohamed Salah scored and Egypt eliminated defending champion Ivory Coast to move into the Africa Cup of Nations semifinals after a 3-2 victory on Saturday. Salah nabbed his fourth goal of the tournament — Egypt’s third of the game — in the 52nd minute and the Pharaohs needed it as Ivory Coast threatened to come back twice from two goals down. But Egypt held on in Agadir despite relentless Ivorian pressure and booked a semifinal date with 2021 champion Senegal in Tangier on Wednesday. Ivory Coast had a woeful start as Franck Kessie lost the ball in midfield after a poor touch and Odilon Kossounou fell over instead of cutting out Emam Ashour’s ball for Omar Marmoush, who scored in the fourth minute. Ramy Rabia produced a brilliant block to preserve the lead then scored himself with a header from a corner in the 32nd. Ivory Coast finally pulled one back in the 40th when Egypt defender Ahmed Fotouh bundled in a dangerous Yan Diomande free kick that Kossounou headed on. Salah restored Egypt’s two-goal cushion early in the second half when Rabia caught the Ivorian defense out with a long ball for Ashour, who set up Salah with the outside of his boot. Guéla Doué pulled one back again with his heel in a goalmouth scramble after goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy clawed the ball away in the 73rd, but the Elephants' equalizer never came. Egypt is bidding for a record-extending eighth title. Super Eagles fly again Victor Osimhen scored one goal and set up another for Nigeria to down Algeria 2-0 for its place in the semifinals. The Super Eagles needed patience in Marrakech against the team with the best defense in the tournament after failing to take their chances in the first half — Akor Adams fired over when he had only Luca Zidane in the Algeria goal to beat, and Calvin Bassey had another effort cleared off the line. Osimhen finally scored after the break when he headed the ball back across Zidane’s direction of movement from Bruno Onyemaechi’s cross. It was the first goal at the tournament conceded by Zidane. But it was quickly followed by the second. Patient buildup play preceded Alex Iwobi’s pass to Osimhen, who unselfishly played across for Adams, who eluded the out-rushing Zidane and poked the ball into the empty net in the 57th. Three-time champion Nigeria, which lost the final to Ivory Coast in the last edition, is bidding to win the title for the first time since 2013. It would help make up for the disappointment of failing to qualify for the World Cup — in contrast to Algeria. Programs under discussion include technical training in both onshore and offshore hydrocarbon operations, alongside executive-level capacity building aimed at strengthening operational and regulatory expertise across African energy markets.Venezuela’s decades of experience in complex onshore heavy-oil production and offshore development present relevant case studies for African producers expanding their own resource bases. The Chamber committed to facilitating frameworks that support long-term training exchanges and institutional collaboration. By prioritizing technical depth and executive-level capacity building, the partnership aims to ensure that resource development is matched by domestic expertise – reinforcing local content objectives across African energy markets.“This working visit demonstrates that Africa and Venezuela are aligned not only in resources, but in vision,” said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the AEC. “Energy poverty remains one of the greatest barriers to economic growth across the Global South. The Egyptian Parliament says it’s working on legislation to regulate children’s exposure to what it called the “digital chaos” of social media. On Saturday, President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi urged MPs to pass a law limiting young people’s use of social media “until they reach an age when they can handle it properly.” The president's televised comments urged his government to look at other countries including Australia and the United Kingdom that are working on legislations to “restrict or ban” children from social media. Legislators will consult with the government and expert bodies to draft a law to protect Egyptian children from any risks that threaten their thought and behavior, the House of Representatives said in a statement late on Sunday. About 50 percent of children under 18 in Egypt use social media platforms where they are likely exposed to harmful content, cyberbullying and abuse, according to a 2024 report. In December, Australia became the first country to ban social media for children under 16. The move triggered fraught debates about technology use, privacy, child safety and mental health and has prompted other countries to consider similar measures. The British government said it will consider banning young teenagers from social media while tightening laws designed to protect children from harmful content and excessive screen time. French President Emmanuel Macron urged his government to fast-track the legal process to ensure a social media ban for children under 15 can be enforced at the start of the next school year in September.

The Government of Ghana has officially changed the name of&nbsp;Kotoka International Airport&nbsp;back to Accra International Airport.‎In a statement issued by the Ministry, the government explained that the airport was originally known as Accra International Airport before it was later renamed.&nbsp;The Ministry said it is appropriate to restore the airport to its former and internationally recognised name.‎According to the statement, the change of name will not affect airport operations, safety standards, or international travel arrangements. Speaking to journalists last Thursday after bilateral meetings held on the sidelines of the 39th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Minister described visa waiver agreements as a top priority. He hinted at major announcements beginning in March and continuing through April and May.“You know that visa waiver agreements remain my priority as Foreign Minister. I expect more visa waiver agreements this year. Even within the month of March, you’ll be hearing some good news,” he stated.Mr Ablakwa expressed confidence that Ghana is on course to have one of the most valuable passports in Africa and globally. He pointed to significant upgrades, noting that the Ghanaian passport now features fully chip-embedded technology and advanced security systems, alongside expanded travel access.“It’s now probably the most secure in terms of the security features we have. It’s fully chip-embedded, and we are ahead of so many countries,” he said.The Minister also assured that the government has strengthened measures to prevent the fraudulent acquisition of passports. According to him, artificial intelligence tools and modern technology have been deployed to outpace criminal networks.On affordability, Mr Ablakwa recalled the recent 30 per cent reduction in passport fees, stressing that passports should not be treated as luxury items.“For Ghanaians to have passports, it is a right. Passports should not be a luxury. It’s our national pride. DStv operator MultiChoice has lost 2.8 million subscribers since its height on 31 March 2023, declining from 17.3 million to 14.5 million, a reduction of over 16% in two years.MultiChoice’s new owner, French media conglomerate Groupe Canal+, recently published an investor presentation with charts illustrating MultiChoice’s decline in recent years.It showed that MultiChoice was not only declining in subscriber numbers but also in other key metrics, such as revenue and trading profit.MultiChoice’s decline has been evident in South Africa since 2016, when the company started losing its highest-value DStv Premium subscribers.That was the same year as Netflix’s global expansion. The company announced the global rollout of its services in January 2016 at CES.South Africa’s pay-TV giant was able to mask this decline through gains on its lower-tier packages and growth in the rest of Africa.When MultiChoice was spun out of Naspers in 2019, it started bundling Compact Plus subscribers in with DStv Premium, in a new “Premium market segment” category.This hid the decline of DStv Premium for a year before this new combined category also started recording lower numbers.
