Ghanaian Engineering Reconstruction team of the Ghana Armed Forces and the 1 Engineering Regiment of the Jamaican Defence Force (JDF) have recorded significant progress in rebuilding homes in Black River and Saint Elizabeth communities following the recent Hurricane that struck Jamaica. Following the disaster which occurred in October 2025, the government deployed 54 personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces‘ 14 Engineer Brigade, Engineer Contingent 1 to Jamaica to support national rebuilding efforts. Communities in these areas in Jamaica were severely hit by the Hurricane Melissa and are being steadily rebuilt. As part of Ghana’s humanitarian commitment, Ghana’s reconstruction team is working alongside international partners including the Jamaican Defence Force to rebuild homes and support livelihood of victims. The mission reflects solidarity, service and shared resilience. Thirty years ago, long before running became a staple of urban life in Kingston, a small group of early-morning joggers at the Mona Dam unknowingly laid the foundation for what would become one of Jamaica’s most influential running organisations. They were simply a cluster of runners who stayed on the path longer than most, cooling down at dusk while talking about running shoes, mileage, and the big dream, tackling a marathon together one day.From those casual conversations came the idea of forming a club. A meeting was called, the decision was made and, by 1996, the newly formed Jamdammers Running Club was training for its first international marathon – the Marine Corps Marathon. The rest, as Dr Kemroy Johnson, current president, said, “is history”.A name rooted in Jamaica’s running culture, the club’s unique name is itself part of the lore. Since their home base was the Mona Dam, the earliest suggestion was ‘DamJammers’. Eventually, the group settled on a name that honoured the space that shaped them, while also reflecting national identity: Jam for Jamaica, and Dammers for the runners who began their journey circling the Mona Dam.Planting the seeds of road running in Jamaica long before running clubs and runners dotted Kingston’s roadways, Jamdammers was providing structure, weekly Saturday runs, mid-week group workouts, and the kind of social support that encouraged ordinary Jamaicans to lace up and join in.“We set the template for others to follow,” Johnson reflected. “We create a running space where people feel a sense of belonging, no matter your fitness level.”At the time, recreational running was rare. Road races were dominated by student-athletes or members of formal track clubs.“People who saw us running on the road thought we were crazy,” he said laughing. The running club also maintains weekly Saturday morning community runs across Kingston, offering runners and walkers up to 10 miles of group training, and has hosted ‘Runners Unite’ events, welcoming all local running clubs.Beyond athletics, the club’s primary outreach focus has been its longstanding support for Special Olympics Jamaica, reinforcing its mission of inclusivity and service.The birth of the Reggae Marathon, a Jamaican original, one of Jamdammers’ boldest undertakings, came in 2000 when nearly 40 members travelled to the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon in San Diego. The course featured live music, including a reggae band, sparking an idea that would transform Jamaica’s running landscape.“That experience set off the momentum to up our game,” Johnson said.“We wanted to create a unique, world-class international event in the home of reggae.”With vision, innovation, and volunteer power, the Reggae Marathon was born. The information we have is that his visa was revoked. Ghana Institute of Architects urged to reorient its role towards national development

ACCRA, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Ghanaian government said on Wednesday that it had made an additional payment of 709 million U.S. dollars to settle part of its Eurobond debts, bringing the total payments to Eurobond holders under the restructuring memorandum in 2025 alone to 1.4 billion dollars.According to a statement by the Ministry of Finance, the settlement took place on Tuesday, marking another major achievement in the country's economic recovery and debt management efforts.Earlier this year, the West African country made two-tranche payments of 349.52 million dollars each in January and July."The timely settlement reaffirms Ghana's credibility as a sovereign borrower and underscores the government's commitment to restoring investor confidence through transparent, predictable, and disciplined debt-service practices," the statement added.The statement emphasized that the government promises to improve how it mobilizes revenue, manages public finances, and handles public debt to better support its ability to pay off debts and fund Ghana's development plans.Debt restructuring was a critical condition in Ghana's economic reform program, which began in May 2023 with the support of a 3-billion-dollar loan from the International Monetary Fund.

"I definitely wouldn't just bet on Nvidia," Adam Coons, chief investment officer at Winthrop Capital Management, told Yahoo Finance's Opening Bid. "We kind of like to barbell this with something like the big hyperscaler, like an Alphabet Google, because that's really the type of name that you could probably have a little bit more comfort in because the AI story is just benefitting an already existing business model that was doing well." "Down the chain, we like the things that overall the AI story will help prop up," Coons said. "For us, it's cybersecurity [as it] becomes more and more important." The Ministry of Food and Agriculture expects all 900 irrigation pumps seized from illegal mining sites to be in use on farms by Friday, following their distribution to nine regions. Legal mandate Ghana’s Data Protection Act (DPA) provides a foundation for protecting patient data, which is classified as “special personal data” due to its highly sensitive nature. The DPA mandates that anyone processing this data must do so lawfully and reasonably, "without infringing the privacy rights" of the patient. Crucially, the DPA's Lawfulness of Processing principle generally requires the prior consent of the data subject.While the law permits processing special data for “medical purposes” (diagnosis, care, research) when a health professional is involved and bound by a duty of confidentiality, this framework places a clear and immediate responsibility on both the former processor (LHIMS) and the new one (GHIMS) to maintain absolute confidentiality and apply stringent data security safeguards. Human cost LHIMS' refusal to hand over administrative access to the nation’s health data is more than a contractual dispute; it is a profound human rights issue. When hospitals across the country were logged out, the action constituted a direct denial of the patient’s fundamental right to health and, potentially, the right to life. Patient medical history is the bedrock of safe and effective care. The instant lack of access to this data, which includes critical information on past surgeries, chronic conditions, and medication regimens built up over years, forces healthcare providers to return to archaic folder systems and, worse, requires patients to attempt to "rebuild" their own medical history.Mitigating breach risk A key threat in the transition from LHIMS to GHIMS is the unauthorised retention or use of patient data by the previous vendor, LHIMS. Patients have a Data Subject Right to request that a data controller destroy or delete personal data when it no longer has the authorisation to retain it. The use of this historical data by LHIMS for secondary purposes, such as research without consent, would violate the DPA's Specification of Purpose and Compatibility of Further Processing principles. LHIMS collected data for patient care management under a contract; At the end of the contract, any further use or retention of the records could be termed as an unauthorised infringement. The Data Protection Commission (DPC) must intervene to enforce the destruction or handover of these records.Comparing frameworks Ghana's Data Protection Act (DPA) shares essential elements with Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is the global benchmark for data rights. Both legal frameworks emphasise explicit consent for processing, especially for sensitive data; and strong data subject rights (access, rectification, and erasure). However, the LHIMS case clearly demonstrated the risks of external data hosting.While the GDPR imposes strict rules on Cross-Border Transfers, requiring an 'adequate level of protection,' LHIMS's foreign-hosted infrastructure exposed Ghana's data to jurisdiction risk. The DPA is robust in principle, but enforcement and resource allocation to the DPC in Ghana remain a challenge compared to Europe's highly funded regulatory bodies.Recommendations to fully secure patient data under the new GHIMS platform and prevent future lapses, the following actions are critical:• The Data Protection Commission (DPC) must immediately take strong action against LHIMS to compel the full, verified destruction or secure transfer of all patient data. • Government must enact a clear policy requiring all critical national health data to be hosted within Ghana’s geographical borders, under state-controlled infrastructure, to ensure true and permanent data sovereignty.• The Data Protection Commission (DPC) must be provided with adequate financial and human resources to effectively monitor and enforce compliance, conduct mandatory audits of GHIMS, and investigate data breaches promptly.• Launch a campaign to inform Ghanaians of their Data Subject Rights under the DPA, especially concerning their health records, and the straightforward process for filing complaints with the DPC.The move to GHIMS is an opportunity to reset the standard for digital health security in Ghana. We must ensure that the governing law is not just a promise but is robustly enforced to protect the privacy and confidentiality of every Ghanaian patient.

GHIMS vrs LHIMS: How is patient data being protected in the process?

The Acting Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, says the authority has proposed a 120 per cent rise in service tariffs. This, he said, is to help stop patients from paying out of pocket at hospitals. Speaking in a television interview with Channel One TV on Wednesday (Nov 27, 2025), Dr Bampoe said the proposal followed a detailed review by a group of experts. He added that the law requires the NHIA to review both service and medicine tariffs each year. The medicines review has been completed, and the service tariffs are now before the NHIA board. After the board’s consideration, the proposal will be sent to the Minister of Health for approval. He said the current tariffs are not realistic, which is why some patients are still asked to pay at hospitals. According to him, many service providers attribute the practice to low tariff levels. “One of the areas of concern… one point in my three-point vision is to make sure patients have a proper experience when they go to hospitals. In many hospitals that is not happening now because they are asked to pay out of pocket. Health providers tell us that we are not paying realistic tariffs, and that is why that is happening. We think that once we pay those tariffs, then there will be no excuse for the health providers to ask patients to put their money in their pockets,” he said. Dr Bampoe also spoke about the NHIA’s plan to move from a claims payment body to what he described as strategic health purchasing. He said this approach uses government funding to shape health outcomes and improve service delivery. “We are a spending entity. We are trying to move away from being a claims payment mechanism to a strategic health purchasing provider, which means we are able to dictate health outcomes because of the financial muscle that government provides us with. We are able to determine the prices of medicines, the prices of services and even go onto the global stage and give some kind of platform to discuss what kind of health outcomes we want,” he said. He said the proposed rise forms part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening universal health coverage and improving patients’ experience in the health system. “The National Health Insurance Scheme… is to pay claims. But now what we are looking at is getting universal health coverage for all Ghanaians. And universal health coverage has three pillars… population coverage, service coverage and financial protection… so that every Ghanaian living everywhere can access quality health care without financial hardship,” he said. Dr Bampoe said the rise will only take effect after approval by the NHIA board and the Minister of Health. He added that the aim is to maintain health services in a way that protects patients from out-of-pocket payments.

Antibiotics, also known as antimicrobials, are the medicines used to treat infections. Speaking at the Annual Research Meeting of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) on Tuesday [Nov 25, 2025],&nbsp;she said the resistance occurs when germs become so strong that the medicines meant to kill them no longer work. "This leads to treatment failures, prolonged illness and, in many cases, avoidable deaths," she said. The event was on the theme “Advancing Healthcare Through Impactful Research and Innovation.” She noted that many hospitals across the country are now battling infections that no longer respond to even the strongest antibiotics. “In many hospitals, doctors are moving from drug to drug, yet the patients still do not survive. Every delay in intervening represents a life lost, and this is happening in several hospitals on the continent,” she warned. <h3>Misuse </h3>Prof. Egyiri stated that the problem has been worsened by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, the ease with which people walk into pharmacies to buy them without prescriptions, and weak infection prevention and control systems in many health facilities. She added that the COVID-19 pandemic led to even more indiscriminate use of antibiotics, accelerating the resistance challenge. She further revealed that within African hospitals, several bacterial samples taken from patients are now resistant to nearly all available antibiotics including last-line treatment options that are usually reserved for the most severe infections. “In some of the cases we analysed, the bacteria were resistant to everything tested. This is extremely worrying,” she said. Another major concern, she said, is the region’s weak laboratory capacity. Only 1.3 per cent of laboratories in Africa are able to run the necessary tests to guide correct antibiotic use. “When we do not test, we are essentially flying blind,” she explained. <h3>Implementation </h3>Prof. Egyiri highlighted that although many African countries, including Ghana, have developed national action plans to tackle antibiotic resistance in line with the World Health Organization’s global strategy, implementation remains slow due to limited funding and inadequate enforcement of policies. <h3>Commitment </h3>The Director of Noguchi, Professor Dorothy Yeboah-Manu, also highlighted the Institute’s continued commitment to advancing Ghana’s biomedical research capacity. She said Noguchi’s recent research output has been strengthened through specialised training programmes, which have boosted the country’s scientific expertise. She praised the strong partnership between Ghana and Japan, stressing that ongoing exchange programmes, technical assistance and infrastructure development have significantly supported Noguchi’s growth. “We are very keen and happy about the deepening collaboration. We see new things emerging, and there is great potential for an improved partnership,” she said. Additionally, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Hiroshi Yoshimoto, reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting scientific advancement in the country and commended Noguchi for its leadership in disease surveillance and public health research. On his part, the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, also emphasized the indispensable role of research in international development and health security. He acknowledged Noguchi’s immense contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic and its ongoing surveillance of infectious diseases such as Lassa fever. Public health advocates say factors such as the lack of healthy food choices in Black neighborhoods and the lack of green spaces that encourage outdoor exercise lower the quality of life and increase daily stress.The history of medical racism that drives high rates of mistrust among Black folks can lead to delays in people seeking preventative care like screenings, which are key to early diagnosis and treatment. Add to that toxic masculinity, which encourages aggression, toughness and invincibility, and the ability of Black men to reach optimal health and well-being erodes.“It’s a gumbo mix of risk,” said Dr. Italo Brown, a clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine at Stanford University. For rappers, the health risks are compounded by what it means to create art in the public eye — the punishing schedule of appearances, marketing strategies that highlight gun violence and bragging rights, the 24/7 navigation of social media and the pressure of being slingshotted into the top 1% essentially overnight, he said. Exposure to vices and high risk behavior grows, leaving them even more vulnerable. Brown calls it hip-hop’s silent epidemic.&nbsp;“This is not by happenstance,” said Brown. The narrative that rappers are dying only due to violence and drugs is not what the data illustrates, he said. “It doesn’t explain the total risk that hip-hop artists face.”The business structure within hip-hop is not set up for protecting rap artists’ health, experts say.&nbsp;“With [record] labels, they’re essentially contract laborers. They don’t get health care. They don’t get retirement funds,” said Neal. “Why are we not talking about health plans for hip-hop artists? Neal would love to see hip-hop culture embrace the idea of artists going to the doctor and seeking support on a regular basis. “Part of hip-hop is this idea that we are invincible. It’s not enough to look at them as just men, and it’s not enough to look at them as just Black,” he said.It’s important for them to take action on what’s within their control, and not take on too much stress regarding what’s outside of their control, those crushingly large issues of systemic racism that lie outside the scope of individual choices, said Griffith, with Georgetown.“Black men don’t necessarily go to the doctor for preventative screening,” he said. He recommends folks prioritize routine checkup and blood work, as well as finding ways to celebrate without compromising health. Elías Padilla stopped his plans to move to the US because he fears detention and deportationFor over a year, Elías Padilla had been saving up to make the journey from Honduras to the United States as an undocumented immigrant.As an Uber driver in the snarled streets of the capital, Tegucigalpa, it hasn't been easy for him to put money aside. On bad days he makes as little as $12 (£9) in 12 hours.Now, though, his plans are on hold.The images of undocumented immigrants in major US cities being dragged away by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, their wrists in zip-ties, have deterred at least one would-be immigrant in Central America from travelling north."I want to improve my life conditions because we earn very little here," Elías explains as we drive around the city. "Take this line of work, for example: an Uber driver in the US makes in an hour what I'd make in a day."Like most Honduran immigrants, Elías says the main aim of reaching the US would be to send remittances home."But I see what Trump is doing, and it's made me think twice," he admits."I'm going to wait to see what the change in government here brings," he says, referring to the recent presidential election. "Hopefully things will improve."US President Donald Trump has ordered a massive crackdown on illegal immigrationElías's change of heart will doubtless be welcome news to the architects of US President Donald Trump's immigration policies including border czar Tom Homan and homeland security adviser Stephen Miller.As well as removing undocumented immigrants from US soil, the controversial ICE operations in Los Angeles, Chicago, Charlotte and Minneapolis were always intended also to dissuade people like Elías from even attempting to leave Honduras.However, the policies have brought an unexpected windfall to the Honduran economy: the thousands of Hondurans who live undocumented and under the radar in those cities are sending home more remittances than ever.With many undocumented Hondurans sharing the sense of a looming threat or deadline over their futures, many are trying to send every spare dollar back to their families before it is too late.Between January and October this year, there was a 26% rise in remittances to Honduras compared with the same period the previous year.In fact, even though their numbers are dwindling in the US, Hondurans increased the amount they sent home from $9.7bn (£7.2bn) in all of 2024 to more than $10.1bn (£7.5bn) in just the first nine months of this year.The BBC spoke to one, Marcos (not his real name), on the phone from a major US city where he has lived for five years, working in construction."Most of the money I send home is for the family to cover their basics like food. But also, so they can put something to one side to buy a little land on which we can eventually build a house, maybe buy a car," he says.Since Trump took office, Marcos says he only keeps the very minimum he needs for rent and food in the US. Everything else goes to Honduras.Hondurans in the US are sending home more money than ever beforeHe has steadily increased the amount he sends to his wife and two children in the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, "from $500 a month to more like $300 dollars a week," he says. He also tries to send even more in December to cover the costs of Christmas."It's like a race against time" to send home as much as possible before he's caught up in ICE's dragnet of arrests, explains Marcos."I used to think about bringing my family up here. Now, with everything happening with Trump and ICE and so much fear in the streets, I just want to make sure that if I am picked up, there'll be a little money set aside down there."In part, he adds, he's also trying to prepare for the eventuality of his arrest, knowing his family will not be able to rely on him being able to provide if he's in a detention centre for two months.But Trump's policies are not just affecting the formal economy through remittances. The illegal economy, via people-smuggling, has also been impacted.Cartels in Mexico primarily control the route taking migrants from Central America to the USJimmy (not his real name) is a former&nbsp;coyote&nbsp;or people smuggler who agreed to speak to the BBC at a location outside the capital. For 20 years he made a living taking people across Mexico, generally considered the most dangerous leg of the journey.It is an illegal industry primarily run by Mexican organised crime groups and although Jimmy claims he did not specifically work for any of the major cartels, he acknowledges he operated with their knowledge and their blessing.Today, he says, potential clients are finding "the price has doubled, from $12,000-13,000 per person to more like $25,000-30,000"."People are still getting through, though," insists Jimmy. "It was a lot more under the CBP One app [a Biden-era legal pathway to lodge asylum requests] but maybe 40% are still getting there."Fewer people are leaving because "not everyone can pay" the elevated costs of the people smuggler, he adds.Among them, Uber driver Elías Padilla.Having worked hard and sold personal items to get the funds together, Elías simply cannot afford to risk being deported soon after arriving in the US.Even though he knows his chances of successfully settling in the US have diminished under Trump, Elías says he has little choice but to wait – for either the current wave of ICE raids or the entire Trump presidency to pass.Central American migrants have seen all manner of hardline policies against them over the years, he adds – both by regional governments and by Washington. With the economic outlook in Honduras still bleak, Elías thinks there is little that can hold people back for long. Not even the current crackdown."Trump has only postponed my plans," he insists. From her perspective, this assessment is not about party loyalty or campaign rhetoric, but about daily realities that affect livelihoods, households, and future expectations.One of the earliest and most noticeable positives, she notes, has been the steady supply of electricity across the country. The absence of frequent power cuts has allowed small businesses to operate consistently and students to study without disruption. Though not dramatic, this stability has made a real difference to families who previously struggled with spoiled food, interrupted work, and extra expenses.Fuel prices have also brought some relief. With petrol selling at about GH¢10.36 and diesel around GH¢11.36, transportation costs have eased slightly. While prices are still high for many, she believes the reduction has helped drivers, traders, and commuters manage daily expenses more effectively.Beyond these early gains, Portia Nana Akua Pinamang points out that the wider economy appears to be stabilizing after years of pressure. Inflation has slowed, growth is improving, and the cedi has shown strength, beginning 2026 at roughly GH¢10.30 to the dollar. Infrastructure development has been another visible area of progress, with more than 2,000 kilometres of roads undergoing rehabilitation. The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has reacted to reports of a foreign national, said to be a Russian, who allegedly engaged in sexual activities with some Ghanaian women during a visit to Ghana, video recorded and circulated the acts without their consent on social media. In a statement, the Ministry noted that while the individual may no longer be within Ghana’s jurisdiction, the seriousness of the conduct and the state’s responsibility to pursue accountability remain unchanged. The non-consensual recording and distribution of intimate images is a criminal offence and a violation of dignity and privacy. The Ministry indicated it had already been working with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Innovations on measures to combat image-based sexual abuse, including digital safety interventions and mechanisms for content takedown. The Ministry is collaborating with the Ghana Police Service, security institutions, and international partners to explore legal options, including cross-border cooperation. Support services, including psychosocial care and legal assistance, are being coordinated through confidential channels, it said. The public is urged to exercise caution in online and offline interactions, it added.

Speaking to journalists last Thursday after bilateral meetings held on the sidelines of the 39th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Minister described visa waiver agreements as a top priority. He hinted at major announcements beginning in March and continuing through April and May.“You know that visa waiver agreements remain my priority as Foreign Minister. I expect more visa waiver agreements this year. Even within the month of March, you’ll be hearing some good news,” he stated.Mr Ablakwa expressed confidence that Ghana is on course to have one of the most valuable passports in Africa and globally. He pointed to significant upgrades, noting that the Ghanaian passport now features fully chip-embedded technology and advanced security systems, alongside expanded travel access.“It’s now probably the most secure in terms of the security features we have. It’s fully chip-embedded, and we are ahead of so many countries,” he said.The Minister also assured that the government has strengthened measures to prevent the fraudulent acquisition of passports. According to him, artificial intelligence tools and modern technology have been deployed to outpace criminal networks.On affordability, Mr Ablakwa recalled the recent 30 per cent reduction in passport fees, stressing that passports should not be treated as luxury items.“For Ghanaians to have passports, it is a right. Ghana to sign more visa waiver agreements as passport gains global strength

President Donald Trump said his administration was "going to de-escalate a little bit" in Minnesota, after the second fatal shooting of a US citizen by federal immigration officers there. "Bottom line, it was terrible. Both of them were terrible," he said in a Fox News interview on Tuesday. In early January Renee Good was fatally shot by an immigration officer, followed by Alex Pretti, who was killed after being stopped by border agents this past weekend. Pretti's death reignited local protests and public outcry across the country, and led to criticism from lawmakers in both parties. Trump's remarks are the latest sign his administration is taking a step back on its operations in Minnesota. Speaking to other reporters ahead of a rally in Iowa Tuesday night, Trump said he viewed the killing of Pretti, an intensive care nurse at a veterans' hospital, as "a very unfortunate incident". Asked by reporters about whether he agreed with characterisations of Pretti as a "domestic terrorist," Trump said: "I haven't heard that." Trump then added: "He shouldn't have been carrying a gun." Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said shortly after the shooting that Pretti "wasn't there to peacefully protest, he was there to perpetuate violence," and accused him of "domestic terrorism". The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has also said the agents fired in self-defence, after Pretti resisted attempts to disarm him. Noem said Pretti was shot because he was "brandishing" a gun during a confrontation. Eyewitnesses and local officials, however, have challenged that account, saying he had a phone in his hand, not a weapon. Local authorities said the gun was legally registered and that Pretti was shot after the firearm was removed. A preliminary report drafted by Customs and Border Protection also appears to contradict the initial DHS account of events. It says two of its agents fired their weapons at Pretti. It does not mention that Pretti was reaching for his firearm, according to a copy of the report seen by the BBC's US partner CBS News. On Monday, the DHS pulled the Minnesota mission's leader and figurehead, Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino, from the state. The department said it was deploying the White House's border tsar, Tom Homan, to take over there. Homan posted on social media on Tuesday that he had met with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and local law enforcement officials. Pretti's death, coming two weeks after the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good, enraged local residents and sparked fresh calls from state and city officials for the Trump administration to withdraw its 3,000 immigration agents and officers from the region. In the interview with Fox News, Trump appeared to defend the Minnesota operation, saying "we took thousands of hardened criminals" out of the state, "so they have good crime numbers." "That's all working out, we have Tom Homan there now," he said, before adding the administration would "de-escalate". Stephen Miller, a top White House aide working on the administration's deportation initiative, told CNN that the White House "provided clear guidance to DHS that the extra personnel that had been sent to Minnesota for force protection should be used for conducting fugitive operations to create a physical barrier between the arrest teams and the disruptors". "We are evaluating why the [US Customs and Border Patrol] team may not have been following that protocol," Miller said in his statement to CNN. Some Republican leaders and lawmakers have called for an investigation into Pretti's death, including Vermont Governor Phil Scott and US Senator Pete Ricketts of Nebraska. "The nation witnessed a horrifying situation this weekend," Ricketts wrote on X. While he reaffirmed his "support for funding ICE remains the same," Ricketts said he expected "a prioritized, transparent investigation into this incident". A federal judge has blocked DHS from destroying or altering evidence. On January 31, 2026, delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will go to the polls to elect a presidential flagbearer for the 2028 general elections. Although this is formally an internal party exercise, its implications extend far beyond partisan boundaries. The individual chosen will be a potential president of the Republic. In that sense, the decision before the delegates carries unmistakable national significance. They act not only as representatives of their party but, in a meaningful respect, as custodians of the broader public interest. Since the advent of the Fourth Republic in 1992, the NPP has conducted several presidential primaries. These contests have produced notable leaders such as Professor Albert Adu Boahen, President John Agyekum Kufuor, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice -President Mahamudu Bawumia, who have left enduring marks on Ghana’s political and institutional development. The party’s tradition, grounded in liberal democratic and conservative thought, places strong emphasis on the rule of law, constitutionalism, individual liberty, private enterprise and ethical leadership. Every major undertaking of the party, including the selection of its presidential candidate, ought to reflect these ideals with clarity and consistency. The NPP is widely recognised for its commitment to internal democracy and competitive politics. Its capacity to contest vigorously and subsequently reunite has often distinguished it within Ghana’s multiparty system. This primary election, once again, tests that reputation. Electoral contests, by their nature, generate intense debate, sharp disagreements and strong emotions. The current campaign season has not departed from this pattern. Yet, experience shows that elections pass, but words spoken during them endure. What remains are the words spoken and the conduct displayed by candidates and their authorised representatives. For this reason, restraint and measured language are indispensable. Careless statements, personal attacks or reckless accusations may secure temporary attention, but they risk long-term damage to party cohesion and public confidence. Temperate discourse before, during and after the primaries will ease reconciliation and strengthen unity. Such discipline accords with the party’s philosophical foundations and serves the strategic interest of preparing for the national contest ahead. It is also important to stress that the outcome of the primaries does not produce a real loser. Whoever emerges as flagbearer carries a collective mandate, while those who do not prevail remain essential to the shared enterprise. Victory in a party primary is collective, not personal. The primaries matter chiefly because of their capacity to position the party to regain political power and to revisit policy initiatives that have shaped Ghana’s governance and economic direction in previous administrations. Within the current field are individuals of experience and ability, each capable of contributing meaningfully to national leadership. The decisive question, however, concerns suitability for the present moment. Ghana operates within a complex global environment marked by economic uncertainty, technological change, security pressures and rising social expectations. Effective leadership today demands intellectual depth, practical judgment, administrative competence, emotional balance and the capacity to communicate clearly with a diverse citizenry. A prospective leader must, therefore, demonstrate pragmatic and implementable ideas, sound academic grounding and the ability to innovate. Equally important are personal discipline, accessibility and an inclusive disposition that inspires trust across regions and social groups. These qualities align closely with the mission of the Busia Institute for Rural and Democratic Development, which promotes thoughtful leadership, decentralised development and democratic accountability as foundations of national progress. Delegates do not merely select a candidate; they shape the moral tone of the party’s future. That responsibility demands restraint and judgment. The Presidential Elections Committee of the NPP deserves commendation for its efforts to uphold transparency and fairness. Clear rules, credible procedures and even-handed administration enhance the legitimacy of the process and reinforce confidence among party members and the wider public. Such institutional diligence reflects international best practices in democratic party management. Conversely, any candidate or supporter whose conduct undermines the process through violence, misinformation or deliberate obstruction inflicts harm, not only on the party but on the democratic culture of the nation. Any conduct that undermines a credible electoral process injures more than a political party; it weakens public confidence in democratic institutions. History records such moments with little generosity. As delegates prepare to vote, perspective remains essential. The immediate contest will pass, but its consequences will shape the party’s fortunes and Ghana’s political direction. A smooth, credible and dignified primary election will strengthen the NPP’s claim to leadership and contribute positively to democratic consolidation. Ultimately, this moment calls for statesmanship in the service of party, country and constitutional democracy. All applicants must still pass security checks and meet visa requirements. They can travel using an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) for up to 90 days. A senior State Department official said the new system reduces wait times, with applicants in over 80% of countries able to schedule appointments in less than 60 days. Like millions of football fans who descended on Morocco for the African Cup of Nations final here in Rabat, and hundreds of millions more who watched globally, this has been an amazing tournament.&nbsp;The football infrastructure here has been absolutely worldclass. The quality, efficiency, and cost of the trains services are as good as, if not better than some of the best in the world. Moroccan hospitality before, during and after the tournament has been exceptional.&nbsp;Significant improvements though still need to be made in the overall quality of hotels and customer service, more so ahead of the soon-to-be jointly hosted 2030 #FIFAWorldCup to be held in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. I am confident Morocco will pull it off.For now, here are 12 takeaways, based on my up-close observations.1. #SENEGAL: While understandably frustrated by very poor officiating, walking off the pitch in protest risked match abandonment and damaged Africa’s global football image. It was a terrible call by the Senegalese coach that did not honor host country Morocco, the continent, #CAF or #FIFA. Thank God that #SadioMane had the presence of mind to stand his ground and convince his Senegalese teammates to return to the field and fight as men.2. #MOROCCO: Ahead of all CAF and FIFA sanctioned football events, Morocco must prioritize a more robust stadium security system to contain fan anger and prevent escalations from erupting into full blown riots when decisions go against the home team.&nbsp;It was unacceptable to see Moroccan stadium officials and players (Hakimi and others included) deliberately throw away the towel of the Senegalese goalkeeper (which is needed to wipe down gloves during play). The same antic was used against Nigeria, including a racist slur by a Moroccan fan who threw a banana at Nigerian goalkeeper #Nwabali.&nbsp;These antics were juvenile, unnecessary, and highly provocative.&nbsp;It really took a shine off of the exceptional and kind hospitality that Moroccans always go out of their way to extend to foreigners. (Topic for another time).3. #CAF: Africa’s apex football association, must enhance referee and VAR training to minimize controversial calls in high-stakes moments, and to reduce the likelihood of prolonged disputes and delays. In several of the tournament’s matches, the level of officiating fell well below acceptable international standards.&nbsp;Poor officiating in several matches undermined the credibility of the tournament..Calls were made that should not have been made. Calls were also not made that should have been made.&nbsp;Consequently, the media and fans were justified in their allegations or suspicions of official collusion favoring one team over the other.&nbsp;Whether true or not, is not the issue. Sometimes, perception is reality!4. #FIFA: should develop clear international protocols for handling team walk-offs, including immediate sanctions to Federations, coaches, and players, to deter similar actions in future tournaments.5. #SENEGAL: And every other country for that matter, needs a mature level-headed player in the mold of #SadioMane to de-escalate tensions swiftly. Thanks to his leadership, sanity prevailed, a full-blown crisis was avoided, the game resumed, and victory was secured.6. #MOROCCO: And all other countries, should avoid high-risk penalty techniques like the Panenka in pressure situations, unless the taker is mentally prepared, as Diaz’s tame effort proved costly. The same seemingly laissez faire approach decisively cost #Nigeria its Semi Final match against Morocco when #Chukwueze gifted the Moroccan goalkeeper.&nbsp;7. #CAF: Implement stricter time limits for VAR reviews to avoid extending stoppage time excessively (e.g. 24 minutes), which fueled frustration and chaos.8. #FIFA: Promote cross-confederation education on sportsmanship to counter perceptions of African football as chaotic, and to ensure fair play overrides national biases.9. #MOROCCO: As AFCON hosts, and ahead of the 2030 World Cup, consider this a test-run and invest in enhanced crowd management strategies, including riot police readiness, to safeguard players, officials and fans, during heated matches.10. #SENEGAL: Protesting soft penalties can backfire. The 16-20 minute delay highlighted poor sportsmanship. Any other referee could have called for a forfeit of the match in favor of Morocco, which would only have added to the shameful drama.11. #CAF: Enforce post-match reviews of referee decisions to build trust, and address complaints like Senegal’s disallowed goal that preceded the penalty drama.12. #FIFA: Monitor and advise tournament organizers especially in politically charged situations (for example in matches involving arch rivals Morocco and Algeria) and to prevent external factors, including excessive fan nationalism from escalating on-field disputes.By Victor Oladokun, Senior Advisor to Dr Akinwumi Adesina.

Mohamed Salah scored and Egypt eliminated defending champion Ivory Coast to move into the Africa Cup of Nations semifinals after a 3-2 victory on Saturday. Salah nabbed his fourth goal of the tournament — Egypt’s third of the game — in the 52nd minute and the Pharaohs needed it as Ivory Coast threatened to come back twice from two goals down. But Egypt held on in Agadir despite relentless Ivorian pressure and booked a semifinal date with 2021 champion Senegal in Tangier on Wednesday. Ivory Coast had a woeful start as Franck Kessie lost the ball in midfield after a poor touch and Odilon Kossounou fell over instead of cutting out Emam Ashour’s ball for Omar Marmoush, who scored in the fourth minute. Ramy Rabia produced a brilliant block to preserve the lead then scored himself with a header from a corner in the 32nd. Ivory Coast finally pulled one back in the 40th when Egypt defender Ahmed Fotouh bundled in a dangerous Yan Diomande free kick that Kossounou headed on. Salah restored Egypt’s two-goal cushion early in the second half when Rabia caught the Ivorian defense out with a long ball for Ashour, who set up Salah with the outside of his boot. Guéla Doué pulled one back again with his heel in a goalmouth scramble after goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy clawed the ball away in the 73rd, but the Elephants' equalizer never came. Egypt is bidding for a record-extending eighth title. Super Eagles fly again Victor Osimhen scored one goal and set up another for Nigeria to down Algeria 2-0 for its place in the semifinals. The Super Eagles needed patience in Marrakech against the team with the best defense in the tournament after failing to take their chances in the first half — Akor Adams fired over when he had only Luca Zidane in the Algeria goal to beat, and Calvin Bassey had another effort cleared off the line. Osimhen finally scored after the break when he headed the ball back across Zidane’s direction of movement from Bruno Onyemaechi’s cross. It was the first goal at the tournament conceded by Zidane. But it was quickly followed by the second. Ava DuVernay to Direct David Oyelowo Again in New Thriller Heist of Benin

DStv operator MultiChoice has lost 2.8 million subscribers since its height on 31 March 2023, declining from 17.3 million to 14.5 million, a reduction of over 16% in two years.MultiChoice’s new owner, French media conglomerate Groupe Canal+, recently published an investor presentation with charts illustrating MultiChoice’s decline in recent years.It showed that MultiChoice was not only declining in subscriber numbers but also in other key metrics, such as revenue and trading profit.MultiChoice’s decline has been evident in South Africa since 2016, when the company started losing its highest-value DStv Premium subscribers.That was the same year as Netflix’s global expansion. The company announced the global rollout of its services in January 2016 at CES.South Africa’s pay-TV giant was able to mask this decline through gains on its lower-tier packages and growth in the rest of Africa.When MultiChoice was spun out of Naspers in 2019, it started bundling Compact Plus subscribers in with DStv Premium, in a new “Premium market segment” category.This hid the decline of DStv Premium for a year before this new combined category also started recording lower numbers. In other words, by 2021, DStv Compact Plus was also in decline.MultiChoice also switched to reporting subscribers according to a 90-day active metric rather than the number of subscribers at 31 March and 30 September.Its year-end subscribers went into decline in 2022&nbsp;in South Africa, but the new 90-day active metric allowed MultiChoice to continue reporting subscriber growth in South Africa until its 2023 financial year.Subscriber growth in the rest of Africa also took a turn in 2023, with MultiChoice’s results across the group showing substantial subscriber declines in 2024 and 2025.These declines were evident in both the traditional year-end and 90-day active subscriber numbers reported by MultiChoice. <img src="https://mybroadband.co.za/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/MultiChoice-DStv-group-and-SA-subscribers-2012-2025.jpg"><img src="https://mybroadband.co.za/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/MultiChoice-DStv-90-day-active-subscriber-base-FY24-FY25-1200x519.jpg">In its last published financial results for the year ended 31 March 2025, before Canal+’s final takeover, MultiChoice blamed macroeconomic factors for its continued decline.“The past two financial years have been a period of significant financial disruption for economies, corporates and consumers across sub-Saharan Africa due to challenging macroeconomic factors,” it stated.“Combined with the impact of structural industry changes in video entertainment such as the rise of piracy, streaming services and social media, this has materially affected the overall performance of the MultiChoice Group.”Aside from losing 2.8 million traditional linear TV subscribers, MultiChoice said it had to absorb a R10.2 billion negative impact on its topline due to local currency depreciation against the US dollar.“Management acted decisively to ensure that the group could withstand these headwinds, focusing on key areas within its control,” it said.“This has meant maintaining a discipline of inflationary pricing, with price increases of ~5.7% in South Africa in FY25 (FY24: 5.6%) and an average of 31% in local currency in Rest of Africa (FY24: 27%).”MultiChoice said this enabled it to offset subscriber volume pressures and deliver 1% year-on-year organic revenue growth in the current financial year.“In addition, further efficiencies were implemented to manage costs and cash flows without unduly sacrificing the group’s customer value proposition,” it said.“In this regard, the group delivered R3.7 billion in cost savings, well ahead of management’s initial R2.0-billion target, and the revised R2.5 billion target set at its half-year results.”Despite these cost savings, MultiChoice reported that organic trading profit declined by 9% year-on-year across the group due to the increased operating costs in Showmax in its peak investment year.<img src="https://mybroadband.co.za/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/CanalPlus-MultiChoice-DStv-decline-FY22-FY25-1200x509.jpg">MultiChoice performance metrics in Canal+ investor presentation published on 21 November 2025In an investor presentation published on 21 November, Canal+ said that it has plans to return MultiChoice to growth through several key interventions.Canal+ said it would reinvest in subscriber acquisition to capture growth opportunity in the underpenetrated African pay-TV market.It will offset higher subscriber acquisition costs through synergies and a granular focus on optimal distribution.Canal+ said it would set ambitious growth targets and incentivise teams accordingly, applying a “no small market” philosophy for the continent.This means Canal+ will not view any market on the African continent as too small to invest in for future growth.Besides driving subscriber acquisition to increase revenue, Canal+ stated that it would develop and implement plans to generate meaningful incremental revenues and revenue synergies across the business.Additionally, Canal+ said it would enhance MultiChoice’s customer value proposition. It will strengthen the content line-up by sharing material across platforms and apply marketing best practices.Canal+ also said it would address the cost side of the business. It plans to reset the cost base for a sustainable and profitable pay-TV business, in contrast with past cost savings plans aimed solely at short-term profitability.It stated that it would deliver meaningful cost synergies, with an initial focus on content and technology costs, especially large cost items at a global scale.
