In the meantime, they’ve been running Flavours of Ethiopia on Allara Street, but when an opportunity came up to open a second venue close to their old location, they jumped at the chance.“Our first business was here; we started here!” Elsa told Region.“Global Cafe was just a small takeaway, but this is bigger, more classy, with a big kitchen, a full bar and our international beer.”Girmay agreed: “We wanted to show more. They’d mostly showcased wot dishes (stews) served from bain maries but now have Ethiopian salads, samosas, tibs (sauteed meat dishes) and desserts.I visited with my sister to taste the vegetarian beyaynetu, a sharing plate of many different dishes served on injera, a traditional sourdough flatbread. We also ordered the crunchy lentil samosas for our entree, which were served with a very tasty spiced yoghurt.Among the dishes on the platter was shiro, a rich and creamy dish served in a pot.Elsa explained that shiro is a dish made from ground chickpeas, creating a naturally creamy texture. We found the flavour a little smokey and spiced. Other dishes on the platter included duba wot (pumpkin stew) and misir wot (red lentil stew), both cooked with the traditional Ethiopian spice mix berbere, which is beautifully aromatic with just the right amount of heat.I also particularly enjoyed the fasolia side dish of spiced green beans and carrots. At $25 per person, the sharing plate is remarkably good value and very filling, with an extra plate of injera served on the side.Girmay said that they wanted their food to be accessible.“We want to be a local attraction, serving local wine, good coffee and good food at an affordable price … and in a good location!” he said.In addition to table service, the restaurant also serves quick, affordable lunches from a hot box around the corner to cater to the busy public servants in the area. For now, table service at lunchtime is by reservation only, and coffees are only available dine-in, but they’re hoping to expand that in the new year.The couple came to Canberra from Ethiopia in 2002, and Girmay enthusiastically describes himself as ‘a Canberra Ambassador’. He is also a big fan of Canberra region wines, especially Pankhurst Wines which Girmay was delighted to discover has a connection to Ethiopia. The Problematic Realities of Detty December in Ghana

My good people, we are finally in the midst of Detty December! For this month’s column, I’ve compiled a list of concerts, festivals, and fetes across Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa where you can catch some of the hottests acts and hear some of the best music, like Everyday People and Days Like This, two traveling parties making multiple stops on the continent.But first, some context: Across many African nations – and most famously in the pop culture capitals of Lagos, Nigeria, and Accra, Ghana – December into early January is a festive season where pleasure becomes paramount (read “detty” as “Dirty” in any number of accents, recognizing the hedonistic nature of the season). The globe’s biggest Afropop stars throw their own shows back home or headline massive festivals, events of all kinds abound, beaches get packed out with buzzing groups of friends and family, and for many, schools close, work slows, and the joyful gatherings seem never ending.&nbsp;Since I was a little girl growing up on the American East Coast, my parents always prized their visits back to their native Sierra Leone in December, first taking me when I was nine years old in 2002. Whether we’re called JC (“Jus Cam” or “Just Came”), IJGB (“I Just Got Back”), or something else, many diasporans head to Africa to take advantage of holiday vacation time, reconnect with family, and escape the stressors of the hyper-capitalist West. Increasingly, though, travellers who only know Africa as a stolen homeland have made their way there too, raising the awareness of Detty December beyond locals, immigrants, and their children to a retreat for Black folks worldwide.&nbsp;In furthering this phenomenon, 2019 is particularly notable. That’s when Ghana celebrated a tourism initiative called the Year of Return. In commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the world-changing horror of enslaved Africans’ arrival in the English colony of Virginia, Ghanaian officials encouraged African Americans and other Black diasporans to visit. The country uncomplicated the visa approval process by offering visas on arrival (a program continued in the festive seasons since) and promoted a bustling calendar of cultural events. “We know of the extraordinary achievements and contributions they [Africans in the diaspora] made to the lives of the Americans, and it is important that this symbolic year—400 years later—we commemorate their existence and their sacrifices,” outgoing Ghanaian president President Nana Akufo-Addo said in 2018 while formally launching the Year of Return in Washington D.C.&nbsp;Detty December is a sweet time of year, but I need not sugar coat it: it’s also a complicated one. Getting to these places in December is a massive expense, especially as flights into Africa jump into the thousands for roundtrips – and have only gotten more expensive since Covid dramatically slowed travel in 2020. On the ground, cities like Lagos and Accra see price gouging in December as commerce targets the influx of much wealthier visitors than most folks living in these cites. Last year, Chance the Rapper and I discussed concerns that while festivals like the one he threw in 2023 create business and employment opportunities in the area, those undertakings could be marginalizing locals, too. However, in a report for OkayAfrica, Rolling Stone contributor Nelson C.J. noted that events businesses in Lagos and Accra are seeing opportunities and revenues scale back this year amidst ongoing economic crises.If you find yourself on the more privileged side of the economic spectrum, consider donating some of your Detty December time (or cash) to service opportunities. If you’ll be in Accra on December 27 and have made your parents proud by becoming a medical professional, you could sign up to volunteer at the Community Health Fair organized by the company behind one of the cities premier music festivals, AfroFuture, Black Health Connect, and Distant Relatives. There, they aim to provide 1,500 community members with screenings for blood pressure issues, diabetes, sexually transmitted infections, and malaria, among other services. I also learned about young Nigerians creating their own initiatives through Eche Emole, co-founder of the African travel hub AfroPass and community Afropolitan that helped me navigate Ghana last year. A GUIDE TO AFRICA’S DETTY DECEMBER

They are easy to install, and knock chunks off electricity bills. It may not be Romeo and Juliet, but Spain’s balcony scene is heating up as the country embraces what has hitherto been a mainly German love affair with DIY plug-in solar panels.Panels have already been installed on about 1.5m German balconies, where they are so popular the term Balkonkraftwerk (balcony power plant) has been coined.Manufacturers say that installing a couple of 300-watt panels will give a saving of up to 30% on a typical household’s electricity bill. With an outlay of €400-800 and with no installation cost, the panels could pay for themselves within six years.In Spain, where two thirds of the population live in apartments and installing panels on the roof requires the consent of a majority of the building’s residents, this DIY technology has obvious advantages.With solar balconies, no such consent is required unless the facade is listed as of historic interest or there is a specific prohibition from the residents’ association or the local authority. Furthermore, as long as the installation does not exceed 800 watts it doesn’t require certification, which can cost from €100 to €400, depending on the area.“The beauty of the solar balconies is they are flexible, cheap and plug straight into the domestic network via a converter, so you don’t have to pay for the installation,” says Santiago Vernetta, CEO of Tornasol Energy, one of Spain’s main suppliers.As the cost of solar panels continues to fall, Vernetta says the labour cost of installation is often greater than the price of the materials.As with all solar power systems, balcony power only works in daylight and a battery storage system can add at least €1,000 to the installation cost.Raquel Paule, director of the Madrid-based Fundación Renovables, says the increasingly popular energy communities, where residents can benefit from solar installations on the roofs of nearby schools and sports centres, are another way around the problem of majority consent.“Balcony power is another piece in the puzzle,” she says. “They are another step towards using the built environment to generate electricity.”Vernetta says the vertical surface area of cities is far greater than that of the roofs and that, in Spain, balcony panels benefit more than roof panels from the low winter sun.Cities such as Helsinki are already experimenting with buildings with solar panel cladding.“Plug-in solar is part of the whole array of options,” says Michael Schmela, director of market intelligence at SolarPower Europe, an umbrella group for 320 European solar power organisations.“What’s special about balcony power is it’s so versatile and you can install it as part of the building.“This is the next step. The technology is there but the regulations and architects have to embrace it. There are so many solutions and balcony solar is the latest trend.”Paule emphasises that self-sufficiency, whether in individual households or energy communities, is a vital part of energy transition, especially for cities, which depend on outside sources for about 97% of their electricity.“Cities need to become more self-sufficient by generating more,” she says. “Energy transition involves a change from cities depending on a centralised system with big companies supplying electricity to a more widely distributed, more democratic and more participative model, and this is what the energy companies are scared of.”“Big energy companies should be pushing for renewables because they’ve played a big part in getting us into this situation,” she says. “Instead of creating obstacles they should be facilitators by giving everyone access to the grid that they control.”While some towns and regions have offered small financial incentives, the German boom has been fuelled by the rise in electricity costs after Russia invaded Ukraine and the ruling that neighbours have no right to object to balcony panels.Although balcony power is only a fraction of its solar energy capacity, Germany remains far and away the European leader in solar installation. It has set a target of sourcing 80% of electricity from renewables by 2030. The EU target is 42% , which Schmela believes will be achieved.Next in line after Germany in the solar stakes are Spain, Italy and Poland, while balcony power is gaining in popularity in France. Meanwhile, Belgium, which outlawed plug-in solar devices over fears of having unregistered systems feeding into the grid, will lift its ban.“For years solar has been the fastest-growing and cheapest in the energy sector,” Schmela says, adding that what is needed now is battery development and greater cohesion between wind, solar and other renewables.Vernetta says Spain has been slow to catch on to balcony power, but remains confident the technology will take off.“If 1.5 million Germans have bought solar balcony kits there must be something in it,” he says.

The fun and games between Microsoft and Google continues, and for its latest trick, the Windows-maker just made Google disappear. “New tactic just dropped,” complained one Google exec. “How low can they go!?”This appears to be the follow-up to Microsoft changing the look and feel of its Bing search results to mimic Google. “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” Chrome’s boss posted when that was outed. “But Microsoft spoofing the Google homepage is another tactic in its long history of tricks to confuse users &amp; limit choice.”That tactic was reversed, but now we have this new one. “Recently, we saw Microsoft tricking searchers into thinking they were searching in Google and not on Bing,” SEO Roundtable reported, when the latest ruse was first spotted. “Now, Bing is hiding the Google search results and placing when you search Bing for the term Google. Plus, Bing is showing a ‘Promoted by Microsoft’ search box.”In essence, if you search for Google through Bing in your browser, you’ll see a “promoted by Microsoft” dropdown search box negating the need to click through to Google after all. “Bing is also testing a version with that Google looking logo again but not hiding the Google search listings below them.” I have approached Microsoft for any comment on this latest update and the response.These updates might be wryly amusing, but the question remains whether they’re actually effective. Google dominates search and no-one has yet to make much of a dent. TikTok briefly went dark in the US over the weekend, after the Supreme Court denied a bid by Chinese owner ByteDance to overturn a law banning it.But it was back after a day with a message thanking incoming president Donald Trump for his "efforts" in restoring the app.On Friday, the Supreme Court upheld a law, passed by Congress, to ban TikTok.It said the ban was "designed to prevent China - a designated foreign adversary - from leveraging its control over ByteDance to capture the personal data of US TikTok users".The law was due to kick in on Sunday, but on Saturday night, the app went dark.Users in the US who tried to use it were met with a note reading: "A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the US. Unfortunately that means you can't use TikTok for now."Then, on Sunday, the app was back up and running with a message: "Thanks for your patience and support. As a result of President Trump's efforts, TikTok is back in the US!"However, that was only for people who already had the app - it was still unavailable to download on app stores in the US.Posting on Truth Social, a social media platform he owns, Trump said: "I'm asking companies not to let TikTok stay dark!"Trump said he would issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period of time before the ban is introduced, "so that we can make a deal to protect our national security".TikTok boss Shou Zi Chew is expected at Trump's inauguration on Monday afternoon.An executive order is an instruction from the president which has the weight of the law behind it.His order, he said, would give the company time to find a US partner to buy half of the company."I would like the United States to have a 50% ownership position in a joint venture. By doing this, we save TikTok, keep it in good hands and allow it to stay up," he said.The Biden administration made clear they would not enforce the law - so another option would be for Trump to follow suit and allow the law to stand but tell the Department of Justice (DoJ) to ignore it.The government would be effectively telling Apple and Google they will not be punished for continuing to allow people to download TikTok onto their devices, meaning the law would remain in place but would essentially be redundant.Obviously, the firms might be uncomfortable about breaking the law even if they have been told doing so is fine - as it would be effectively requiring them to take the president's word for it that they will not face punishment.Up until now, ByteDance has been resolute that no sale of its prize asset in the US is on the table.But could that change now that it has actually been banned?Potential buyers continue to line up - with Bloomberg News reporting on Tuesday that the firm was looking at a sale to billionaire Elon Musk, though TikTok described this as "pure fiction".Trump's former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and billionaire businessman Frank McCourt are among those who have previously expressed an interest in buying it.Mr McCourt, a former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, said he had secured $20bn in verbal commitments from a consortium of investors to bid for TikTok.There is an even more left field - and considerably less serious - proposed owner.The biggest YouTuber in the world Jimmy Donaldson - AKA MrBeast - has claimed he is now in the running to make a deal after he had billionaires reaching out to him about it.TikTok was the only ByteDance app which became available again after the ban - though only for people who already had the app.It's still unavailable to download from Apple and Google's app stores.As of Monday morning, other apps owned by the company are still unavailable to use in the US, The Verge reports.These include Lemon8, another social media app which has been compared to Pinterest, and CapCut, a video editing app.Meanwhile Marvel Snap, a digital card game published by a ByteDance subsidiary, also went down - which caught even its US-based developer Second Dinner off guard.The company posted on X on Sunday that the outage was a "surprise", and later said it "hoped to have it back online within 24 hours".TikTok says it has 170 million users in the US who, on average, spent 51 minutes per day on the app in 2024.While its future is still a little uncertain, rivals such as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts may benefit.Users bring advertisers - so this could be a big financial boost to those platforms."Chief marketing officers who we've spoken with confirmed that they will divert their media dollars to Meta and Google if they can no longer advertise on TikTok," said Kelsey Chickering, an analyst at market research company Forrester.Other potential winners include Twitch, which made its name on hosting livestreams - a popular feature on TikTok. Ghana launches Channel MOE to revolutionise education across Africa

Mia le Roux who was set to represent South Africa at the Miss Universe finals this weekend in Mexico has pulled out of the competition, organisers have announced, citing health concerns.&nbsp;The 28-year-old&nbsp;made history as the first-ever deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa in August, following a controversy-hit competition which saw one finalist withdraw after being trolled over her Nigerian heritage.She had spent weeks in Mexico preparing for the finale of the prestigious beauty contest.&nbsp;The Miss South Africa organisation in a statement said Ms Le Roux's health and well-being "are our utmost priority" and pledged to support her until she "returns to full health".&nbsp;The last-minute withdrawal means South Africa will not be represented at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant, where Ms Le Roux was among 120 beauty queens vying for the coveted title."Making this decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed upon me," she said in the statement.&nbsp;"However, I am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery so that I may continue to serve my country with full strength.”She has not disclosed the nature of the health problem.The Miss South Africa organisation said Ms Le Roux had shown “incredible courage and grace throughout this difficult period”.&nbsp;"Our hearts are with her as she takes the necessary steps toward recovery,” the organisation added.&nbsp;Last month, Ms Le Roux expressed her excitement about the chance to represent South Africa on the Miss Universe stage terming it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for my voice to be heard".She said then that she hoped to showcase her country’s "beautiful diversity".She was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at the age of one and has a cochlear implant to help her perceive sound.In an earlier interview, she said it had taken two years of speech therapy before she was able to say her first words.
