Venezuela will resume flights for its nationals deported by the US, after reaching an agreement with the Trump administration.Venezuela, which does not have diplomatic relations with the US, had initially agreed to accept deportees in February. But President Nicolás Maduro halted flights in March after a dispute with the Trump administration."Tomorrow, thanks to the government's perseverance, we'll resume flights to continue rescuing and freeing migrants from prisons in the United States," Maduro said in a televised address on Saturday, Reuters reports.The White House and US State Department did not respond to BBC requests for comment.Trump's special envoy, Richard Grenell, had initially brokered a deal with Venezuela's government to take back its citizens deported from the US."Venezuela has agreed to receive, back into their Country, all Venezuela illegal aliens who were encamped in the US, including gang members of Tren de Aragua," Trump wrote on Truth Social at the time. "Venezuela has further agreed to supply the transportation back."But Maduro halted deportation flights from the US on 8 March, after the US Treasury Department suspended the energy giant Chevron's permission to export oil from Venezuela, the AP reported.On 15 March, the Trump administration deported 238 Venezuelans, who they alleged belonged to the Tren de Aragua gang, to El Salvador, where they were detained at a mega-prison.The administration has not named the individuals deported, or provided details of their alleged criminal behaviourIn a statement issued on Saturday, Jorge Rodríguez, president of Venezuela's national assembly, appeared to address the matter of the Venezuelan nationals currently held in El Salvador.He said Venezuela accepted a deal to assure "the return of our compatriots to their nation with the safeguard of their Human Rights," the AP reported."Migrating isn't a crime, and we won't rest until everyone who wants to return is back and we rescue our kidnapped brothers in El Salvador."Trump has used the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 as a legal basis for removing 137 of those Venezuelan deportees, which immediately prompted a legal challenge.A federal judge in Washington, DC sought to block the deportation flights to El Salvador via a verbal order.However, the planes landed in El Salvador, and the country's president Nayib Bukele posted on social media that the intervention came "too late".The White House has faced allegations of defying the judge's order, which it refutes.The judge, James Boesberg, demanded more details from a government lawyer at a hearing on Friday.

The World Bank has delivered a damning verdict on the Caribbean’s education system, labelling it as being in a state of crisis and warning of severe consequences if urgent reforms are not implemented.During a virtual webinar on Monday, senior officials from the international financial institution laid bare the systemic inadequacies plaguing Caribbean schools, highlighting outdated teaching practices, ill-equipped infrastructure, and widening educational inequities. They stressed the need for significant financial investment and enhanced teacher support to reverse the region’s educational decline.The World Bank’s Country Director for the Caribbean, Lilia Burunciuc did not mince words as she described a dire state of affairs.&nbsp;“We are confronting a crisis that is jeopardising the future of the Caribbean, a crisis in education,” she said. “This may sound dramatic, but the impact on education is so critical, and the systems are failing. Indeed, this constitutes a crisis. We must ask ourselves and answer questions about how we can strengthen foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking to improve learning outcomes.”The World Bank’s scathing assessment pinpointed numerous flaws within the Caribbean’s education system.In a detailed analysis, Victoria Levin, senior economist in the World Bank’s education global practice cited outdated teaching methods, inadequate infrastructure, and severe disparities in educational access as key contributors to the region’s educational underperformance.“Teaching practices in the Caribbean are still quite traditional, focusing on rigid curricula that do not meet the needs of 21st-century learners,” Levin said. “Teachers lack the necessary support to adapt their instructional methods, incorporate social-emotional skills, or assist students with special educational needs. Additionally, some countries lack professional standards for teacher recruitment and deployment, leaving inexperienced educators struggling in the classroom. Consequently, classroom time is not utilised effectively, hindering students’ knowledge and skill acquisition.”Levin also raised concerns about the declining quality of educational infrastructure.“Countries are not investing enough in capital expenditures or educational infrastructure. Schools are outdated and ill-equipped to handle the increasing frequency of extreme climate events. Digital infrastructure is equally inadequate, with poor Internet access and unequal access to digital devices, limiting students’ opportunities for continued learning and digital skills development.”The World Bank’s report also criticised the Caribbean’s highly stratified secondary education system, which entrenches social inequalities.Levin highlighted the so-called “two-tier system” where elite schools cater to students from wealthier families, while under-resourced institutions serve lower-income communities.“The elite secondary schools maintain their privileged status through highly selective admissions processes based on standardised entrance exams. This serves as a sorting mechanism with lifelong consequences for students,” Levin said. “Meanwhile, the rest of the secondary school system fails to deliver the necessary competencies, perpetuating social inequality.”The World Bank also condemned the region’s inadequate provision for special education, citing a lack of reliable data, insufficient specialised schools, and a shortage of qualified teachers. Levin pointed to rigid curricula that fail to accommodate diverse learning needs and highlighted the absence of essential facilities such as accessible toilets and ramps.&nbsp;“Special education remains under-prioritised, with missing policies and procedures for transitioning students into or out of special education,” she added.Despite notable progress in educational access such as an increase in pre-primary enrolment from 65 per cent to 85 per cent over the last two decades, learning outcomes across the Caribbean remain worryingly low. Results from the global database of harmonised test scores show that students in the Caribbean are significantly underperforming compared to their peers in high-income and upper-middle-income countries.Levin revealed that “students are struggling with foundational skills, such as literacy and numeracy, even in primary schools. Numeracy skills, in particular, are lagging behind literacy by the end of primary education in most countries.”This learning deficit extends into secondary education.&nbsp;Levin said: “Students who fall behind in early grades on foundational skills are unable to master more advanced competencies later on. This is evident in CSEC exam results, where less than 80 per cent of students passed English and fewer than half passed Maths, even among the better-performing students.”The situation is further exacerbated by persistently low post-secondary and tertiary enrolment rates across the region, which limit young people’s access to higher education and better job opportunities.The World Bank also highlighted a growing disconnect between education and labour market requirements. Burunciuc noted that Caribbean employers consistently report skills shortages, indicating that the current education system is failing to prepare students for the workforce.She also expressed concern about declining parental engagement.Both Levin and Burunciuc stressed the urgent need for increased investment in education across the Caribbean. Levin noted that while the region spends more per student on tertiary education than high-income countries, it allocates significantly less funding to primary and secondary education.“With the share of the young population declining across the region, it is crucial to invest more in every child to ensure they receive quality education and acquire the skills necessary to be productive adults,” Levin argued. “If we can fix the quality of education, we can achieve tremendous impacts, including higher productivity, reduced crime and risky behaviours, improved health, and greater civic engagement.”Although the World Bank’s findings paint a bleak picture of the current state of Caribbean education, they also provide a roadmap for change. The organisation urges Caribbean governments to modernise curricula, enhance teacher training, and increase investment in digital infrastructure.Officials said that addressing the deep-seated inequities within the education system is critical to ensuring that all students regardless of their socio-economic background have access to high-quality education.Burunciuc concluded with a stark warning: “This is not just an education crisis; it is a crisis that threatens the future of the Caribbean. Trinidad and Tobago is beginning to reap the benefits of Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley’s visit to Ghana, as the West African country recently gifted the country with ten thousand yam seeds.According to Dr Rowley, the gift of yams will hopefully play a part in improving local diets and reducing the country’s billion-dollar food import bill.But, he said this can only be achieved if citizens consume it over other imported products.Speaking at the Tucker Valley Shade House, Chaguaramas Agricultural Park in Chaguaramas yesterday, Rowley said the intention was to multiply and propagate the species into the farming community.“We recently received as a gift from Dr Mitchell at the Ghanian authorities, 10,000 units of planting material of four varieties of yams, so, we are introducing those varieties into Trinidad and Tobago now. I am particularly pleased this morning to associate my office and myself with this initiative, because I believe that it will have far-reaching contributions to something that we talk about a lot and that is reducing our food import bill,” Rowley said.“If you talk to anybody in this country about food import, they will tell you that this country imports too much of its food and we need to reduce our food import bill. But, that objective can only be achieved in two ways; if we produce more food locally and if we consume what we produce.”“I believe that if we produce high-quality ground provisions here in Trinidad and Tobago and make it known to those who prepare meals, that we can have an impact as producers of those components,” he added.While reminiscing on his early days growing up in Tobago, in a community that grew and planted local produce, Rowley said for it to become part of our diets, citizens are going to have to embrace provision and see it as an alternative to other imported products.He said, “While I was in Ghana, I was able to sample a number of these white yams, smooth, soft, beautifully tasting white yams which can replace the white potato that we import. You know we import a lot of what you call ‘Irish potatoes.’ It’s white potato from Canada. That forms a huge part of our diet in very many ways.“A lot of that can be replaced by yams and the older ladies will tell you that just having boiled the yam as part of the diet associated with stews and vegetables and so on, that had been a part of our diet which we have lost over time. So, we are aiming to put back on the table in Trinidad and Tobago tasty, healthy, white yams.”He said the four variety of yams will be planted across both islands and should be harvested within the next six to nine months.In addition to planting at Chaguaramas, he said yams were already planted in the western part of Tobago and in two weeks’ time, yams will also be planted in Mason Hall.The PM said he hopes that by planting the yams at different locations across the country, Government will be able to see what soils they will do best in. He said it is against that backdrop a decision will be made on which varieties to invest in and encourage local farmers to grow those.“I really would like to see the output of these yams in the market of T&amp;T, because it is only when we plant more, to plant more and to do so sensibly, we will be able to bring in new varieties. The ones that we’ve lost, we need to improve our gene pool by bringing in better gene quality as tested in other countries. We test them here, make our own research, come up with our own data and choose our own varieties.“So, when we do that, we can now encourage the farmers confidently to plant these varieties. And when we plant them, we could say to our national population, ‘Get to know these produce. They are good for you. They are good for the country.’“We want to grow what we eat and we’re asking you to eat what we grow. That is the only way that we can impact significantly on this food import bill—by having more food grown locally and we consume what we grow. These yams are now in our hands. As we grow them, we won’t have to spend any foreign exchange on them. All we have to do is want to eat them.“So, let’s look forward to the harvest and let’s look forward to the main news that will come where slices of white yams obtained from Ghanian diets, from Ghanian fields, from our friends in Ghana, from the government and people of Ghana to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.”Also present were prime minister-designate Stuart Young, Minister of Youth Development and National Service Foster Cummings, Minister of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries Kazim Hosein and Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture Avinash Singh.

Caribbean crime surge: Should tourists be worried?

Australia-based mining firm Atlantic Lithium has made an urgent appeal to the government of Ghana for fiscal relief to rescue its planned Ewoyaa lithium project, warning that collapsing global lithium prices have rendered the venture economically unviable.The company, which has invested approximately $70 million since 2016, is developing what would be Ghana’s first lithium mine.&nbsp;The project, located near Mankessim in the Central Region, was expected to place Ghana among the world’s top 10 spodumene concentrate producers. However, sharp declines in lithium prices—down more than 80 per cent from their November 2022 peak—have thrown its future into uncertainty.“We have done the maths and it doesn’t make sense at all,” Atlantic Lithium's General Manager, Ahmed-Salim Adam, told Reuters. “We have written to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources for urgent help on the fiscals. If not, the project cannot proceed.”Ghana, already Africa’s leading gold producer, had hoped to benefit from the growing global demand for electric vehicles (EVs) by establishing the Ewoyaa mine as a strategic source of lithium, a key component in EV batteries. The mine was granted a 15-year lease in 2023, with construction expected to begin by the end of 2024.The project is projected to produce up to 360,000 tons of lithium annually, primarily for export to the United States. But in addition to the commodity price crash, delays in parliamentary ratification of the mining lease have stalled progress. While lithium prices have recently stabilised due to recovering auto production, analysts remain cautious.“EV-led demand growth remains strong, but it continues to be overwhelmed by mine supply growth,” said Tom Price, Head of Commodities at Panmure Liberum. He also noted that U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed 25% tariff on Chinese EVs has further dampened global demand and price optimism.Compounding the problem, Ghana’s entry into the lithium market is relatively recent, making it less attractive to investors who may prefer the more established mining regimes of Australia, Chile, and China. The internal rate of return (IRR) on the Ewoyaa project has plunged from a once-attractive 105% to just 13.6%, Adam disclosed.“Nobody is going to put their money in that. It should have been 30% to make sense,” he said.In its formal appeal, Atlantic Lithium is seeking several fiscal concessions. These include a reduction in royalty rates from 10% to 5%—in line with what is charged in Ghana’s gold sector—or the adoption of a flexible sliding scale linked to global lithium prices. The company also proposed a review of the 32.5% corporate income tax rate and the removal of import duties on capital equipment.Without these interventions, the project is unlikely to proceed, Adam warned. “Even if we get ratification done, we can’t get it off the ground.”Already, the economic pressure has forced the company to scale back its operations. In October 2024, 25 workers were laid off, and an additional 50 are expected to lose their jobs by May 2025. “We will maintain only a skeletal team,” Adam added.

Atlantic Lithium appeals to government to help save Ghana’s first lithium mine

China has sent back planes it ordered from the US in its latest retaliation over Trump tariffs, the boss of aircraft maker Boeing has said.Kelly Ortberg said two planes had already been returned and another would follow after trade tensions between the two countries escalated.Boeing's chief executive told CNBC that 50 more planes were due to go to China this year but their customers had indicated they will not take delivery of them.The US put 145% tariffs on imports from China and it hit back with a 125% tax on US products.Speaking in the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump said he was optimistic about improving trade relations with China, saying the level of tariffs he had imposed would "come down substantially, but it won't be zero".However, Mr Ortberg said China "have in fact stopped taking delivery of aircraft because of tariff environment".Boeing is America's largest exporter with about 70% of its commercial aircraft sales outside of the US.Mr Ortberg said Boeing was assessing options to re-market 41 of the already built planes to other customers as there was high demand from other airlines.He said there were nine planes not yet in Boeing's production system and he wanted to "understand their intentions and if necessary we can assign to other customers".He added Boeing was "not going continue to build aircraft for customers who will not take them".Later in the afternoon, Mr Ortberg told an investor call "there is not a day that goes by that we're not engaged with either cabinet secretaries or either POTUS himself (President Trump) regarding the trade war between China and the USA."He added he was "very hopeful we'll get to some negotiations".On Wednesday, America's Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told the International Monetary Fund (IMF) conference there was an opportunity for a "big deal" between the US and China on trade.Asked about an upcoming meeting between the countries, Bessent said it would be an "incredible opportunity" to strike an agreement, if China was "serious" on making its economy less dependent on manufacturing exports.Mr Ortberg also told investors others in the Boeing supply chain were now exposed to tariffs - mainly in Japan and Italy where universal tariffs of 10% are being implemented.Brian West, Boeing's chief financial officer said during the call "free trade policy is very important to us" and Boeing will continue to work to with suppliers to ensure continuity.Boeing has reported smaller losses for the first quarter of the year after it manufactured and delivered more planes.Production had slumped in 2024 due to a series of crises and a strike by about 30,000 American factory workers.It wants to increase output of its 737 MAX jets to 38 a month in 2025.

China sends Boeing planes back to US over tariffs

Top executives at well-known US firms are warning about the impact that tariffs are having on their companies and the wider economy.Technology giant Intel, footwear maker Skechers and consumer goods firm Procter &amp; Gamble, have either cut their profit forecasts or withdrawn them citing economic uncertainty.US President Donald Trump has been trying to rebalance relations with key trading partners by using steep tariffs to bring them to the negotiating table.No new trade agreements between the US and other countries have been announced yet but there have been signs of progress in talks with South Korea."The very fluid trade policies in the US and beyond, as well as regulatory risks, have increased the chance of an economic slowdown with the probability of a recession growing," said Intel's chief financial officer, David Zinsner, during a call with investors."We will certainly see costs increase," he added as the California-based firm announced gloomy profit and revenue forecasts.Intel's shares dropped by more than 5% in extended trading after those remarks.Beyond the technology industry, footwear maker Skechers also disappointed investors. The firm's shares fell after it withdrew its annual results forecast."The current environment is simply too dynamic from which to plan results with a reasonable assurance of success," Skechers' chief operating officer, David Weinberg, told investors in a post-earnings call.Skechers - like rivals Nike, Adidas and Puma - uses factories in Asia, particularly in China, to make its products.Comments from Procter &amp; Gamble (P&amp;G) executives also hinted at how tariffs could mean higher prices for its customers.The maker of Ariel, Head &amp; Shoulders and Gillette said it was considering changes to its prices to make up for the extra cost of materials sourced from China and other places. A yam germplasm bank has been launched by the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), in collaboration with the Division of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment and Sustainable Development (DFSNRESD) and the Member of Parliament for Tobago East Ayanna Webster-Roy.The bank was launched at the Goldsborough Demonstration and Training Centre in Goldsborough on March 18 and is the second planting of the Ghanaian yam and aims to improve the agriculture industry and reduce the national food import bill.The initiative introduced five new varieties of yam from Ghana that will serve as a crucial resource for local farmers by providing high-quality planting material, enabling improved productivity within a seven- to eight-month growing period.Speaking at the event, Webster-Roy said her initial thought was about reigniting a sense of pride in the people of Goodwood and in the New Yam Festival.She also spoke of the potential for economic development and improving food security.“It is the start of something beautiful for the people of Tobago and the people of TT. Global coffee traders and roasters have dramatically cut back on purchases as the industry grapples with a sharp increase in prices that retailers are proving reluctant to absorb.The mood was sombre at the U.S. National Coffee Association's annual convention in Houston this week, with attendees expressing shock at a staggering 70% jump in Arabica coffee futures since November.This benchmark price on the ICE exchange dictates coffee deals worldwide, and the sudden surge is sending shockwaves through the supply chain.Renan Chueiri, director general at Ecuadorian instant coffee producer ELCAFE C.A., revealed the unprecedented impact, stating that for the first time, the company has not sold its expected annual production by March."We would usually be sold out by now, but so far we [have] sold less than 30% of production," he explained. "The big price increase eats clients' cash flow; they don't have all the money to buy what they need."The root cause of these price hikes lies in reduced production in key coffee-growing regions, most notably in Brazil, the world's top producer. You check the quality, and if it is ok, you make the payment on the site and drive away with the coffee."While a recent Reuters poll suggests some respite may be on the horizon, predicting a potential 30% drop in Arabica prices by the year's end as high prices dampen demand and early indicators point to a strong Brazilian harvest next year, the immediate future remains bleak for many in the industry.A chief executive of a major roaster in the United States, the world's largest coffee consumer, painted a stark picture."Some people are going down," he admitted, also requesting anonymity. "They don't know if they will be able to sell their product at the new prices."The CEO further explained that supermarkets and grocery stores have been pushing back hard against the higher prices demanded by roasters.Negotiations are protracted, and some retail outlets are already experiencing shortages on their shelves. "It has been a nightmare," he added.The strain is evident further down the supply chain. Ethiopian On Northbourne might look like a brand-new restaurant, but it marks the return of a Canberra icon to the Jolimont building.Dining here is a chance for Canberrans to explore the diversity and incredible flavours of Ethiopian food, served by a family who have become a local institution for their hospitality and food.Elsa Berhane and Girmay Abraha owned and ran Global Cafe for 11 years before closing shop due to the impacts of COVID-19. In the meantime, they’ve been running Flavours of Ethiopia on Allara Street, but when an opportunity came up to open a second venue close to their old location, they jumped at the chance.“Our first business was here; we started here!” Elsa told Region.“Global Cafe was just a small takeaway, but this is bigger, more classy, with a big kitchen, a full bar and our international beer.”Girmay agreed: “We wanted to show more. We have a lot to offer.”Ethiopian On Northbourne has a much larger menu than either of Elsa and Girmay’s previous businesses, allowing them to show off a broader range of Ethiopian foods. They’d mostly showcased wot dishes (stews) served from bain maries but now have Ethiopian salads, samosas, tibs (sauteed meat dishes) and desserts.I visited with my sister to taste the vegetarian beyaynetu, a sharing plate of many different dishes served on injera, a traditional sourdough flatbread. We also ordered the crunchy lentil samosas for our entree, which were served with a very tasty spiced yoghurt.Among the dishes on the platter was shiro, a rich and creamy dish served in a pot.Elsa explained that shiro is a dish made from ground chickpeas, creating a naturally creamy texture. We found the flavour a little smokey and spiced. Other dishes on the platter included duba wot (pumpkin stew) and misir wot (red lentil stew), both cooked with the traditional Ethiopian spice mix berbere, which is beautifully aromatic with just the right amount of heat.I also particularly enjoyed the fasolia side dish of spiced green beans and carrots. At $25 per person, the sharing plate is remarkably good value and very filling, with an extra plate of injera served on the side.Girmay said that they wanted their food to be accessible.“We want to be a local attraction, serving local wine, good coffee and good food at an affordable price … and in a good location!” he said.In addition to table service, the restaurant also serves quick, affordable lunches from a hot box around the corner to cater to the busy public servants in the area. For now, table service at lunchtime is by reservation only, and coffees are only available dine-in, but they’re hoping to expand that in the new year.The couple came to Canberra from Ethiopia in 2002, and Girmay enthusiastically describes himself as ‘a Canberra Ambassador’. He is also a big fan of Canberra region wines, especially Pankhurst Wines which Girmay was delighted to discover has a connection to Ethiopia. Richard Pankhurst (a family member of the winemakers) is a well-known Ethiopian historian and was a professor at the University of Addis Ababa.The service is very friendly (most of the staff are family members), and Elsa said they’ve been pleasantly surprised to have Global Cafe regulars from over four years ago returning to support them and order their favourite dishes again.I’m keen to return and try other dishes on the menu, like the roasted eggplant entree, green lentil azifa salad and asa tibs (sautéed Nile Perch), and Ethiopian coffee gelato, a cup of traditional cinnamon tea, or a cold Ethiopian beer all sound like excellent ways to finish a meal.Ethiopian On Northbourne is located in the Jolimont Building, 65 Northbourne Ave, Canberra. ASAMANKESE, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Ghana's cocoa production is expected to rebound in the 2024/25 crop season, buoyed by favourable weather conditions, according to local farmers, officials from regulatory body Cocobod, and buyers.However, challenges such as illegal gold mining, smuggling, and disease continue to pose risks.In June, the world's second-largest cocoa producer saw its output&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/ghana-cocoa-output-is-half-average-with-harvest-almost-complete-2024-07-16/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">fall below 55% of its average seasonal output</a>, marking a more than two-decade low.Similar problems in neighbouring Ivory Coast, the world's leading cocoa producer, have resulted in a four-year global cocoa market supply deficit, pushing the prices of chocolate's key ingredient to record highs.Ghana now expects output to recover to 650,000 tons in the 2024/25 season, though an official of the International Cocoa Organization said they see it around 500,000 tons.Over 20 cocoa farmers, Cocobod officials, and local buyers told Reuters that farms are showing healthier pods than the previous season due to improved rainfall and sunshine, as well as the timely use of fertilizers and pesticides.Abdul-Majid Mumuni, head of Cocobod's cocoa health and extension division in Ghana’s southeastern region, said, "The crop is amazing; the trees are productive and you can count not less than 50 pods per tree."A secretary of a farmers group in Ghana's southeastern Asamankese district, Ocran Christopher, said they've harvested 500 bags since this season opened in Sept. from their over 72-hecatare farm compared with about 820 bags in the entire 2023/24 season."If things remain like this, we can harvest 2,000-2,500 bags," he said.Cocobod officials said they've seen increased cocoa deliveries this season but are cautious as the season was young.Despite this positive outlook, farmers expressed concern about the potential outbreak of black pod disease and continuing bean smuggling. Ghana lost more than a third of its 2023/24 cocoa output to smuggling, according to Cocobod officials.In response, the regulator has increased the farmgate price by nearly 45% for the current season and replaced the long-standing cocoa loan syndication system with a new funding model, requiring global traders to pay upfront for part of the cocoa bean shipments.Although the new model aims to deter bean trafficking, it received mixed reviews from farmers and buyers. But most people with high blood pressure don't even know they have it – hence why it's often called the "silent killer".Yet there are ways to turn high blood pressure around: exercise being the focus of this study.Over 5,100 adults were recruited to the study, which tracked their health over three decades with physical assessments and questionnaires about their exercise habits, smoking status, and alcohol intake.At each clinical assessment, blood pressure was measured three times, a minute apart, and for the data analysis, participants were grouped into four categories, by race and gender.Across the board – amongst men, women, and in both racial groups – levels of physical activity slumped from 18 to 40 years of age, with rates of hypertension rising and physical activity falling over subsequent decades.According to the researchers, this suggests that young adulthood is an important window for intervening to prevent midlife hypertension with health promotion programs designed to boost exercise."Nearly half of our participants in young adulthood had suboptimal levels of physical activity, which was significantly associated with the onset of hypertension, indicating that we need to raise the minimum standard for physical activity," said lead author Jason Nagata, a UCSF expert in young adult medicine.When the researchers looked at the people who had done five hours of moderate exercise a week during early adulthood – double the minimum amount currently recommended for adults – they found this level of activity lowered the risk of hypertension considerably, and especially if people maintained their exercise habits until age 60."Achieving at least twice the current minimum adult [physical activity] guidelines may be more beneficial for the prevention of hypertension than simply meeting the minimum guidelines," the researchers wrote in their paper.But it's not easy to step up weekly physical activity amidst life-changing decisions and growing responsibilities."This might be especially the case after high school when opportunities for physical activity diminish as young adults transition to college, the workforce, and parenthood, and leisure time is eroded," said Nagata.As for another sobering truth, the study also showed how Black men and Black women experience starkly different health trajectories compared to their White counterparts. At 40 years of age, physical activity levels plateaued among White men and women, whereas activity levels in Black participants continued to decline.By 45 years, Black women surpassed White men in rates of hypertension, while White women in the study experienced the lowest rates of hypertension through midlife.And by age 60, between 80 to 90 percent of Black men and women had hypertension, compared with just below 70 percent for White men and around half of White women.The research team put these well-known racial disparities down to a multitude of social and economic factors; not that these factors were assessed in this study, although high school education was noted."Although Black male youth may have high engagement in sports, socioeconomic factors, neighborhood environments, and work or family responsibilities may prevent continued engagement in physical activity through adulthood," Nagata said.The study was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.An earlier version of this article was published in April 2021.

Taymor "Tay-K" McIntyre was sentenced to 80 years in prison shortly after a jury in Texas found him guilty of murdering photographer Mark Anthony Saldivar in 2017.The 24-year-old rapper appeared in front of District Court Judge Stephanie Boyd on Tuesday, April 15, and learned his fate following his second murder trial. Tay-K was convicted of a lesser charge of murder on Monday after he was acquitted of capital murder, which would've resulted in a life sentence with no parole. His 80-year sentence will run concurrent to his previous sentence of 55 years, which stems from his 2019 murder conviction. A jury found him guilty of murdering Ethan Walker in 2016.Tay-K's legal troubles started in 2016 after he was arrested on murder and robbery charges following a home invasion in Mansfield, Texas. He was only 16 when he fired the deadly bullets that killed Walker and injured another man. He was placed on house arrest while he awaited trial, but escaped in March 2017 after he cut off his ankle monitor.While he was on the run, Tay-K made an attempt to rob Mark Anthony Saldivar's photography equipment while they were at a Chik-Fil-A in San Antonio. He tried to lure Saldivar into a black SUV, but the victim escaped and tried to call for help. Tay-K tried to hit Saldivar with his car but he jumped on top of the hood instead. That's when Tay-K shot him once and killed him.Tay-K recorded his hit song "The Race" and released it shortly before he was captured by New Jersey police in June 2017. The song blew up and was later included on his debut album Santana World. In 2019, a jury convicted the rapper of murder and aggravated robbery. "The Race" was used as evidence during the sentencing portion of his trial. He was sentenced to 55 years for murder, 30 years for one count of aggravated robbery, and 13 years each for the other two counts of aggravated robbery. The Fulani people are Africa’s largest pastoralist group. There are between 25 million and 40 million Fulani people across 17 African countries, from the Atlantic shores of Senegal and Mauritania to Sudan.The Fulani have long intrigued social anthropologists with their complex cultural heritage. They raise mainly cattle, goats and sheep in the vast, arid Sahel region. Some are nomadic but many have adopted a sedentary lifestyle. In the wide geographical belt where they live, they speak 11 dialects.The Fulani’s origins and migratory patterns have been subjects of scientific debates. Certain physical characteristics are similar to those commonly observed in European populations. These, combined with specific cultural practices like scarification, have given the impression that their ancestors came to west Africa from elsewhere.One way to find out more about a population’s history is by studying their genes. This also informs medical research.African populations remain underrepresented in genomic studies. Only about 1.1% of genomic data being used for studies of the links between genes and diseases has come from people of African descent. This means they may miss out on the potential benefits of genomic research, like early detection of disease and drugs designed for specific biological targets.Commonly available genomic datasets also lack comprehensive Fulani DNA samples covering the entire region they inhabit.To address this gap, we conducted over a decade of field research among Fulani nomads throughout the Sahel/savannah belt.We are an international team of researchers specialising in human diversity and evolution. Our research explores human migration, adaptation and cultural and genetic diversity. We wanted to uncover the genetic and evolutionary histories of the Fulani.Our work has revealed that all Fulani groups share a common genetic background. This has been shaped by centuries of migration and interaction with diverse African populations. Their ancestry includes influences from both north and west African populations.Our findingsGiven the Fulani’s primarily nomadic lifestyle and geographically dispersed campsites, our researchers often travelled to remote locations. Fieldworkers worked with Fulani interpreters and linguists to explain the research’s purpose to the communities.We secured biological samples and anthropological data for over 400 participants from Fulani populations in seven countries: Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Cameroon and Chad.Genomic analyses confirm a distinct Fulani genetic signature. This reflects deep ancestral connections to both north and west Africa. Traces of ancient north African ancestry, including influences from ancient Iberomaurusians (Later Stone Age hunter-gatherers), are present across all Fulani populations. This shows populations moved between the Sahel and the Maghreb region during the Green Sahara period 11,000 to 5,000 years ago.Our findings also indicate closer Fulani genetic ties to west African communities. Eastern Fulani populations share genetic affinities with central and eastern African groups.This pattern aligns with historical records of Fulani migrations. It also underscores the role of continuous gene flow across the Sahel in shaping their genetic diversity. Such genetic exchange may have contributed to the Fulani’s resilience as pastoralists, enabling them to adapt to a variety of ecological and climatic conditions.Our findings went beyond ancestry. We found that the Fulani have genetic adaptations relevant to their environment and way of life. One example is the high prevalence of a genetic trait that enables a person to digest milk beyond childhood into adulthood. It’s often associated with European and north African populations, which suggests that genes once flowed from these regions. It must have been essential for sustaining the Fulani’s dairy-based pastoralist economy.Another striking discovery is the Fulani’s lower susceptibility to the parasite responsible for severe malaria. There is a high incidence of malaria in the Sahel belt.Cultural and historical significanceThe genetic study of the Fulani tells us more about their biological history as a population and enriches our understanding of their cultural and historical stories.The population mixing and migration reflected in their DNA corresponds with oral traditions and historical accounts of the Fulani’s movements across Africa. Some historians and linguists have reported Fulani past migrations from Senegal via Guinea to Mali and then via Nigeria and Niger to Lake Chad and even further.Their complex genetic diversity from different sources mirrors their ability to assimilate diverse cultural elements. It suggests a history of surviving challenging environments and health threats.The Fulani’s genetic adaptations, such as the ability to digest milk and resist malaria, have had profound impacts on their societal structures and health outcomes. These traits have enabled them to thrive in varied environments.

When Nanannan Mensah arrived in Northern Ireland from Ghana to accept as a job as a nurse, she didn't know anyone in the city she had moved to.Three years on, Ms Mensah, who lives in Londonderry with her family, said that while navigating life here had not been without its challenges, she had been able to find support from fellow Ghanaians who also made the move.Ghanaian Community NI (GCNI) is a newly-established group that has been set up to connect and support Northern Ireland's growing west African community.GCNI held its first official event in Derry on Saturday to celebrate Ghana's 68th Independence Day.Formerly known as the Gold Coast, Ghana gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1957.For Ms Mensah, seeing Ghanaians based in Northern Ireland come together was a "dream come true"."We haven't had an official group before now in the North West, so it's really exciting to come together to celebrate our culture, heritage, who we are and what we stand for," she told BBC Radio Foyle's North West Today programme."You do need a lot of support when you come to a different country and with the group, you can call people who may have been through similar experiences and for me, that's really reassuring."Challenges in NIMs Mensah said she had encountered challenges in Northern Ireland especially around finding accommodation."That was a big issue, it took a long time to find somewhere and then you have to find someone credible to guarantee it for you, and when you don't know anyone in the beginning, that is really hard," she said."For some of our children as well, they can experience bullying, and you have to learn to navigate the education system."But I feel we are moving away from that, and I see my family's future in Northern Ireland."Theodora Essuman a nurse who lives in Omagh, came to Northern Ireland four years ago and first lived in Derry before moving to County Tyrone."I fell in love with Omagh. Israel's military has admitted killing a UN worker with tank fire in an incident in the Gaza Strip last month, having previously denied responsibility.After Marin Valev Marinov, a Bulgarian employee of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), was killed when a UN compound in Deir al-Balah was damaged on 19 March, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had not struck the site.But the IDF said on Thursday that the initial findings of its investigation indicated its troops had in fact killed Marinov after wrongly identifying the building as containing an "enemy presence"."The building was struck due to assessed enemy presence and was not identified by the forces as a UN facility," it added.These preliminary findings have been shared with the UN and the full conclusion will also be provided, it said.It added: "The IDF regrets this serious incident and continues to conduct thorough review processes to draw operational lessons and evaluate additional measures to prevent such events in the future."We express our deep sorrow for the loss and send our condolences to the family."Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev said in a statement: "The Israeli side has apologised to Bulgaria."He added: "Along with this, we will insist on fair compensation for Captain Marinov's relatives. The international court of justice will rule in the next few weeks on whether the United Arab Emirates can be plausibly found “complicit in the commission of genocide” by arming the Rapid Support Forces militia in Sudan’s civil war.The case was brought by Sudan, whose acting justice minister, Muawia Osman, told the world court in The Hague last week that the country’s “ongoing genocide would not be possible without the complicity of the UAE, including the shipment of arms to the RSF”. Sudan wants ICJ judges to force the UAE to stop its alleged support for the RSF and make “full reparations”, including compensation to victims of the war.Responding for the UAE, Reem Ketait, a top foreign ministry official, told the court: “The idea that the UAE is somehow the driver of this reprehensible conflict in Sudan could not be further from the truth. This case is the most recent iteration of the applicant’s misuse of our international institutions as a stage from which to attack the UAE.” Sudan’s allegations were “at best misleading and at worst pure fabrications”, she said.The case could turn on a “reservation” that the UAE entered when it signed up to the genocide convention in 2005, to the effect that it would not allow a dispute concerning its compliance with the convention to be settled by the ICJ. The UAE says the reservation precludes the ICJ from even forming a preliminary view as to whether the UAE is complicit in acts of genocide.It would be a severe blow to the UAE, which places great store by its international reputation, if the ICJ did anything but strike the claim from the list. But at a minimum the case’s existence may serve to put further pressure on all the external partners accused of backing the warring factions to think more carefully about the support they provide.Sudan descended into a deadly conflict in mid-April 2023 when long-simmering tensions between the military and the RSF broke out in the capital, Khartoum, and spread to other regions. Both sides have been accused of abuses in the course of the war.The UK and other western countries have limited power to stop the fighting. More influence rests with regional powers such as Egypt, which has longstanding ties to the Sudanese army, and the UAE, which has long been accused of arming the RSF – allegations it denies.On Tuesday a British-led attempt to establish a contact group to facilitate a ceasefire fell apart when Arab states refused to sign a joint communique after a conference in London.Analysts say UAE’s interest in Sudan stems from overlapping desires to gain political influence there at the expense of Saudi Arabia, exploit its natural resources, and prevent the spread of political Islam, which UAE sees as a threat to its security.As with many claims for measures to prevent a plausible genocide, the case, which relates specifically to the RSF’s treatment of the Masalit people in Darfur, is being heard at speed. The Sudanese government only filed its application on 5 March.Prof Eirik Bjorge, a law professor representing Sudan, told the court: “There can be no doubt that the Masalit people is currently being subjected to genocide, and that there is serious evidence that the UAE is failing to prevent this and is complicit.”Bjorge quoted a panel of UN experts who in January 2024 assessed as “credible” allegations that cargo planes coming from the UAE to an airport in eastern Chad were transporting weapons to the RSF. He also referenced Sudanese intelligence assessments that a field hospital built by the UAE next to the airport in September 2024 was “the primary supply and support hub for the enemy [RSF]” and that Chadian flights transporting military aid were continuing as of March of this year.Sudan’s lawyers pointed out in court that the Biden administration had announced in January that seven RSF-owned companies in the UAE had been targeted for sanctions, at the same time as the US declared that RSF rebels had committed genocide.The UAE told the ICJ that none of the seven entities held an active business licence in the UAE, “nor are they currently operating in the UAE”.Sudan also cited research by Yale Humanitarian Research Lab that identified and located four heavy artillery pieces consistent with a type of Chinese-produced 155mm howitzer artillery gun, which it considered were engaged in the 12-day bombardment of Zamzam camp in December last year. The Yale lab said the UAE was “the only country” known to have bought this type of howitzer.The UAE’s ambassador to the Netherlands, Ameirah AlHefeiti, told the court the UAE had not provided arms to either of the warring parties. Ketait said the UAE regarded the war as an entirely avoidable factional struggle and accused the Sudanese government of avoiding all UAE-backed efforts at mediation.Alison Macdonald KC, for the UAE, said the evidence produced of UAE supply of arms was thin, recycled or entirely self-serving. She added that the next UN panel of experts report, due to be published soon, would provide “absolutely no support for the applicant’s claims” – an assertion that is likely to turn on whether the panel of experts was able to establish the content of cargo shipped from the UAE to Chad.

The assailants fired warning shots, causing several crew members to flee and hide within the vessel in what turned into a three-hour ordeal.According to surviving crew members, the armed attackers ordered everyone on deck, seized their mobile phones, and remained aboard for hours before eventually leaving the vessel. Once the attackers had departed, the crew emerged from hiding only to discover that three key officers were missing.Due to lack of network coverage at sea, the crew had to sail closer to the coast before they could report the incident to authorities.Speaking to the media, the Director of Naval Operations, Captain (GN) Ebenezer Kwame Yirenkyi confirmed that, as of now, no tangible leads have been established regarding the whereabouts of the kidnapped seamen or the identity of the attackers.“Our investigation teams are actively working to trace the kidnappers. Berlin has updated its travel advice for the United States to stress that holding a US visa or entry waiver does not guarantee entry for German citizens.The change comes after three German nationals were detained while trying to enter the US.A spokesman for the Foreign Office said the ministry was taking these incidents seriously.The ministry changed its advisory on Tuesday. It now includes a reminder that approval through the US ESTA system or holding a US visa does not automatically allow entry in every case."The final decision on whether a person can enter the US lies with the US border authorities," the spokesperson said Wednesday, noting that the same was true for German authorities.He added that the change did not amount to a travel warning.What happened to the Germans detained in the US?In one of the cases, a German man with a green card residency permit was detained at Boston airport last week after returning from Luxembourg. Service Canada is offering a new guarantee for travellers looking to get their papers in order: Your passport will be renewed in six weeks, or it’s free.Announced Friday by Citizens' Services Minister Terry Beech, the guarantee comes as the department seeks to cut down on wait times for services including passports, federal benefits and the social insurance number (SIN) program.“We are modernizing service delivery and improving the passport program to reduce wait times and costs while ensuring Canadians can access the support they need without unnecessary barriers,” said Parliamentary Secretary Stéphane Lauzon in a Friday release.The streamlining comes in the wake of the post-pandemic recovery, when a surge in passport renewals led to wait times dragging on for weeks, causing widespread frustration and fear among would-be travellers with plane tickets in hand.“Despite months of planning, passport offices couldn’t handle the surge in demand,” reads a newly released report from Service Canada, citing a near-quadrupling of incoming phone calls from Canadians between 2021 and 2022.In the 2021-22 year, Service Canada issued 1.3 million passports, less than half of the three million counted in 2018-19.Since then, the department says it has ramped up resources to streamline the process, including automated information systems to answer questions from applicants, online passport renewals for eligible Canadians and expanded capacity at in-person locations.The current standard wait time for passport applications is 20 business days, or four weeks, with some locations offering an expedited turnaround of two weeks.Service Canada’s new guarantee gives itself an extra two weeks of leeway on top of the standard wait time, which remains at 20 business days, but the department notes that regardless of how their renewal is filed, applicants “will receive a full refund of their passport fees” if their documents fail to be processed in time.Beyond passports, Beech says his department is working to accelerate services across the federal bureaucracy, from benefits claims like those through employment insurance (EI), old age security and the Canada Pension Plan, to issuing social insurance numbers.“With new digital options including online passport renewals, SIN online and digital credentials, Canadians can expect to spend less time in line or waiting on hold,” Beech said in the release.A majority of EI claims are now either fully or partially automated, the Service Canada report published Friday reads, and newer programs such as the Canada Dental Care Plan have launched with automated application systems.The Service Canada report highlights new options that don’t require an in-person visit, cutting down on the time and inconvenience for services that can be handled online, and also shortening in-person lineups.Key among those efforts is the process behind issuing new SINs, which since 2020 has been available to newcomers and young Canadians online, and in the near future, the department expects to expand its SIN@Landing program, which allows arriving newcomers to apply and receive their number before leaving the airport.The report says bundling SIN applications with other immigration paperwork, planned as part of the forthcoming SIN@Entry program, “could reduce in-person visits to Service Canada Centres by as much as 50 per cent.”
